Star Citizen Will Let You Buy Land For Up To $100 Per Parcel

The incredibly ambitious PC space game adds another microtransaction option.

Star Citizen is the most successful crowdfunded project of any kind in history, and now developer Cloud Imperium Games has rolled out another way for the super-ambitious PC space game to make more money before launch. The developer today started allowing players to start the process of buying parcels of virtual land. For $50, you can get a single 4km x 4km parcel of land that you can use as you see fit in the game. You also get what Cloud Imperium is calling a "Geotack marking beacon," which lets you know the exact coordinates of your land. This beacon also informs you in real time of weather and has motion-detection to inform you if someone is using your property without permission (more on that later).

For $100, you can get an 8km x 8km parcel of land with the same Geotack beacon. On its website, Cloud Imperium said when Star Citizen launches you'll be able to buy parcels of land with in-game credits or through normal gameplay progression. The studio is offering the land for real money now to support the ongoing development of Star Citizen.

In a detailed FAQ explaining the new land-buying system, Cloud Imperium said players who purchase land won't have an advantage over those who do not. But what about players claiming the "best" plots of land? Cloud Imperium pointed out that there are "billions of square kilometres" available in the game, so there is no telling for sure what will be the "best" place to hunker down. Some players might want to buy land based on the natural resources it has, while others might want to be close to trade routes. Others might simply want a place with a nice view.

"This--combined with the fact that there's an enormous amount of real estate available--means that prospecting and the purchase of land are two pieces of a supply-and-demand equation governing how rapidly land of a distinct perceived value will come on the market," Cloud Imperium said.

When you're scouting for a parcel of land, you will have to consider factors like the ones mentioned above, along with the grade of the terrain, as this can affect your ability to establish an outpost. Players can destroy others' beacons, but this is a criminal offence in the game, so it's a risk. Beacons can be replaced, but it's unclear if this is a free service. Additionally, you can mine another players' land for resources, but again, this is a crime and the in-game authorities could come after you. Players concerned about security can implement defence drone, hire mercenaries, or even pay for a defence contract.

Another very important note is that, for now, all your $50 or $100 gets you is a "claim license" for the land. No one can claim land before the feature actually goes live, and there is no word yet as to when that may happen. For now, your money is going towards the ongoing development of Star Citizen

For lots and lots more on Star Citizen's new land-buying system, check out this in-depth FAQ. Star Citizen has brought in an astonishing $168 million in crowdfunding, and that figure only stands to climb higher and higher still.

Will they let you buy a release date for the game? No? Just take your money again?

Meaning $100 millions are gone and they have no money to finish the game. Who would've guessed - buy less Lambo's next time.

Star citizen is the most successful crowdfunded scam of any kind in history. You should lead with that.

Does this game even know what it wants to be anymore? So many new additions without any real releases. Enough already. Just finish something. How long can you drag this out? It's been six years. This was supposed to be out in 2014 with Squadron 42 in 2015. I see they have now removed the 2017 tag from the S42 part of the website with SC still in Alpha. Maybe the Holiday stream will have something good for people, like a solid release date for S42? But don't hold your breath.

@darkelf83: i blame the brain dead idiots who keep throwing their money at it. obviously, the false hype is doing wonders and chris roberts has no reason in the world to actually FINISH the game if he keeps getting free revenue. he might as well keep the game in a stage of development forever and continue exploiting people for more revenue at the same time -- essentially, there is no risk or upfront cost for chris using this model. mark my words; this game will crash and burn harder than any other game in history when people start to clue in that the quality and value after all these years just isn't there and they finally realize they have been had.

"For now, your money is going towards the ongoing development of Star Citizen..."

So are they running short on their $168 million? Down to their last dollars and cents? I don't know, but maybe they should just stop adding even more features and just finish a complete game. Then in 10 years they can put out a 1.1 update! Sheesh.

Joking aside, hey if people want to buy in, good for them. Won't be me...

Wonder if they'll push No Man's Sky off the "Augh, you never delivered what you promised, we hate you!!!" pedestal?

;-)

@Louis: Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 cost $250M to make, so... $168M really doesn't sound like a lot to me in comparison. Sure, the CoD's price tag includes marketing costs i think, but still.

This game is aiming a bit higher than a friggin CoD.

Most of CoD: MW2's cost was marketing. The game itself cost about 40 - 50 million dollars to make.

@groowagon: Thank you! I actually did not know the cost for COD MW2. That's good to know for perspective. I officially turn down my sarcasm 2 notches. ;-)

You are absolutely right, they are aiming for something a bit more complex than CoD.

@Louis: Right one team builds the engine and all 3 companies use it and reskin it every year not hard to do and doesn't take much money. They're trying to make the most in-depth game in existence and it's not out fast enough....

This game is still growing by the days, one should never expect a release date, this was told many times and as a Backer, I don't mind playing the waiting game either. But for now, time to play 3.0.

As for buying land, no thanks. I already paid good money for the Aegis Vanguard Ship and that's all I'm doing from there.

@davillain-: Heh, have fun. I've given up on the PTU until they fix my Comet (Loadout manager isn't working right with the gimbals and now it seems you can even select it) and the MFDs (The lack of radar and ship indicators hurts). Damage seems way off in 3.0 too, Panthers might as well be shooting pellets.

I just melted my Vanguard the other day though (Switched to the Sabre Comet). It was my dream ship from the description, but the lack of a rework made me frustrated. Now if the Vanguard was carrier capable then I may have stuck with it.

Edit: I know it is selfish as it's about testing, but tie all that into poor fps and it's hard to stay dedicated (I may go the offline route, but that is even more selfish). Either way from the little I got to play of 3.0 it is awesome (They just need to bring cruise mode back, using afterburner is ridiculous for 3.0).

@cornbredx: The small parcel they're selling is 4km x 4km or 988 acres. The big one is twice that. Parcel itself is not really a unit of measurement, but has been considered to be 40 acres from use in the 1800's, though it's more of a descriptor.

but of course they will! why wouldn't they give idiots even MORE options to flush their money down the toilet! you might as well give your money away to charity; at least you would be helping someone that needs it, rather than make that hack chris roberts even richer.

this game will go down in history, i can feel it. and by that, i don't mean it will be remembered in a positive way, if you get my drift. the FAILURE of this game alone will make people weary of crowd funding for many years to come.

@lonesamurai1: I admit, I'm still quite excited for it, but paying real money for land in a game is a bit shitty. Oh well, as long as you can also earn it in game, no biggy.
