Variety reports that The Force Awakens made $40.1 million domestically on Monday, December 21. That obliterates the previous record-holder, 2004's Spider-Man 2, which made $27.2 million on the Monday after the Fourth of July holiday over a decade ago.

The Hollywood news site goes on to say the fact that many schools in the US are off this week probably bolstered the movie's performance even further. The Force Awakens has now made $288.1 million in North America, bringing its worldwide haul to $610.8 million.

The production budget for The Force Awakens is estimated to be in the area of $200 million.
