Star Trek Online's PS4 and Xbox One Version Passes 1 Million Players

Free-to-play MMO reaches new heights on consoles.

Star Trek Online's console version launched in September and it's been a big hit, apparently. Developer Cryptic Studios has announced that the game has reached 1.1 million players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

In an infographic, the developer also revealed that 59 percent of people are playing as Command officers, with 22 percent playing as Engineers, and 19 percent as Science officers (via XboxAchievements). Starfleet was far and away the most popular faction, with 68 percent of players (752,000) siding with them; 20 percent (220,000) signed up with the Klingon faction, while 12 percent (132,000) went with Romulan.

The most-used ships on PS4 were the Negh'Var Heavy Battlecruiser, the Malem Light Warbird, and the Tactical Escort. On Xbox One, the most popular ships were the Negh'Var Heavy Battlecruiser, the Scimitar Dreadnaught, and the Eclipse Intel Cruiser.

Check out the complete infographic here.

The free-to-play Star Trek Online, which originally launched in 2010 for PC, has more than 130 story missions and features classic Star Trek actors such as Jeri Ryan, Michael Dorn, and Tim Russ. Its first two expansions and major updates are available on the console versions as well.

it's not perfect but it's pretty fun, especially the space battle. the ground combat is a little weak and boring but considering all it gets right and how authentic it is to the Star trek licence, it's pretty good. and it's free/... i wouldn't say it's good enough to pay a monthly fee, but for free? it's pretty good

Published by one of the worst companies ever. I'd be willing to go so far as to say that Perfect World is worse than EA or Ubisoft.

those new romulus mission were uninspired, the dyson sphere missions helped bump up new weapons shields etc and the voyager missions and the delta quadrant parts are the best - and the throw backs to the tv shows are stand out - you fight next to the enterprise ncc 1701 - you use the enterprise c - and like i already pointed out - voyager :D - some cameos you wouldnt have expected

its not a bad game but does need some improvements- like the lock on aim for some reason locks onto my characters instead of the bad guy in front of me - better personal shields they go down to quick - and a better tutorial in general

oh one note as a free to play game yes expect to replay some missions to further progress and is abit of grind - and if you level up the missions you replay will have level up with you eg if you played at min lvl 16 the next replay will be the same rank you are making it bit harder......

and many people i know that started played the first few missions and havnt gone back since im glad i worked it out and kept going but i do have a few star trek games in general so im a fan

just wish there was a another voyager elite force, and i forget the name but there was a mirror star trek game on the ps2 i played the sh- out of back in day

Most people aren't noticing this, but the fact that 1.1 mil captains/players only have 2.7 mil bridge officers if VERY bad. Why? That is less than 3 bridge officers per player, and you get your 3rd bridge officer with the first HOUR of playing. That means the majority of those 1.1 mil aren't even playing the game for an hour before deciding not to come back.

@Flyin3lvl: the general theme of each faction is Starfleet is seeking to keep peace and stability, Romulans are refugees looking for a new home and allies after Romulus & Remus were destroyed, and the klingons are on a warpath yet how it plays out is kinda political some want a good fight and glory and some are up for the good fight and glory but not a needless war....and you do get to do some very klingon stuff......i'll leave it at that lol

what's fun is playing the part no matter what side you pick....like there's some points where you really get to play up the heroism of the federation or the tactical political side of Romulans or the aggressive warlike klingon

@darthrevenx: ""and you do get to do some very klingon stuff"" im intrigued - i thought missions would be the same just with a different character and ship , and when done with starfleet was gonna move on

done all main episodes- the Dyson sphere and currently running through delta quadrant i guess in few months i will start replaying when completely run out the star fleet side of things

I played it for like half an hour, but I had this weird glitch where my character would never stop moving even when I wasn't touching the controller and I also had a hard time accessing doors and crates and lockers, so I gave up.

@chasereese: it does that as you didnt say which console your on mine is ps4 - and yes you get to a console and my character continues to wonder to the side but thats not a deal breaker , just move back and if it dont show the prompt to use it - put the curser over the object hold x and prompt from that quick menu

It's a decent game. I played it for awhile on the Xbox but kinda got bored... I couldn't grasp the spaceship battles since it seemed like all I did was constantly get lost. But it's a fun game.

@wookietim: yellow circle - this is the area you need to be in - green circle this is the objective - sometimes within the circle will be an arrow pointing up or down and reduces in height when get closer to the area - if you have main mission on the go the arrows will be yellow if replaying a mission with the current mission active the arrows are white

@Flyin3lvl: Yeah but for some reason I always end up going in the exact wrong direction at full speed.

I'll probably pick it up again soon enough but it's one of those "After Overwatch and after these other games are out of my system" things.

@wookietim: up and down on the d pad controls the ship speed - i find it way to hard to make a turn at full speed, across all ships when progressing just drop the speed to two , in some ship battles i personally drop the speed so the bad guy pulls out in front and i get a few shots in from behind but controlling the speed is also a factor when in battles

@Flyin3lvl: "but controlling the speed is also a factor when in battles" Indeed well said and same advise from me. I love to keep Impulse spd at 30-50% at Ship fights. Makes it more comfy and feel more realistic :) Been in Star Trek Online since launch <3 Wish u nice gaming in whatever game that is :)

@BlackBaldwin: Neverwinter? Yeah, that game is basically the filler content from a Diablo game, at the center of a Russian nesting doll rep grind system. I wish 4e had gotten better video games. : \

They are really celebrating the class and faction imbalance. I hope new MMOs do away with factions, like FF 14.
