Star Citizen Single-Player Trailer Shows A Lot Of Celebrities

Has a video game ever featured this many celebrities?

Star Citizen's crowdfunding effort has been immensely successful. By the latest count, it's brought in more than $195 million. Some of that money has gone toward paying big-name actors to appear in the game's Squadron 42 single-player mode. And now, developer Cloud Imperium Games has released an impressive new trailer showing many of the big names who are lending their likenesses and voices to the game.

The trailer, which was released at the Star Citizen fan event CitizenCon, shows celebrities like Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Henry Cavill, John Rhys Davies, Liam Cunningham, and Ben Mendelsohn. We don't know for sure, but this appears to be one of the most celebrity-filled video games ever. Check out the trailer below.

The trailer comes not long after Cloud Imperium Games shared more details on Star Citizen's new Alpha 3.3 update. It adds a new face-scanning Face over IP feature, as well as more ships, weapons, enemy characters, and lots more. Check out GameSpot's interview with the developer here to learn more.

Squadron 42, which bills itself as a "cinematic single-player adventure," sees you playing as a rookie combat pilot. Along the way, you'll come into contact with the characters played by all the celebrities in the trailer above.

Pledging $45 gets you instant access to the Arena Commander dogfighting/racing mode and the first-person shooter mode Star Marine. These modes, and Squadron 42, like Star Citizen, remain in active development with no official release date announced as of yet.

Literally 6-7 years in development and instead of showing core features of the game they show you a bunch of celebrities. Anybody who actually thinks this will be a AAA game when it comes out is a complete fool and I do not trust your life decisions.

@EightdaDemon: er......................they have showed off core features, they have been doing that solidly for the past few years. they showed a 1 hour gameplay demo. they have detailed pretty much everything that you will be able to do. i mean, its all there on their website and youtube channel. why don't you do a little research in future.

@thegoodhustler: It's like the news. Not everybody is going to do actual research on it, they are just going to watch the 1-2 minute segment that scratches the surface and be done with it.

@ccgod: they do deliver a finished game for that and dont scam money through fundraising. Not that I play FIFA or love EA, just saying when you comparing like that.

The comment section for Gamespot when a new Star Citizen/SQ42 article comes out is always the best. I'm not saying skepticism or defending is wrong of course, but the people choosing sides either against or backing it until the end are just great (No matter what comes out, it is like US politics where the moderates are completely ignored. All you see are those backing the "party").

I won't lie and say I'm not a backer with high hopes for this game, but I can understand some skepticism. The staunch 100% against or for is what I can't understand. This is a potentially ground breaking game, and it is potentially the biggest flop in gaming history. Nobody can truly say, especially those who don't follow Star Citizen without actually doing any research (It is very hard to keep up though, the amount of content released is quite substantial and I can understand that someone with an opinion isn't 100% informed [Neither am I]).

Time will tell, not some random claim of it being a scam, flop, or the best game ever.

Edit: The trailer was great though, very entertaining. I hope to see more from CitizenCon though.

@cainetao11: Which is fine, I am as well. Quite honestly I've never been so excited for a game before.

There is just so much "White Knighting" or "Hating" for Star Citizen.

Man I cannot wait for this game. I guess it's perfectly normal for people to feel pessimistic due to how shady this industry has become but I have hope that this will turn out to be a fantastic and a game changing experience. In my opinion the industry is in need of something to change the typical formula of what we're used to in AAA FPSs. Especially with single players that are narrative driven. Sure some games can work the traditional ways of being linear but I think companies just aren't daring enough to try something new. Stuff like this are bound to make people feel divisive which is okay.

It also helps that it's a PC exclusive so they aren't tied down to any technical limitations that the consoles have. But I have no issues if they end up having to port it onto consoles later on. As long as its being made as a PC game first then you're bound to expect something different and unique for the platform. Hopefully something as revolutionary as Half-Life and Crysis.

@euphoricshadow: Unless consoles get a major overhaul or they sell their tech to them for their servers they won't ever come to consoles unless it's just the single player portion. Bigger companies don't want change they want what's easy and makes them the most money which is why they want this game to fail. If devs from bioware broke off and started a kickstarter for KOTOR3 it would be funded in a couple hours no publisher needed and that scares them.

@ccgod: Sad but true. And here I was thinking for years that it was just simply my interest in gaming which was fading away. The industry has become extremely lackluster in the sense that it's all about trends and what makes the most money for the investors. There used to be a time when it was almost entirely about new IPs and passion projects with little compromise. And PC gaming used to be in the forefront of it all. That's when I used to love gaming the most and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same exact way. Especially backers of the game.

CIG is clearly trying to bring back that love for gaming but of course people who never follow this project only care about the way they're handling their business, due to how different it is. A game like this would simply not exist at this level of scale and detail if it weren't for the crowdfunding process. It's an uphill battle but I hope in the end this will convince many folks why it was worth it and why crowdfunding can impact the industry in a positive way.

@ccgod: Yes it is quite depressing to see all the backers of Star Citizen spending thousands of dollars on individual game modules, assets, alpha builds of the game and holding on hope for a promise of a final game without getting the final product in their hands 7 years after the game's announcement. There's a term for this. Its called "Vaporware". Maybe someday Chris Roberts will write a book about it titled "How I Easily Scammed Gamers and Became a Millionaire". Or maybe someday the game will indeed be launched as a full product. Either way, its gamers who will lose if things go wrong and Chris Roberts will walk away with all the cash.

@ccgod: Been following the game even since it was announced. I myself am a big fan of space sim genre as it is quite niche in the gaming industry. What we're seeing here, is a AAA quality big budget space sim title that has never been attempted before. With the size, scope, attention to detail and ambition, I understand it can take time to perfect and finish. I'm not asking for them to rush out this out as it can and will hamper the overall game experience...HOWEVER, I've seen times where too much ambition can fail and lead to downfall for various reasons. Other times, we get promised great many innovative and exciting things in video games only for it to fall flat on release. I'm sure we'd all like to see Star Citizen succeed and release one day in a polished fully fledged state but...seeing all the negative gaming industry trends we do see from time to time, and subsequent failed promises / projects, one cannot help but be skeptical. I myself have learned to tamper my expectations / hype in check because as we know, if something's too good to be true...it probably is. There are exceptions to this rule and I would very much like Star Citizen to be one of that exception but not until we see the finished product in our hands. Still, its good that the devs have been open about their development process and walks us through step by step.

@speed45823: those also fail because of the publishers. Destiny was supposed to be a full fledged rpg with an amazing story with 3 different origin stories pending on what race you picked. Guess what Activision said scrap all that we're cutting up the game to sell off as dlc and not using that story gotta make it more casual.

Or ea with andromeda release it early and unfinished to make a quick buck.

@ccgod: Yes it did but we found out AFTER the game was released. Star Citizen has made lots of promises but hasn't shown everything and more importantly, hasn't been released yet. So the possibility still exists. No Man's Sky is a cautionary tale that we need to learn from going forward. I'm not saying Star Citizen will follow similar paths but...until we get the final product in our hands, anything's possible.

@speed45823: No they did it on purpose they lied their azz's off to sell their game and it worked. They road on the coattails of this game to propel them selves. The mmo part is far from completion, the way they talked about the single player game is that it's a lot closer to being done then we thought. The sp game takes far less assets to work properly and has been their main focus since the beginning. SC shows off things weekly and you can play a lot of what they have announced.
