Star Citizen Will Let You Buy Land For Up To $100 Per Parcel

The incredibly ambitious PC space game adds another microtransaction option.

Star Citizen is the most successful crowdfunded project of any kind in history, and now developer Cloud Imperium Games has rolled out another way for the super-ambitious PC space game to make more money before launch. The developer today started allowing players to start the process of buying parcels of virtual land. For $50, you can get a single 4km x 4km parcel of land that you can use as you see fit in the game. You also get what Cloud Imperium is calling a "Geotack marking beacon," which lets you know the exact coordinates of your land. This beacon also informs you in real time of weather and has motion-detection to inform you if someone is using your property without permission (more on that later).

For $100, you can get an 8km x 8km parcel of land with the same Geotack beacon. On its website, Cloud Imperium said when Star Citizen launches you'll be able to buy parcels of land with in-game credits or through normal gameplay progression. The studio is offering the land for real money now to support the ongoing development of Star Citizen.

In a detailed FAQ explaining the new land-buying system, Cloud Imperium said players who purchase land won't have an advantage over those who do not. But what about players claiming the "best" plots of land? Cloud Imperium pointed out that there are "billions of square kilometres" available in the game, so there is no telling for sure what will be the "best" place to hunker down. Some players might want to buy land based on the natural resources it has, while others might want to be close to trade routes. Others might simply want a place with a nice view.

"This--combined with the fact that there's an enormous amount of real estate available--means that prospecting and the purchase of land are two pieces of a supply-and-demand equation governing how rapidly land of a distinct perceived value will come on the market," Cloud Imperium said.

When you're scouting for a parcel of land, you will have to consider factors like the ones mentioned above, along with the grade of the terrain, as this can affect your ability to establish an outpost. Players can destroy others' beacons, but this is a criminal offence in the game, so it's a risk. Beacons can be replaced, but it's unclear if this is a free service. Additionally, you can mine another players' land for resources, but again, this is a crime and the in-game authorities could come after you. Players concerned about security can implement defence drone, hire mercenaries, or even pay for a defence contract.

Another very important note is that, for now, all your $50 or $100 gets you is a "claim license" for the land. No one can claim land before the feature actually goes live, and there is no word yet as to when that may happen. For now, your money is going towards the ongoing development of Star Citizen

For lots and lots more on Star Citizen's new land-buying system, check out this in-depth FAQ. Star Citizen has brought in an astonishing $168 million in crowdfunding, and that figure only stands to climb higher and higher still.

People are not paying for a game, they are paying for a subscription to a soap opera entitled "Mo Money Mo Space".

@sursc: Exactly GTA 5 took 5 years to develop and had a massive budget and 1,000 devs working on it from the word go. Anthem has been in development since mass effect 3 came out and isn't due out until next dec. AAA games take time its just we knew about this one if a publisher had picked this game up all we would know about it is maybe an E3 trailer this year and that would be it.

There is nothing micro about a transaction that runs from just short of AAA Title to a collectors edition, just for an add on.

I think chris might pull off the greatest scam in gaming history, I am sure some sheeps will come to his defense since they dont want to admit that they waste their money, lets be logical everytime chris comes up with a new feature to add to the game and a new way for the gaming sheeps to give him money, 5 years from now it will be the same thing we need more time to make the universe bigger can you buy some planets to back us please.

@hardcoregamer1: It's not really a new feature it was always meant to be in the game. Most haters I've found are just EVE and ED fanboys who know their games are going to die when this fully launches and they're mad about it so they spread miss information where ever they can in attempt to slow its production. Chris has made several games in the past made movies has A list actors for the single player game and now has partnered with INTEL. So unless he scammed INTEL to give out 150 $400 hard drives to the crowed at citizen con and pay for the event space I think INTEL has seen what they're doing and wants to back a winner

@hardcoregamer1: It's not really a scam if he's actually trying to make the thing he's taking money for. And I think he is.

Now, he may be biting off more than he can chew with Star Citizen (and it wouldn't be the first time), but that would just make backing the project a bad investment. And everybody knows (or should know) the risks of crowd funding before they kick in.

Wheres all the microtransaction backlash against this game? This is another example of gamers being hypocritical to me.

@Mogan: i think he meant in the mainstream media. this game should be flamed on all major news sites is what he was insinuating -- i think. and deservingly so. chris roberts is a coward; too afraid to commit to the project with his own investment and would rather put all the financial risk on the fans. if the game fails and burns, it is not a big deal since chris himself didn't spend a dime from his own pocket. and why would he? you would have to be mad to have faith in this fiasco of a project.

@naz99: I may sound like a conspiracy theorist here, but can we really put it past companies to make grinding fair? I mean whats to stop them making the time spent to get enough money or resources in game fair or "decent" I am sure companies actually make it as slow as they possibly can to accumulate the needed resources for in game stuff purposefully so they can exploit the players, frustrate you long enough and you may just spend the money...I don't think this is a knew notion and I can only hope that these companies have a good moral compass but from this news and from spending so much on ships etc, I really think that these guys are all about the money.

Sure its business but we gamers are in the business of having fun, it wont be fun if its all a grind and we can't enjoy the game as those who just spend the money for what we work hard for.

@N0madS0uL: They already have you can only have 250k credits before game launch you can't buy anymore than that. It's limited to $20 a day or week(can't remember) to buy in game credits but it's capped. Once game launches you won't be able to buy ships only 20k in game credits how ever often they have it. All ships that are insured once blown up you gotta wait for the claim to be filed and must wait to get your ship back. They don't answer to a publisher I'm sure battlefront 2 and destiny would of been amazing if they didn't have to answer to a publisher.

I mean, this really isn't a scam. Not a good one anyway. CI is actually making something, and we can see it if we go looking. They've been paying a few hundred developers for a couple years now, as well as voice and elaborate mo-cap sessions with a handful of pretty big name actors. So it seems like all this money is being spent and Chris isn't just pocketing the 168 million. I don't know that all this money is being spent wisely, and I doubt what eventually comes out as a 1.0 will ever live up to the ridiculous expectations the crowd funding campaign has established, but I don't have any reason to think Cloud Imperium isn't at least trying to make the game they're saying Star Citizen will be.

When i backed this game 3-4(?) years ago all i wanted the purported spiritual successor to Wing Commander. I have no idea what this game is gonna be, seems like its supposed to be X/EVE/ELITE/FPS all in one. If it works YAY but now with all these massive-transactions disguised as "backing options" its getting ridicules. Well whatever the money has been long been "invested" so all i an do is wait and hope at least the SP module makes it out i don't care about the MMO part.

@ghost140: I'm hoping SQ42 will be out in 2018 the whole game was in grey box last year and most devs are dedicated to it's completion and not on the MMO aspect. And every transaction is for backing development.

Some of you need to realize that this is not a game yet, it is a crowdfunded project. This is not a microtransaction, but another backing option. You cant do anything with the land claim Beacon right now. When the mechanic to claim land actually becomes available, everyone will be able to buy these claims with in-game currency, as stated in Star citizens Q&A about the subject.

It is understandable that some games take up to a certain amount of years to finish but this game has no release date, it makes people skeptical because no matter how much work went into this game, people want to see the fruits of it. Any money poured into this project is an investment and it is an gamble because who knows if one day the game is suspended and then cancelled and all that invested thier money into this project lost thier money also the project can be released and it turns out to be one big turd like Duke Nukem. What kind of machine would one need to run this game when it is finished? Low ends may be screwed and I would have taken that money invested and put it into a better system. However, those that invested hope you get what you want. :)

@ccgod: George Lucas isn't greedy like King though. I believe George even donated the money he got from disney, it was really just about finding a suitable company to continue his star wars legacy.

I backed this game from the start, but since then the game has been more about microtransactions than anything else, $150 for a ship, now $100 for artificial land in a game...I backed it in good faith because I loved the genre and wanted these kinds of games to come back (space flight sim) now that Chris Roberts and his band discovered they can coin on ships, land and what not they will milk us dry for it.

You may be able to grind for it in game but lets call it as it is and thats capitalising and not much else. Disgusts me...looks like another EA clone in the making...

Starting to lose faith in this game. 3.0 was supposed to be out for everyone about a year ago (if I remember correctly). A years delay... For a single patch. That doesn't exactly bode well for the rest of the game. I know it's out now for the "Evocati", but there's no telling when the riff raff (the rest of us) will get to play it. I almost regret spending $300 of my hard earned cash on ships, contributing to the fueling of what may look like the most elaborate scam in gaming history.

Course, I might be wrong, and I hope I am. Time will tell.

@vegard1985: Well if you really knew anything about the game you'd know it wasn't a scam. They always miss their dates on all patch announcements like this it's nothing new most come out 6months later which it has. Part of 3.0 is out to a lot of people I've played and it's pretty good it runs extremely choppy for me but I have an older PC and the game isn't optimized at all so is to be expected. There's plenty of footage of in game 3.0 looking and running just fine. They partnered with Intel which can only help them. And I doubt Intel would ruin their reputation by backing a known scam.

@ccgod: I didn't just throw 300 dollars at a game arbitrarily. I probably know more about the game than the average SC player, because at one point I really believed in the project. At this point though it is hard to believe in it, for me.

The game runs like ass on my rig too, with an i7 4790K and a GTX 1080. Doubt anyone can run it well in its current state.

Anyway, like I said; hope I'm wrong. I'm not alone in thinking like this though.

You might not be describing a scam, but you're sure not describing a project worth having a lot of faith in.
