Square Enix Doesn't Know How Many Games Final Fantasy 7 Remake Will Span

We won't be done waiting for Final Fantasy VII when March rolls around.

Final Fantasy VII Remake has a release date--March 3, 2020--but that game won't be the complete story of Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, Aerith, and Sephiroth. Square Enix confirmed during E3 2019 that what releases in 2020 will only cover the first part of the 1997 original's tale, with more episodes coming later.

That messaging got a bit confused when Square Enix also announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake will cover two Blu-ray discs. Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase, who directed the original game, explained that there's so much content in this first episode, it'll cover those two discs. And he doesn't know how many episodes it'll take to complete the story.

Now Playing: Why Final Fantasy 7 Remake Has Us More Excited Than Ever | E3 2019

"We can't reveal that many details about this, but just to give you a bit of background on it, before we actually started working on this, we knew obviously it was going to be a large amount of content," Kitase said through a translator during a preview session with journalists. "To do the whole story was going to be huge. And then when we actually did start planning out the plot for the first game, it hit us again that this is going to be a huge amount of content.

"At that point, we decided we're going to focus this game on Midgar and what happened in Midgar," he continued. "And unfortunately, we can't say anything more about the future games after that, because we don't know ourselves, really. We really are still fleshing out that process and fleshing out what we're going to do for the second game in the project, and what kind of story is going to be in that, so we really can't tell you."

Kitase also said he wasn't sure how much the work already done on the game would speed up development of future Final Fantasy VII episodes. While a lot of work with characters and the underlying technology of the game is complete, future episodes will take place in settings beyond Midgar, which are going to take a lot of time to create in their own right.

All of that suggests that while fans have been waiting a long time for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, they won't be finished waiting when March 3 rolls around. The question of how huge and sprawling Square Enix's return to Final Fantasy VII will eventually be is one that likely won't be answered for some time either.

As long as they don't try to create a new engine for every new addition it shouldn't take too long for the other games to come out (being very hopeful here.) I'm guessing it will still be 3 games as very few if any games has made more than 3 games that directly relate to each other.

My bigger concern is how they are going to transfer the skills, levels, items, etc. to the next game. I hate the feeling of having to start all over for each iteration. Especially since a lot of the materia was made to level up between discs. Many of the spells wouldn't get to the 3rd level until into disc 2. The E-skill was carried through the whole game.

They don't KNOW? How inept are you people? Have you planned anything out, or are you just going to see how many times you can get people to pay full price for the same game? Pathetic.

@Thanatos2k: It might also be an attempt to curb their reputation for announcing things way too damn early, although this was a bad time to start doing that. Nobody believes them, plus they already said a while ago that it would be much easier to develop the other episodes once the foundation is in place.

Back in the day, it took about 5-6 hours to get out of Midgar. FFVII as a whole was about a 60 hour game. So, episode 1 will essentially be 10% of the main over arching story. Of course, Remake part 1 will not simply be a 6 hour game. I'm sure theye going to add a bunch of additional Avalanche content to, you know, actually make you care about Jesse, Biggs, and Wedge. They will also probably allow you to go to the other sectors of Midgar beyond just Sector 7 and 5.

Still, how do you make 6 hours of content stretch out into a stand-alone $60 AAA title? There's gonna be a lot of padding and a lot of open-world mechanics they likely throw into this. Does this mean FFVII Remake will be a 10(ish) part series? If so, damn, I guess we'll be finishing it on PS7...

@Sarymbo: I have a weird, sneaking feeling that a lot of the story has been rewritten and moved to Midgar. If you really think about it, a lot of what happens throughout FF7 is buoyed by the world exploration. Many story beats didn't really need to happen outside Midgar. Heck, wasn't Vincent supposed to join much earlier?

@Sarymbo: People are going to be like "Hey where's Sephiroth? Isn't he in this game?" and he'll show up for the last five minutes of the game.

This is going to take at least another 10 years, and that's being optimistic. They themselves don't know how long it will take since they don't know how many parts it will be.

Not much of the world they created will be useable in future installments since the rest of the world will need to be created for the first time.

I wish Final Fantasy would just hurry up and die. It's a scourge in the current form that it's in.

They want to see how well the game sells first before they decide how long to drag it out.

Yeah, I know. Pessimistic, but Squeenix has been doing their best EA impression of late, so I don't know what to tell you.

@Barighm: The first one will sell well. Then they will get the bright idea of, why don't we milk this into 10 installments and get $600 out of you?

@lostn: Well, yeah, but they can't say that. :P

But I don't think it's that big a given the game will sell all that well. Don't forget, we're coming off of three straight FF disasters and a lot of bad PR with their staff calling FF fans a disease and directors who hate the FF series. I think there are enough people taking the "wait and see" approach to blunt the sales rush a bit.

@Barighm: The past few games have been critical disasters but they've sold well enough that the bean counters at SE will see it as a big success and go full steam ahead on what they did in the past.

FF7 Remake will sell better than XV which they were already very happy with the sales for, because 7 has the nostalgia factor of having the biggest sales and fanbase in the series.

I hope the PC version is only released when this game is completely complete. With many things better than the PS4 version, not only the graphics.

@jamesbr27: PS4 will only be for the first episode. After that it will be PS5 and then PS6, with Xbox getting the game a year later.

@uchihasilver: The first part is just Midgar. The rest of the world is bigger than Midgar and hasn't been built yet. So it will take a long time.

And it will likely be on next gen consoles which means the very few assets from part 1 they could bring over (character models and spells) would need to be revamped to look better.

@lostn: It could be done if the game is already being developed with the anticipation of the PS5. It is rumored to be backwards-compatible with all PS4 games, so reusing assets shouldn't be as hard. Also taking advantage of nVidia's DLSS or AMD's Radeon Image Sharpening to auto upres without replacing would help save time. If it was PS3 to PS4 it would be much harder since they would have to deal with different architectures. Now, though, all the consoles are just custom PC's using AMD hardware. All the consoles doing this must save all developers a lot of time when they multi-platform games.

I'm hoping a modest 2-2 1/2 years for the other iterations. Other companies have been able to do ambitious games like this, so it is possible.

@uchihasilver: KH3 & FFXV took I idk, forever to come out? FFXV took near 10 years dev time even though they already nailed the vision of the game back in Sony E3 presentation in ps3 days.

@sakaixx: Same. Back in the SNES and PS1 days, SQUARE was cranking out a top tier game every 1-2 years. Now Square mostly just publishes 3rd party games and they average only 1-2 in-house games per console generation. Hopefully FF7 remake is not a 10 year+ ordeal.

Sooo... Does the physical copy at least come with a voucher for all the episodes, or do they honestly expect people to pay $60+ for a mere portion of the game? Because if not, then this is quite possibly the biggest ripoff in gaming history!

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Not really. The Order 1886 was $60 for a 5 hour game. As long as FF7-1 is 10-20 hours long, you are not being ripped off in terms of dollars per hour.

Actually the battle systems great, infact it's better then before, it's dynamic final fantasy atb system, why you ask because you can map key skills and powers for fast game play, or play in manual mode where each hit is dynamic but you end up with slow motion allowing you to see the beautiful dust, smoke sparks and explosions while delivering those awesome cute scenes we have always liked.

To be honest was not sure how they would incorporate such feature especially when dealing with summons.

So far I'm impressed, especially when it will be on two disks.

I can see it now, midgar will be one huge loading screen from start to finish right up to when you exit midgar.

Episode 2 will have you embarking on your adventures towards chocobo ranch (probably right up to where you encounter the snow board stage, or maybe sephiroph goes bat shiwizzle crazy.

Being episode 3 departing from the destroyed village.

Do remember all, final fantasy 7 came on almost 5 disks, so it's fair to announce two disks for episode 1.

@lorddaggeroff: FF7 originally came on three discs, not "almost five", and a lot of that was redundant data due to multiple discs being required because of the various FMVs specific to each disc. That also has no bearing on the modern remake's size either. Modern game texture sizes far outstrip those of older game data sizes. It could be that the two discs is either chock full of content, or the bulk of it is assets, like what happened with FF15's 4k texture pack.

We'll just have to wait and see when it comes out.

@squishytia: What annoys me more is why final fantasy 15 and dlc was not on disk ???????????

That infuriated me especially when I waited way past the full development cycle and beta crap for it only to be told it would be a dlc download.

So angry at you tabata.

Like someone said, Midgar ia only 25% of the whole story, and it took them 5 years to finish (or more than that) i cant think how the hell they are going to do this specially with new consoles starting to come out next year! I would hate the first episode to be current gen and the rest future gen, wont do justice but oh well, it looks good at least

@remagine31: It's not 25%. It's about 15%.

Took me about 8 hours to finish Midgar. The whole game including side quests was about 60 hours. Take away the side quests and you're looking at 40-45 hours, maybe 50 if you're slow.
