Star Citizen PC Client Could Be 100 GB

Cloud Imperium Games reveals projected initial client size for upcoming first-person universe game.

You could have probably already guessed that the Star Citizen PC client would be huge given the massive scope of the first-person universe game. But now we have an actual number: 100 GB.

Jeremy Masker, Star Citizen director of game operations, revealed the figure in a post on the game's forums. A fan predicted that Star Citizen's final release would be "significantly more compressed and optimized" than it is currently, leading to a client size of 30-40 GB.

That's not the case, however.

"As I have already said, I would not count on this," Masker replied. "The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40 GB. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100 GB."

Masker went on to say that developer Cloud Imperium Games is optimizing game patching, but "this is unlikely to reduce actual patch size."

"Again, each patch has 100s of assets, each of these assets are at times 200 MB, this leads to 2-6 GB patches, and if we end up doing a file type re-factor and have to re-download 30-40% of the assets on the hard-drive, then the patch will be 14-20 GB," he said.

As PC Gamer points out, a massive file size isn't such a big issue for players with zippy connections and unlimited data. But it could be something of a problem for people not as fortunate.

Star Citizen, already the most successful crowdfunding project of any kind in history, is now closing in on $75 million.

I really don't see a problem here for anyone except for those who have less then 200gb monthly cap.

100gb is nothing, i have 8.5 TB storage since 2009 and i am capped only because my case can't hold more then 5 HDD's. I am thinking of swapping 2x 2TB drives for 2x 4TB soon.

Also i doubt many gamers have less then 10Mbit connection these days and i strongly believes if the game is indeed 100GB+ in size on release then devs will atleast give a week to preload the game (just like GTA V).

For best performance i do believe a dedicated 250GB SSD is a must because well everyone knows that hdd access sucks.

Avatar image for patch_file

Dedicated SSD, I can handle that.

Avatar image for Bond_Villain

Not a problem. Large terabyte drives are getting cheaper

So, bring it on Chris!!

Avatar image for tarrgot

Good thing I got a 1TB SSD

Now, Real hard core PC gamers won't just have a Boot drive separated from their Steam drive, they'll also need a Star Citizen Drive.

Avatar image for jc3bull

That's half of my monthly allotment. I hope they sell a version on disc.

Avatar image for igorphoenix

<< LINK REMOVED >> you mean version on 14 discs, right?

Real games are coming! You ain't invited ;)

For me 100 gigs are no problem, I have over 2 TB of free space left and a 50mbit/s connection with no limit on the amount I can download :) As a backer I am still looking forward to it

Avatar image for Jedilink109

Well it's a good thing I just got a 2 TB hard drive recently...

If you're gonna play Star Citizen and you don't have a SSD yet. You now have a good reason. A 120 GB SSD goes for about 55 bucks and will be blazing fast in terms of loading.

Non-Issue for the PC Master Race

Anyone that is worried about this number due to HDD space needs to start living on this side of 2010.

Anyone that is worried about bandwidth caps... I am sorry that your ISP is absolutely shafting you. That sucks.

All-in-all though, methinks this won't be a problem. Gaming rigs have been hungry for this kind of thing for years.

<< LINK REMOVED >>my monthly cap is 200gb download and its very big down here. thats half. i know people with 100gb download limit. thats entire month gone. you wouldnt be able to play the game properly after that since you will be capped. and every patch 3gb...and how many discs would that take to install? or is it online only?

Avatar image for Damnation_6

More then a million dollars per gig it is xD

Avatar image for ArchoNils2

<< LINK REMOVED >> Your math is wrong :S It is more than a gig per Million (100 > 75)

Avatar image for JRLennis

Yeowch! I figured I would need a much more robust PC to play this. Now I learn my 1.5 Mb/sec connection speed isn't good enough either...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well if you have a couple of days to preload this thing before release I would say definitely go for it.

Avatar image for Dexyu

pfff 100gb easy peasy

Avatar image for b1ank

I feel sorry for people with capped broadband (yes, its still a thing)

Avatar image for HesamB

<< LINK REMOVED >> capped at 3gb a month. yes you heard that correctly, 3.

Avatar image for chesaliz

<< LINK REMOVED >> or uncapped broadband but only at the speed of < 5MBps

Avatar image for tsunami2311

how much of that is uncompressed audio? or prerenders cgi?? cause with out that it cant be that huge unless the game is 100x bigger then any other game out there

Avatar image for sketchy_llama

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well to be fair Dead Rising 3 for the PC came in at 28gb and it doesn't even hold a candle to SC

Avatar image for sketchy_llama

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I surely have I own it and play it and I'm not bashing it so put your pom poms away. I was just stating that even with compressed games are clocking in at 25-30gb as is.

Avatar image for sketchy_llama

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> No worries hell I think Assassin's Creed 4 clocked in at 25.8 gigs. Not sure about Unity or even Farcry but yeah a lot of games are already hitting the 30 gig range with as much assets in SC I can see it easily pushing 100. Time for them to release a SSD Collectors edition comes preinstalled lol

Avatar image for D0cs

<< LINK REMOVED >> This is a devs estimate of how big the game would be with all the compression and optimization they could do.

There's a lot of games well over 50GB today, GTA V is 65GB, so it's not hard to believe it when this is meant to be a huge open world MMO with bleeding edge graphics and a 50 hour singleplayer campaign too.

Avatar image for tsunami2311

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> yah there is alot games that 50+ gbs these days and alot that has uncompressed audio too

Avatar image for Brakkyn

Holy crap. I need to buy a new hard drive, now. Or uninstall some old games. But, dangit, those are MY GAMES.

Avatar image for XIntoTheBlue

100 gigs? Dang, that's quite the size. I'd have to get another SSD just to support a game of that size (I need to upgrade anyway).

Building a new rig for this and if it doesn't deliver call me Tupac and picture me tr0llin'

Avatar image for DanielL5583

Just gonna put this out there - 100GB, given the scale and style of the game, is entirely justified.

This game pushes computers to the limits, becoming essentially a new Crysis in terms of raw graphical power (which amusing, given how this is a CryEngine game). And in doing so, it uses large textures, has high-poly models and more likely than not will have fairly large sound files, as well as walls and walls of scripting.

100GB is justified, and to be honest, I was expecting it to be larger, honestly.

Avatar image for oflow

By the time it's done when you buy a hard copy they should just mail it to you on an ssd

Avatar image for sketchy_llama

<< LINK REMOVED >> Sounds like a great idea for a collectors edition SC themed SSD

Avatar image for Liliroots

I wish they will release this on hardcopy. However, if it can be done overnight then I will be happy =]

Avatar image for DanielL5583

<< LINK REMOVED >> If it was to get a physical release, the only way to actually be able to install it would be via Blu-Ray discs. And there aren't enough Blu-Ray drives in computers to warrant it, unfortunately.
100GB on a fibre connection is probably gonna be an overnight run, maybe five or six hours. Though, since I'm on old-fashioned'll take me at the least an entire day.

Avatar image for Damnation_6

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> With a bit of luck they make the system where you can already play after you downloaded a certain amount of the game and the rest download in the background as the explore the first few systems.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

<< LINK REMOVED >> micro sd cards or usb drives would work just fine. they can charge a small premium to those who wish for an alternative.

Avatar image for chronolzx

can you please put this on a BDXL for me? thanks

Avatar image for Sam_021

Console peasants don't know what that means, PS5/Xbone2 will explain that in 5 years time.
