Square Enix Signs WW2 FPS Battalion 1944, Coming To PS4, Xbox One, PC

The Final Fantasy publisher's Collective unit will publish the multiplayer game, due out this summer.

Square Enix announced today that it has reached an agreement with UK-based studio Bulkhead Interactive to publish the developer's World War II multiplayer shooter Battalion 1944. The game will launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a release lined up for this summer.

Battalion 1944 was successfully funded on Kickstarter a year ago this month, raising more than $450,000 from 10,000 backers. That was well above the studio's target ($142,000), and the extra funding allows the studio to make a game that will "challenge the biggest AAA shooters in the industry," Bulkhead said.

Battalion 1944 will be published through Square Enix's Collective division that works with independent studios to help them with things like marketing services and testing. A major pillar of the Square Enix Collective is that studios retain creative control and all brand rights.

This is not the first time Bulkhead has worked with Square Enix, as the developer partnered with the company for the first-person puzzle game, The Turing Test.

In a statement, Bulkhead senior producer Joe Brammer said the studio received "some strong offers from other very big publishers" for Battalion 1944. He said Bulkhead's existing relationship with Square Enix was a major factor in deciding to go with them again for the World War II shooter.

The multiplayer shooter aims to capture the "core of classic multiplayer shooters" while using the "most advanced industry technology." You can see some early gameplay footage here.

Um... Battalion 1944? Battlefield 1943? Am I the only one who thinks that's weird?

@dattwood: Not weird, just good sense since Battlefield started using single digits, and become less interesting.

The game has a neat idea but it needs a lot of work before it'll be done. And I mean a lot.

I bought Days of War but something just felt "off" with that game. I'll check back with it after it leaves Early Access so this game has my attention. I didn't back them in their Kickstarter but I'll definitely get this once Early Access starts and try it out. If I don't like what I see, I can always refund like I did with Days of War.

@lonesamurai1: That killed any shred of interest I was about to have for this game.

@7tizz: EA has experience with all kinds of games, and they regularly mess up marketing. I also doubt it takes much, if any, knowledge about the genre to know how to market a game.

Call of Duty 2 with updated graphics? No thanks, doesn't convince me in 2017.

@Berserk8989: Because of the name, I'm thinking more like Battlefield 1942 with updated graphics, which would make it like a spiritual Battlefield 1944, although I have no idea what their game is moving towards of the two.

Interesting ! The market is saturated with shooters at the moment so could be swamped by competition but if its a solid shooter I will no doubt make a purchase here !

@se7en1989: Titanfall .. halo .. gears .. ghosts .. siege .. division .. not to mention the older games people still play .. there are lots of shooters around in one form or the other .. but there are always room for good games no matter what the genre !

@ltjohnnyrico: And you didn't even mention all the indie titles, like Heroes & Generals and Verdun.

@se7en1989: Titanfall 2. But I agree it does not feel as saturated as in previous years.
