Square Enix has cancelled the four Starwing Paradox tournaments scheduled this weekend as a precaution after several death threats were sent to the mecha arcade game's management team.

In an official Square Enix statement, the company says it has reported the threats and is cooperating fully with police. As a precautionary measure, tournaments for both this weekend and next weekend in Tokyo, Yokohama, Fukuoka, and Nagora have all been cancelled. Square Enix has apologised to those looking forward to the events.

This is just the latest in a series of threats against Square Enix in 2019. Earlier this month a man was arrested by Tokyo police after threatening the company with an arson attack, stating that he would repeat the terrible Kyoto Animation tragedy. This followed another incident in March when a man was arrested after threatening to kill Square Enix staff because he spent over 200,000 yen ($1,794 / £1,500) attempting to unlock a specific item in a gacha game (the video game equivalent of capsule toys).

Meanwhile, around 30 emails were sent to Square Enix last September with the word "kill" written in Japanese. Authorities are currently investigating if there is any connection between this and the other death threats the studio has faced.

How about this for a change, just STOP BUYING their garbage DLC, LOOTS & the likes and their companies will be dead for sure. You show them by keeping your wallets in your pocket.

LOL Japanese men love trolling any method that gets them results, especially based on fear and intimidation, because they are so passive in general. These methods are popular right now because they seem so aggressive, but originate from anything but. What someone with a mental illness would do should never be assumed with everyone\anyone else. theyd love for you to think "that crazy guy thinks just like me, dont make me come get you". Yeah, no credit today, try again tomorrow. Its effective though, as they know that nationalist companies run by mostly Japanese men will, hey, respond passively! Id love an eastern viewpoint, because i really believe their law enforcement is really just having a blast meeting quota.

I keep thinking we'll finally get to the point where we look back with horrible embarrassment on the era when anonymous juvenile cowards got so much airtime. Still a ways to go, clearly.

@megagood2345:

Um.. There never was a time where there weren't people of all types like that and there likely never will be a time like that. By the point all of these ones grow up, a whole new gen will take their place. And given the trend of increased levels of victimization complex and self entitlement among the up and coming... I'd say we are in for quite a show.

Not like you people sending the death threats are actually going to do shit anyways? Just keep talking shit behind the safety of your phone/ computer screen. Can’t wait til someone gets your address and shows up on your door step and tells you “come on motherfucker I’m right here! Do it!!!”

@kstaggs87: Yes, that's the answer for sure. Let's poke and antagonize the unstable people, and show up on their doorsteps to instigate a confrontation.

Do people even think before they speak any more?

And you're really going to try that nonsense after some unhinged crazy person actually just DID follow through on his threat and burned down an animation studio killing dozens?

@Thanatos2k: I encourage you to read the comment again and really think about what I said and then come back to me and hopefully have a better understanding of it. Because it seems like you just read a couple of trigger words and then started typing away not fully grasping what I was trying to say in the first place.

@aross2004: quick question...can you read correctly? Like, can you comprehend sentence structure and sarcasm very well? Because what it seems like is you skimmed over my original comment and saw the words “motherfucker” and “show up at your doorstep” and I guess determined that I said something along the lines of “anyone who death threats me I’m gonna get their address and show up at their house and say COME AT ME MOTHERFUCKER!!!”

Let me break it down for you.

People who make death threats, 95% of the time are just keyboard warriors who really aren’t gonna do shit. They’re trolls, mentally unstable children who aren’t getting their way who have parents that didn’t raise them correctly.

Then I stated, one day they are going to “death threat” the wrong individual and that person is going to track them down, show up at their house and see if they will act upon what they said they were gonna do. NOT ME!!! But someone else. I was speaking in general.

Do you understand now? If not, I encourage you to read the original comment again, and then re read this, correlate the two and try to maybe comprehend what I was trying to say. It helps if you actually try to read and understand first before you jump on the “OH YOU’RE CRAZY HURRDURR” bandwagon. It builds character.

Could people just...not? I mean...for ****'s sake, just take a step back and reevaluate your priorities.

I dislike microtransactions actively "ruining" games, but I would waste the time or the effort to send a death threat to someone that likely had no control over the decision (developers rarely have a say in matters of monetization, from what I hear).

Stop giving uninformed fools more ammunition to demonize us. The vast majority of us gamers are a reasonable bunch, but this death threat nonsense just makes us an easy target for people looking for a scapegoat.

@Yomigaeru:

And the worst part is that this kind of thing happens with literally everything. It's just that due to certain events and outside nitwits/ideologues, with much too large/loud of an undeserved voice in the fandom and industry, there is now a hyper focused narrative out there being pushed that targets gaming/gamers exclusively.

@Ragnarok1051: Bullcrap. These companies deliberately try to appeal to people with inhibition and gambling issues to make money off of them. It's not even a secret that gacha games are designed around the 0.1% of ultra spenders. Are death threats acceptable? No. But we shouldn't be quick to defend the people who target the susceptible to make money.

@Barighm: In what world do you live in that you can classify a person who knowingly contributes to a game that will target vulnerable people to make bad financial decisions as "innocent"? You can't kick the responsibility for these things upstairs. You can't be the good guy when it's your job to be conductive to a system of exploitation and abuse.

@megagood2345: I said exactly that death threats aren't the way to go about it but you have to look at the context that the threat was issued under: being targeted by unscrupulous economic practices. It's like casinos offering free chips to addicts or a bar giving people drinks to break their sobriety. Nobody is guilt-free in this situation and you shouldn't let go of the root cause of the problem just because someone threw out a threat of violence. You shut the threat down and continue addressing the problem.

@vakiva: Did you seriously just justify hatred and abuse of the common work force? WTF is wrong with you? Are you really so dense as to believe that people show up to work saying to themselves "Gee, how can I exploit people today"? Do you think that's the role they wanted when they first took the job? You know a bad apple in leadership can move to any other company, right? Do you actually think everyone immediately becomes evil little imps the moment some jerk shows up and changes a corporation's policy to something shady? Do you really think it's so easy to look your family in the eyes and say "Sorry, guys, but due to my principles we can no longer afford food and shelter for about a year until I find another job...which will probably be even longer because this will look very bad on my resume"? And what about personal responsibility? At one point do we question the people who make all of this possible in the first place?

What world do YOU live in? It sure as hell ain't the real one.

@Barighm: A world where companies abuse people and their employees are typically knowingly conductive to the system of exploitation. A world where Google employees raised protests and quit when they realized they were being used to contribute to Chinese censorship and American military AI contracts. I live in a world where people should have morals and shouldn't pass the guilt of doing evil up the chain of command. Truly evil people are rare but the people who enable them seem to be a dime-a-dozen these days.
