Star Citizen Raised $35 Million In 2017

The ambitious PC space game made more than DOUBLE what the 700 games on Kickstarter made last year.

Star Citizen raised a lot of money in 2017. According to data collected by Polygon, the super-ambitious PC space sim raised $34.91 million last year, which is down from $36.11 million the year prior. In total, Star Citizen has raised an astonishing $175.9 million, according to the game's own publicly available funding data. Note that these figures do not include money given back via returns, but even with those accounted for, the number is surely still huge.

To put the $34.91 million in perspective, it's more than double the money ($17.25 million) that the more than 700 Kickstarter video game projects brought in, combined, in 2017. It's been two years running that Star Citizen's own yearly funding tally has more than doubled the combined efforts of every video game project on Kickstarter.

No Caption Provided

Star Citizen launched on Kickstarter in 2012 and made its original funding goal of $500,000 in a week. The campaign ended with $2.1 million. Developer Cloud Imperium then shifting funding to its own website where it has brought in millions and millions through the sale of ships and, more recently, parcels of land throughout the in-game universe.

The game's development is being led by Chris Roberts, who designed the Wing Commander games (and directed the 1999 Freddie Prinze Jr. starring movie of the same name).

In other Star Citizen news, Crytek is suing Cloud Imperium over breach of contract and copyright infringement claims. Crytek is suing based on the claim that the the Star Citizen studio did not live up to the promises it made for using Crytek's CryEngine. Cloud Imperium says the lawsuit is "meritless" and that it is prepared to fight "vigorously" in court if it has to.

$176 Million and the game still isn’t out yet.

Maybe they should stop wasting the money on Chris Roberts mansion, Cars, vacations, $10,000 coffee machines, $10,000 custom couches and $10,000 Star Trek sliding doors at the offices.

Complain about it as long as you want, but Star Citizen found their playerbase and it's probably getting bigger. And at this point people who scream "scam!1!1!!" sound like conspiracy theorists, CIG actually start to show stuff and we just had a big patch. Exciting times for pc gaming and gaming in general!

@hansyolo: When we have evidence that Chris Roberts lives in a mansion, with multiple cars, goes on vacations and is living a rich mans life style while having no work but Star Citizen....

You have to ask yourself where the money is really going.

@stuff238: Just to remind you, Chris Roberts developed a very sucessful game franchise called "Wing Commander" back in the 90s and produced a few good movies like "Lucky Number Slevin". He was rich before he came up with Star Citizen. 450 people work at CIG at this time in multiple studios and you think Roberts bought Ferraris instead of paying his employees?

@infiniin: Honestly, I'll bet the folks who are responsible for most of that $35 million are the ones playing the current alpha builds and already super sold on Star Citizen. When CI finally launches something for general consumption, I doubt the people into it for a bunch of money are going to be upset by it (and they'll probably have been playing it for a couple years at that point). Most everybody else wont have kicked in anything to get ripped off.

@Mogan: It's true that existing backers certainly contributing to the $35 million raised in 2017. I did. Although I pledged less in 2017 than I did in previous years (because I used store credit to buy and then melt the new concept ships and vehicles, reusing the same money over and over and over again).

The statistics indicate that the Star Citizen community grew by ~400,000 backers in 2017. $35 mil divided by 400k is $87.5, and the game packages start at $45. There's an extra $42.50 to account for. That's slightly less than half of the money pledged in 2017, which means that you lost your bet that "most of that $35 million are the ones playing the current alpha builds..." Some new backers could've bought more expensive game packages than the $45 starters. The rest of the money can be attributed to existing backers who bought additional ships.

I kickstarted this thing way back, I know I have some passwords and login somewhere so I guess I could play it now if I want, I just have no desire to. It just looks like a lot of nice simulations modules tied together. Where is the story etc.. I dont know . I'll come back and look at it again in another year, Hell Ive already paid for it.

@totallytc: I know I pitched in $30, now my account is probably worth $200 just from the free stuff they gave to kickstarter backers since the game launched. When you log in you'll have lots of perks people have to pay for now.

@totallytc: That's how they're building together they're making separate modules then once they're all complete putting them together to make the game.

So the real question becomes whether or not they have any incentive to RELEASE the game. You know, set a hard target date, call it "1.0 / complete," and (most importantly) put it up to be judged against its peers.

@Pyrosa: Oh Star Citizen is never going to be "complete" until the game dies. Just like ARC or PUBG. CI will keep iterating and iterating, and eventually they'll call one of their iterations the "release version", but then they'll just keep on patching, and adding, and redesigning. My guess is, that by the time Star Citizen actually has its "release", the majority of people who actually care about Star Citizen will have been playing the early access for a while and reviews will be totally meaningless.

Unlike what the cultists of Citizentology claim, I follow the development of Scam Citizen closely. The game is just a big joke. The current build is unplayable and sucks. People are getting 5 fps with powerful PCs and the ships randomly explode. The program constantly shuts down by itself. The ridiculous promises of Chris Roberts are not respected. These new studios are not capable of creating the game they promised. Yet the cultists continue to buy 1000$ jpgs of ships that are not even created yet. The game has a whole army of cultists like Reavern who praise the game and claim it's good even when the evidence says the contrary. At least some of the backers show a speck of intelligence and demand a refund.

@nurnberg: Utter nonsense. But if you actually had been following "the development of Scam[sic] Citizen closely" you'd know that. The main reason the game plays choppy/laggy is because it is running on netcode (required for bug testing), which is also why it runs exactly the same on a GTX 1060 as it does on a GTX 1080Ti - the netcode simply won't allow a higher framerate. There are hacks you can do to disable the netcode and it then runs just fine.

@nurnberg: The effort you put into trolling and lying about Star Citizen while remaining willfully ignorant about the game's development is utterly pathetic. You are an ignoramus and compulsive liar!

For those who are actually interested in Star Citizen and Squadron 42's ongoing development, here are some great videos to check out:

Star Citizen Alpha 3.0 Gameplay- Scale of Delamar & Travel to GrimHex

Star Citizen Alpha 3.0 Gameplay - Dogfight money is good money

Star Citizen - What’s Coming in 2018?

This is just the tip of the iceberg for informative Star Citizen content. There are a dozen streamers dedicated to Star Citizen alone who have published hundreds of videos of Alpha gameplay, as well as their summaries and commentaries on the official content published by Cloud Imperium Games.

All of this information is out there, and it's obvious that the haters and trolls haven't seen any of it -- or they LIE and pretend that they haven't because it doesn't support their false narrative against the Star Citizen.

@Metalnoid: you act like its a finished game. They literally just released the 3.0 build with all mechanics and technology of their own design that requires a lot of optimization and bug fixes. Do you not understand that games, especially ones of this caliber, ambition, and innovation takes time to make? do you think companies put their money in a game machine and out pops a video game?

@Metalnoid: AFAIK the game is still running on netcode (required for bug testing), which makes it run pretty much the same (i.e. relatively choppy) regardless if you're using a GTX 1060 or GTX 1080Ti. It's easy to test - just set the game to lowest visual settings and see if you really do get a tangible increase in framerate. My guess is that you won't because the netcode can only parse the game so fast. Needless to say, the final release won't be running on netcode.

@Metalnoid: Having down some research, I'm only slightly right. The game definitely does run better in "offline mode" (something I noticed myself), but this is not due to poor netcode per se (which is what I thought). Rather it's due to the game having to parse and render up to 50 other players when playing online. The fewer the players, the better it runs. It's all explained here:

@Metalnoid: Star Citizen costs $45 for the full game, which includes a starter ship. The game is currently in Alpha, which is why backers can only play the Alpha. If you can only run Star Citizen at 20 fps then you have a PoS PC. Star Citizen isn't a console game. It won't run on a $500 shitbox. Star Citizen was pitched from inception as an uncompromising PC game that will take advantage of the most powerful gaming tech. My 3-year-old gaming PC has an i7 4790k OC'd to 4.6 GHz and a GTX 780 Ti, and it averages 40 fps at 1080p Very High settings.

You're wasting your money on shitty consoles and crappy PCs designed to do nothing but check email and surf Facebook. Get a real gaming computer and stop blaming Star Citizen. You're the one who is broke.
