Activision 2900916announced in December 2002 that it had signed Stainless Steel, the studio behind Empire Earth, to do an original historical real-time strategy game. Today, Activision revealed the first details on the game, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. Empires will have an epic scope that focuses on the last 1,000 years of history. As they advance through eras, players will command medieval troops like longbowmen and charging knights and the signature land, air, and sea units of WWII, such as Tiger tanks, storm troopers, Spitfires, and submarines.

"It's like no other historical RTS game that's ever been done before," said Rick Goodman, lead designer and president of Stainless Steel Studios. "Players will be able to build up massive empires by utilizing each civilization's totally unique and distinct historical abilities, battlefield weapons, and special technologies. The differentiation between these historically based civilizations is really unprecedented."

We'll have more on Empires as details become available.
