DICE addresses fan complaints by completely revamping progression.

Star Wars Battlefront II is a gorgeous game that addresses many of the fan requests after the previous Battlefront, such as bringing together characters from multiple Star Wars eras. But its progression system was deeply flawed, even with the last-minute removal of microtransactions just before its launch.

A newly released update completely rethinks how Battlefront II progression works, and we took a look at it in our latest livestream, a replay of which you can watch above. We recap what was so troubling about how the game originally worked and then explore the way things work now.

Now Playing: Revisiting Battlefront 2: New Progression Update

Among other things, all heroes and hero ships have been unlocked for all players. Crates (the game's loot boxes) are now home only to credits and cosmetic items, rather than anything that affect gameplay--things like Star Cards and weapons are now unlocked through gameplay. However, anything you unlocked previously is still available to you, regardless of how you obtained it.

Microtransactions are still not in place, although this update paves the way for their return. In April, you'll be able to use real-world money to purchase Crystals, which can then be spent to purchase cosmetic skins (which don't impact gameplay in any way). These skins will also be obtainable with credits.

Beyond the changes to progression, the new update makes a variety of balance changes and other tweaks, which you can read about in the patch notes. The update is out now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
