Star Citizen Regional Servers Coming Sooner

You'll be able to choose from North America, Europe, and Australia.

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games announced today that the game's regional servers feature is coming out sooner than anticipated. Creator Chris Roberts said in a note today that the release of regional servers is being moved up to Alpha 2.6.1.

No Caption Provided

Regional servers will allow players to choose a server based on their geographic location. The options include North America, Europe, and Australia. This should, in theory at least, provide an optimal connection. "Once these are running, we'll be able to run more tests to assess whether more locations will be needed," Roberts said.

Speaking generally about Alpha 2.6.1, Roberts said the patch is "progressing nicely."

"There's still some UI work to complete and stability issues to iron out, but, as you can see in our updated production schedule report, we're almost ready to get this latest patch into the players' hands," Roberts said.

Star Citizen has brought in more than $142 million from its massively successful crowdfunding effort. Parts of the game have been made available but the full title is without a release date.

Chris Roberts must have been sad to take some of the money to put it for game servers instead of putting it all in his pocket.

After playing No Man's Sky. I've been wanting something more. A lot of investors have kept star citizen going for years. I sure hope Chris Roberts will deliver cause right now I wander if this game will have a full release.

@larsondir82: Well I'm an early backer and I'm very pleased with the progress CIG has made to this point...I say take their time and take as long as they need to do it right...If they rush it to release just to please the inpatient people who haven't invested a dime into it thus far. All we will hear about is people complaining about how it's unfinished and doesn't have any of the content promised...Moral of the story is you never rush the greatness that is Star Citizen!

East coast US server please.. already deal with enough west-only games that provide a poor experience. For us easterners, there's almost no difference between latency to the west coast vs Europe; they're equally bad.

@DAOWAce: They are running the US from VA currently iirc. Because they are using the AWS cloud it will be simple for them to expand to other AWS locales as they just did with AU in time for the initial release of this tech. Check out http://www.cloudping.info/ for some of the possible locales and their latencies.

@slypher9: lol Blizzard.

Blizzard removed all the east coast servers for their games, except Starcraft 2.

WoW's eastern servers got moved to central a few years ago, along with the rest of the eastern ones, sans SC2. The old classic battle.net realms were US West and US East.. but now instead of East physically being located in the east, they're in central, so this made their older games lag more too.

Diablo 3 and Hearthstone are west coast only, and as such D3 lags so bad I just quit playing since it completely ruined the speed builds I used after they removed them and made changes to "reduce server load".

I currently play HotS competitively on a Master level and the removal of the eastern server still hurts to this day. It's even lost me a few games. We've complained about it since they removed it but no amount of complaints have gotten them to add it back.

Blizzard is a shining example of a company who tries to cut costs as much as possible and milk as much money as possible from their customers, despite making over a billion dollars of revenue a year and can fully support all the regional servers they used to have. So, so stupid.

$142 million? How the hell did they do that? I thought the most a game has got so far through crowdfunding is less than 10 mil. But pretty impressive if they really did collect all that just through crowdfunding. Looks like it's indeed possible to fund triple A games that way.

Also funny to see their stretch goals. "For another million $ we'll add pets." Must be the most realistic virtual pets ever created.

@Atzenkiller: Yeah they were running out of ideas for stretch goals at the end. They were never saying that it would cost $1 million for each stretch goal. It's just meant to be a symbolic perk at each million.

@Atzenkiller: It's not just a statement on AAA gaming being crowd fundable, Star Citizen with $142+ million is one of the most expensive games ever made. I think only Star Wars The Old Republic and GTA V have had higher development budgets, that's not including marketing of course but even with the marketing budgets included SC is still in the top 10.

There is a valid argument for it being two (very tightly linked) games though.

@charminsuavecito: That's why they said in a recent interview/live that they won't give precise dates anymore but they will let people look at the production schedule (you can find on their site) which should be updated everyday but they still say that changes can be made so we don't have to expect that the release dates are respected at 100%.

They did that because first people complained because they didn't tell any release dates for the patch and then people complained because those dates weren't respected.

EDIT : Found the link : https://robertsspaceindustries.com/schedule-report

@charminsuavecito: I am playing the current version which is still a tiny portion of the game. Man, it is AMAZING but yes, still bugged. However, I was flying around a meteorite belt for like 30 mins and found a wreck. I went EVA and inside of it, took me 10-15 minutes to find the bridge to find game lore. The pvp is insane (space pvp) and star marine is definitely on the right track. Had a few eva fights (but star marine is mainly inside) but I can tell you now, for the 49 bucks that I spent (to get S42 and SC) so two huge games for the price of 50 bucks and already an awesome alpha), I NEVER in the last 10 years have seen my money as well spent on a game as here. The details in the game already now are amazing and the universe looks BEAUTIFUL, I mean Ultra HD beautiful and not the ED blurry low res universe background....Man, I do not care for delays, I already spent like 100 hrs in the alpha alone and cool stuff keeps being implemented.

@charminsuavecito: yeah I own Elite Dangerous and @bfeinberg is correct. Elite Dangerous is a shell of a game compared to Star Citizen current Alpha state. ED has really no content.....and Elite Dangerous uses the same repetitious assets used over and over again it has no real diversity like SC. ED has many years of development to bring anywhere close to what SC already offers....Main problem with ED is they focused so much on making there universe huge now they have to go back in a fill it with content which really kills the emerson. SC on the other hand is building it and adding content as they go...which lends itself well to keeping players ingadged in to a story line....

@charminsuavecito: All will be implemented soon enough...And even with that being said SC still has more immersion with less content due to the fact that SC has multi crewed ships you can actually walk around and EVA out of. Whereas in ED has no multi crew...your character is basically your ship your kind of stuck in the ship unless you launch your rover. Which what I disliked about Eve Online always being stuck in your ship. SC is breaking new ground with the EVA mechanics

As far as Planetary landings in ED it's a nice upgrade but yet again has very little content to interact with on those planet surfaces. As for VR it's still not optimized for ED.. the graphic resolution suffers greatly, And the only thing they do have in ED that is working great is the mining...

As for cargo in ED you basicly scoop it into your ship and it shows an image in your inventory. Where in SC you will actually have to load the cargo into your cargo hold, there will be no UI showing what's in your ship Cargo hold because you will actually walk back and inspect your cargo in First person. Because unlike in ED you can leave your seat.

Same goes for Bounty Hunting you can't capture the person your hunting and put them onto your ship. you just have to destroy them to get your reward every time. In SC bounty Hunting you will be able to put the actual person you're hunting and put them onto your ship if you so choose.....That's the immersion that will make the difference.

Star Citizen does more with less...It has more immersive content then what ED is able to provide.

@charminsuavecito: yeah... well it was genuinely their goal, but with projects like this one you will encounter massive obstacles, constantly. it's better to not stare at those release schedules too carefully.

Finally. It has been more or less unplayable in europe. Atleast for me.

I know that the servers are not the only problem, so here's for hoping that the new Starnet improves things in the 3.0 when it releases. That, combined with more localized servers. This game is about to get real, slowly but steadily.

I think this bodes well for Squadron 42 and other content (as far as release goes), I don't imagine they'd be making such an investment unless they had to, or felt compelled to, i.e. larger more significant updates were going to be coming more often.

@mrbojangles25: i think it's purely for gameplay reasons for Star Citizen, not a distribution solution for SQ42 or patches. Of course distribution will benefit from this too.

@groowagon: yeah totally for gameplay, that is what has me so excited :D But it represents a major investment, something I don't think a game company would do lightly unless they had something big coming. I mean, why invest in regional servers for relatively* no reason?

I'm probably wrong, though. But a guy can hope, yeah? Maybe we got beta coming soon lol!

*relativelyno reason being alpha testing, basic demo'ing of the game, etc. Not bulk gameplay stuff.

@mrbojangles25: I don't think we'll see the beta that soon, you can find the schedules production on their site, if I remember well, the last update planned there is the alpha 4.0, so one thing is sure, we won't have the beta before they get to the alpha 4.0 and we don't know when it will be

@mrbojangles25: yeah i know. they are likely renting the servers, so it's not that massive investment, but definitely still costly.

i think we see beta in 2019... honestly. but i don't mind. if the progress is as promising as it looks (from all the dev updates), it will be the best game ever made. it would be worth waiting for even 10 years.

Good stuff and a fairly positive article on Star Citizen from Eddie makes a nice change.

Just had to get the crowd funding total in though.

This is good news for Star Citizen players outside of North America.

Admittedly, I live in NA so my experience with latency in MP matches has been good, so I have no complaints. Hopefully this improves MP latency for players in Europe and elsewhere.
