Star Citizen PC Client Could Be 100 GB
Cloud Imperium Games reveals projected initial client size for upcoming first-person universe game.

Jeremy Masker, Star Citizen director of game operations, revealed the figure in a post on the game's forums. A fan predicted that Star Citizen's final release would be "significantly more compressed and optimized" than it is currently, leading to a client size of 30-40 GB.
That's not the case, however.
"As I have already said, I would not count on this," Masker replied. "The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40 GB. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100 GB."
Masker went on to say that developer Cloud Imperium Games is optimizing game patching, but "this is unlikely to reduce actual patch size."
"Again, each patch has 100s of assets, each of these assets are at times 200 MB, this leads to 2-6 GB patches, and if we end up doing a file type re-factor and have to re-download 30-40% of the assets on the hard-drive, then the patch will be 14-20 GB," he said.
As PC Gamer points out, a massive file size isn't such a big issue for players with zippy connections and unlimited data. But it could be something of a problem for people not as fortunate.
Star Citizen, already the most successful crowdfunding project of any kind in history, is now closing in on $75 million.
