Square Enix Montreal's next-gen Hitman reportedly canceled, publisher responds [UPDATE]

Publisher provides statement clarifying the matter.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a Square Enix representative provided a statement to GameSpot on the matter.

"There's a bit of confusion around the Hitman projects currently in development at Square Enix-owned studios and so we wanted to take the time to clarify what each studio is working on to clear up some of this confusion. Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise," the representative said. "We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year."

The original story is below.

Square Enix Montreal's next-generation Hitman game has been canceled, according to the LinkedIn profile of a senior game designer at the studio. This project was originally announced as part of the outfit's inception in November 2012, though no details about it ever came to light.

Videogamer, which spotted the LinkedIn page, also found that another developer's resume claims Square Enix Montreal is working on a new Hitman game for iOS and Android. We have reached out to Square Enix for comment, but haven't heard back at press time.

Hitman fans needn't take the news as all bad, however, as another "AAA" Hitman game remains in development at series creator IO Interactive. This game was in pre-production as of June 2012 and its current development status is unknown.

The most recent core Hitman game was November 2012's Hitman: Absolution. For more on that game, check out GameSpot's review.

developers have to realize that mobile games arent the way to go. thanks alot angry birds

Avatar image for charlesdao

Where is the brief case? Why i can hide a sniper on my pocket?

Avatar image for Grenadeh

Good. Absolution blew. This franchise should not have even made it into the 360/PS3 gen, it was done after Hitman 2.

Avatar image for theslovakian38

<< LINK REMOVED >> blood money was outstanding. would count it done after that but 2 was the best for sure

Avatar image for randomkidlol

SQEnix/Eidos Montreal was the guys that made Deux Ex and lots of other great games, and now you put them into making shitty mobile apps?

Jesus wtf are you doing SE

Avatar image for Blood_Angel

<< LINK REMOVED >>SquareEnix Montreal and Eidos Montreal is two studios. SquareEnix Montreal was actually made to make Hitman games not take 6 years to come out, sort of like the Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and so on, franchises.

Avatar image for Hurvl

Wow, a clarification that actually cleared some stuff up! They didn't say anything we didn't already know, but they confirmed some stuff at least.

Avatar image for DAOWAce

Just what we need, more mobile games.

It was probably some good concept that billions of retards wouldn't adopt. Give them back crappy Absolution.

What I would kill just to see the sights of 47 in Dubai.....

*probably some other targets*

IOI should put interesting settings just like they did with Hitman 2. Blood Money and Absolution has too much "America" in it and it's high time we start to see a bit more of Europe.

Avatar image for Navardo95

<< LINK REMOVED >> Exactly my problem they fucking Muricanized Absolution...Blood Money had brilliant diversity..would truly love to see England,Dubai,France,Switzerland etc.

Avatar image for honeycomb06

hitman absolotion was way to easy to beat...Blood money and the ones on PS2 was more of a challenge

Avatar image for Navardo95

One thing I deeply hated about Absolution was the 'murcianization..previous Hitman entries took place around the globe New Zealand,Spain,Australia,U.S,China,India,Portugal etc. while 95% of Absolution takes place in Chicago -_-

Avatar image for ragnar320

make a new dues X and then ill get excited again

Avatar image for 001011000101101

After Absolution, I find it very hard to care. Way to kill off an excellent concept.

Avatar image for honeycomb06

they shoulda made hitman go the GTA/Saint Row route instead of stealth approach because now and days thats what everybody want and look how well GTA V did...jus imagine Agent 47 in GTA world man that shit would be crazy dope

Avatar image for Flonne_N_Etna

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't get it, why can't you just play the GTA/Saints Row/Sleeping Dogs/Mafia/Godfather if you want that?

Avatar image for honeycomb06

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> because those games are always the same i want hitman to be on the same level as those but better

Avatar image for honeycomb06

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think that thief, The Order, The Division and Watch dog could be the game of year......Hitman could be too but ion think square enix put in enough effort to do so

Avatar image for Hurvl

@honeycomb06@Flonne_N_EtnaI think it'd be better if someone, perhaps you, just made a Saint's Row mod involving Hitman. Hitman is one of the few stealth franchises that hasn't gone all-action yet. I fear that the new Thief game might not be what the other games offered, but that remains to be seen.

Avatar image for honeycomb06

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> yes just yes man hitman feel too small to me i like to explore and **** around alot and hitman would be the perfect game

Avatar image for honeycomb06

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> it's a good idea for a new IP but i thank the hitman formula is growing stale and i think square enix need to take the hitman series in a new dirrection

Avatar image for Navardo95

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> No that would be taking the dung on the Hitman franchise..rather make a new I.P with those ideas.

Avatar image for honeycomb06

I want a new Dead to Rights or Getaway game on next gen and I hope the bring back true crimes and not that water down sleeping dogs bullshit

Avatar image for Navardo95

While Absolution was a good game...it had some crushingly bad design choices, the fact that they eliminated the map and broke down the levels into parts was extremely disappointing...true hitman fans know that map was one of the most important elements in the previous games if you wanted to intelligently and silently murder your target as the levels were sprawling and you needed to strategize and boy wasn't it just a fantastic formula..

I don't have much hopes for the next one though as I've read an interview with the director a long time back and he mentioned that the stealth element in Absolution was fine but he found the action to be disappointing...what does this tell you?

Avatar image for max-hit

Maybe this stops them from urinating all over my favorite gaming franchise.

Avatar image for joshphillips

I think sites just come up with stories to prod info out of the developers. This really seems like a case of that. There have been tons of false statements made by sites recently about a game being worked on or canceled then the devs show up to denounce. Genius really, but could end badly for a site if they don't watch their butts.

Avatar image for Hurvl

<< LINK REMOVED >>Companies have already a method for dealing with that and it's called "No comments" or the longer version "we don't comment on speculations or rumours". Silence the rumour makers with silence, that's the companies' trick and it often works.

Avatar image for CrouchingWeasel

Get rid of that fucking instinct & bring back the good old map, seriously.

Avatar image for dragonkantus4

i am tired of playing with that bald guy really

Avatar image for Martyr77

<< LINK REMOVED >> I am tired of playing with that Belmont guy really.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

<< LINK REMOVED >>I'm tired of playing as that Link guy

Avatar image for deactivated-5cd08b1605da1

<< LINK REMOVED >>You're tired of playing with the most badass character ever embracing gaming? Oh, an Anime fan... your opinion is invalid

Avatar image for dragonkantus4

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> it is from castlevania

Avatar image for dragonkantus4

@Vatusus @dragonkantus4 that is not from anime but i dont think you have the brain to know that....and this is ironic because of that okami avatar you have

Avatar image for Ayzed

Absolution was good but there were things I didn't like about it, like the instinct meter..
if I'm dressed as a cop, I should be able to just walk by all the other cops.

Some of the levels were boring too, I like levels like the mental hospital and the big Christmas party in that house in the mountains in Contracts.

Avatar image for Navardo95

<< LINK REMOVED >> "the big Christmas party in that house in the mountains in Contracts."

You mean,Blood Money?

Avatar image for Ayzed

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I did mean blood money lol, played them both so long ago it's hard to remember what missions are on what game.

Avatar image for coaltango

well this series could use a reboot with the next gen graphics

Avatar image for chuckles471

<< LINK REMOVED >> Doesn't need a reboot. The main stories have always been the weak points of the series, it's the individual hits have always been the stronger elements.

If they make a reboot they will have to through more origin and the agency story missions, and less one off contracted hits.

Avatar image for PlusFour

Well thank god they're still working on mobile development, almost broke into a very gentle sweat there.

Avatar image for Lawdog1521

The last one sucked, so... meh.

Avatar image for hikaruai

update: story is fake

Avatar image for PlatinumPaladin

Well, at least that's all sorted then. :-)
