Now Playing: New Bravely Default Announcement Teased - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Octopath Traveler is a hit for Square Enix, and the company has indicated it plans to publish more games like it. In a series of tweets, Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki outlined a Square Enix earnings conference at which it discussed the game's success and future plans.

The company says the sales have been stronger than its forecast, and exceeded expectations particularly in the west. It chalks all this up to an increased appreciation for JRPG tropes over the last few years, the appeal to old-school fans, and new elements like its striking diorama visual style. The company went on to say we can expect similar games to be coming.

It also noted the Nintendo Switch as a good platform for "middle-range" games, but said that future games wouldn't necessarily be Switch-exclusive like Octopath. The company could be referring to mid-range games similar to this one, or it could be referring to games that mix classic JRPG elements with updated features.

This isn't the first time Square Enix has attempted to recapture the magic of its old-school RPGs, though. Tokyo RPG Factory was a studio established specifically to explore these concepts, resulting in I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear. Those two received only middling receptions.

Octopath Traveler came from a different angle, though. It's from the producers of Bravely Default and Bravely Second, a series known for updating classic tropes in modern ways. That appears to have made the difference. The Bravely social media account recently recognized the connection by using a banner celebrating the sales of Octopath to hint at some kind of Bravely announcement.

Bravely Default is also awesome, so no wonder I loved Octopath Traveler as well.
Just let them take the lead on Tokyo RPG Factory, because they have not nailed it.

I like sega, they just care, but financially make bad financial decisions because they generally care about a product, and getting it out there to everyone in any platform (same as unreal studios they also want their games and supported games cross platform) sadly when it comes to western understanding and reading the market sega does a great job even if it's as a publisher. Capcoms finally starting to see why they were a cool company from previous generations (I have no idea why this realisation of incentives shares in gaming would be a good investment because investing into game company shares as a individual with lots of money doesn't really mean good decision unless you are divindi= part share holder of Ubisoft) anyways square enix makes absolutely no sense in today's market because today's market is about the games, not the hardware because with out games there is no motivation to buy hardware (unless your one of those people that do what I think you do rather enjoy games) so limiting games to general specific markets only makes the gamer more frustrated and less interested in the product.

But console war exclusives is just generational thing that's why the argument just goes on for ever, but companies do create the problem.

Better not be switch exclusive.

Locking people out of games is extremely consumer unfriendly.

Fewer games like XV then?

Or will FFXVI have 3 years of DLC to complete the game?

Could it be? That they finally, finally get it? Nah, I bet they're working on more FF15 DLC as we speak.

@Thanatos2k: Well that much is confirmed. Question that remains is, will there be more after the 8th Episode DLC?

I just want them to make FFXVI like Lost Odyssey, that's all i want.

@Tidus1012: I would love that, just no random battles

@Lordcrabfood: I like random battles

@alexofburg:

Why?

Avatar image for alexofburg

@KotomineKirei: It adds suspense when you are close to death, a treasure or exit of a level. But that just my opinion. I think the best way to please both crowds would be to have enemies visable but an option to toggle invisibility to give the random battle feel for those folk like me.

@Lordcrabfood: Random battles are a must. Just like any old jrpg.

@imajinn: not at all, nothing stifles the thrill of exploration more than random battles. It's an archaic gameplay mechanic that is long past it's used by date. More than happy for good old turn based but a massive no to random battles.

@Lordcrabfood: What do you feel would be a good remedy for experience grinding? Yes the random encounters could be annoying but it always worked for the grind.

@imajinn:

Experience grinding is not as big of a problem as random encounters.

Even if it was, they could just add options to change how much experience is gained (0.1x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x, 64x, etc.)

@imajinn: just have enemies on the map like chronotrigger. Honestly I don't care, just no more random battles. I have played sooooo m as my RPGs and it's the one mechanic I have grown to hate.

Great news all around! Keep them coming.. The number of JRPGs have been badly/sadly lacking for the last 10 years.. esp old-school.

And yet they can't seem to understand why no one likes Final Fantasy anymore...

@soliaired50:

More like "nobody likes what they turned FF into".. If i wanted to run around without magic or skills and wack things, i'd play an act/adv game. (or a wrpg... a FPS magic system is still better than no magic.)

As long as they are multi-platform games, I wish them the very best.

@josefo: Likewise. Quit with the Nintendo love. Switch is doing well but it's still on the low end of market share and there is no proof it will continue that momentum for very long. Even the Wii hit a wall at some point..

Avatar image for jach

@Barighm: "Quit with the Nintendo love" why would they quit it after 3 decades?? FF started as an exclusive there, afterwards they got several exclusive spin-offs, new IP's and the first FF remakes.
As long as they don't do the KH spin-off thing again, I couldn't care less if their titles are multi-platform or not.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Barighm: Switch is probably a LOT easier to develop for though. Resource wise. And its market love these kinds of RPG's. You release the same kind of game on a PS4 or Xbox, and there will be a lot of complaints about graphics. And I say this as an avid PS4 player. I don't even own a Switch

Square continues to be a dev I never buy games from. The only time I buy a Square title is of a former Eidos franchise.

@Sevenizz: This is why JRPGs continue to fail on Xbox - the target audience.

Avatar image for o_mac_2

@Sevenizz: Agreed. I bought it on Steam not knowing it was an SE title. Last ever.

Don't worry though, not buying is the right move. It's less than stellar. Just play FF6, but pirate it.
