Square Enix Montreal's next-gen Hitman reportedly canceled, publisher responds [UPDATE]

Publisher provides statement clarifying the matter.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a Square Enix representative provided a statement to GameSpot on the matter.

"There's a bit of confusion around the Hitman projects currently in development at Square Enix-owned studios and so we wanted to take the time to clarify what each studio is working on to clear up some of this confusion. Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise," the representative said. "We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year."

The original story is below.

Square Enix Montreal's next-generation Hitman game has been canceled, according to the LinkedIn profile of a senior game designer at the studio. This project was originally announced as part of the outfit's inception in November 2012, though no details about it ever came to light.

Videogamer, which spotted the LinkedIn page, also found that another developer's resume claims Square Enix Montreal is working on a new Hitman game for iOS and Android. We have reached out to Square Enix for comment, but haven't heard back at press time.

Hitman fans needn't take the news as all bad, however, as another "AAA" Hitman game remains in development at series creator IO Interactive. This game was in pre-production as of June 2012 and its current development status is unknown.

The most recent core Hitman game was November 2012's Hitman: Absolution. For more on that game, check out GameSpot's review.

I had a feeling this was nonsense when Videogamer first reported on it. Using LinkedIn as a "source". Sheesh. Game journalism has really taken a dive over the last few years. Its all about being first instead of being accurate.

Saying Blood Money is better than Absolution is like saying a diamond is better than... basically another diamond that you just don't like the look of. They're both awesome.

Avatar image for StHapns247

So a LinkedIn profile wasn't hardcore, iron-clad proof?

Next time just wait until Kotaku reports it first.

I hope IO makes Hitman 6 more like Blood Money as opposed to Absolution. I liked Absolution, but Hitman should stay more like Blood Money. I prefer the classic "you're a hitman who receives a contract from your employer...then you carry out the mission the way you want."

Avatar image for corrus

I am really hope they make more Hitman games Hitman Absolution is awesome game i like very much the fighting style in it

Avatar image for demonkingx5

So i can assume that this game will take advantage of the FX 83xx series of CPU's since the last game did pretty good with AMD built PC's

Avatar image for DiverseGamer

Hitman: Absolution is an amazing game even if it's different from the originals.

Avatar image for doraemonllh1989

I stopped playing absolutio.its just not that good

Avatar image for AuronAXE

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's your subjective opinion. I think they ruined the series, and if you ignore the previous titles it's still not that good compared to most games out today. A lot of levels plain suck.

But that's also my subjective opinion.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Let me guess, you also hated DmC?

So in other words, your article was full of crap again Mackuch?

I hope the next Hitman game has unlockable weapons, upgrades, and load outs for single player this time. And I hope there is no slow motion effect. Absolution was good, but the combat(though great) felt watered down and cheap with the slow mo effect for every head shot, and the lack of load outs in single player kept it from being the ultimate hitman game.

Avatar image for Ranma_X_basic

Funny how Square-Enix said that both Tomb raider and Hitman Absolution didn't meet sales expectations but were proven wrong and both games did surprisingly well.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

"Don't worry, no matter what Hitman game we eventually make and how much it sells, we'll call it a failure and shovel all the money it made into Final Fantasy 14, further dooming our company!"

Avatar image for godfather830

Ok, great.. so the mobile version was cancelled? good riddance

Avatar image for HonorOfGod

Meh What ever sqeenix you're still on crack.

Avatar image for catsimboy

I bet the mobile one will be just great. When you make a hit little bundles of cash will pop out for you to tap on and when you run out of Hitman energy you can wait hours for it to regen or pay real money to get more.

<< LINK REMOVED >> mobile hitman? why not mobile WOW.................

Avatar image for jer_1

Can't say i'm very excited considering all the hand-holding the last one did. Maybe the next one will just play itself for me so I don't "get confused on what buttons to press" and i just sleep on the couch while playing on console.

Avatar image for nl_skipper

Well, happy to hear there's still another Hitman in development, and it's still in the hands of IO Interactive! Just bring back the open-ended levels we love and all is well.

Avatar image for pupp3t_mast3r

<< LINK REMOVED >> And the hideout levels in between each mission so you can actually choose your loadout and find out briefings about each level!!

Avatar image for nl_skipper

@pupp3t_mast3r OMG YES! One of my favourite parts of the past Hitman games was collecting all the weapons and seeing them neatly arranged in my safe house (I likely have OCD?). The whole Hitman style of getting a briefing and photo of your hit needs to return as well.

Avatar image for meatz666

keep Hitman in its original platform, PC. i dont mind about that.

Avatar image for divinejester

Good. Square Enix needs to stop wasting money trying to prove the abysmal buying of Eidos was a good idea, and start salvaging the JRPG franchises that made them what they are. FF and Dragon Quest are in the worst shape they have ever been, and the only decent new idea they came up with, Bravely Default, was really just a FF game anyway.

Avatar image for linkftw12

<< LINK REMOVED >> You have like over 200 final fantasies. Take a break from that stuff and focus on a better game like hitman.

Avatar image for pupp3t_mast3r

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not much you can say about a company that's forgotten where they started. I wish they at least sold off the FF IP to a company that could do the franchise justice.

Avatar image for MikeManiac61

Bring back Jesper Kyd for the game's soundtrack!!

Avatar image for wizardboyus

if they took the good parts of absolution (like the focus mechanics) and blended them w/ blood money's large open levels, they'd have a real hit on their hands

Avatar image for emperiox

<< LINK REMOVED >> Blood Money had a better story though...I especially loved the dark cutscenes.

Avatar image for m_bd89

<< LINK REMOVED >>The focus mechanic is absolutely the worst thing they added to the game. It single-handedly turned a game about hiding in plain sight, and basically solving a puzzle, to a Splinter Cell clone about taking cover and and saving up focus. It pretty much destroyed the core of what made the previous Hitman games.

Avatar image for Dredcrumb9

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> you can play without using the focus system, you can turn it off in options. The only bad thing about Absolution is the slow mo effect that happens for head shots(cant be turned off in options), and no weapon unlocks/loadouts in single player.

Avatar image for Noclippin

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yep. Absolution sucked for this very reason.

Avatar image for m_bd89

<< LINK REMOVED >>It's really when I played on purist that I noticed how much that mechanic ruined the game. Even though, you can't see through walls and all that crap, you still can't hide in plain sight because no matter what disguise you're wearing enemies will always get suspicious, unless you use focus. And since on higher difficulties you have so little of it, you end up spending all of your time moving from cover to cover in a mostly linear fashion or walking around while constantly doing these ridiculous looking 360s to avoid detection, which is not at all what Hitman games are about. And which is why when they say you can turn all that stuff off it's bullshit, because they've obviously built the game around focus, and by doing so they pretty much destroyed the soul of the franchise. And finally for a game called Hitman, about a cloned psychopathic hitman whose only purpose is to do hitman things i.e assassinate people, there weren't that many actual assassination missions in this game, contrary to its predecessors. And that stupid QTE wrestling match doesn't count as one.

Avatar image for CrouchingWeasel

No more map, no more open ended levels, no more getting hits from an employer, no more loadouts...... should I continue or do you get the picture?

Avatar image for Dredcrumb9

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> you could turn the x ray/focus/hand holding crap, off in Absolution. You are not stating any real reasons why absolution sucked.

Avatar image for tomservo51

<< LINK REMOVED >> they'd have a real hit man.

Avatar image for MikeManiac61

Absolution felt like it held my hand too much, disguise system was awful, each section had a load time unlike Blood Money when there was no loading sections at all, some of the assassinations in the game didn't make any sense to me at all. I hope they do better with the next installment Contracts and Blood Money were my favorite.

Avatar image for crix01

<< LINK REMOVED >> You should have played it on "purist". And the disguise system on previous games was hand holding, like those magical suits that gets you everywhere.

Avatar image for Fandango_Letho

I like how the update negates the whole article. Just delete it, Eddie.

Avatar image for michalmis

<< LINK REMOVED >>Hes actualy smart... write something complietely wrong, then pretty much force the affected parties to answer to clear up the confusion, thus getting a comment from them where otherwise there would be none.

Avatar image for DarkSaber2k

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Too bad they only bother to respond to his bullshit like 1% of the time, the other 99% of the time we just get an article full of shit.

Avatar image for ziproy

Just keep 47 and I'll still love the series. I must agree with the rest of the comments; make the levels more like the open playgrounds of Blood Money.

I want the option to dress up like a clown and go through an FBI safe-house with a butcher knife again :p

Avatar image for uncha1n3d

Avatar image for Mrod1212

I still think Blood Money is the best, but I enjoyed Absolution very much. Looking forward to another Hitman game.

Avatar image for Moegitto

Make it like Blood Money and you have a sale, make it like Absolution and I'll abandon the series.

Avatar image for roman4545

<< LINK REMOVED >> make it like Absolution and I'll abandon the series.

ya... sure.. you abandon... we dont... especially I.. but nice way to express yourself.
