Universal Interactive has announced that it will be releasing the latest entry in the Spyro the Dragon franchise, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, on the GameCube later this year. The game is being developed by Venice, California-based developer Equinoxe, the same studio currently working on the PlayStation 2 version. The game is the sequel to Spyro: Year of the Dragon, which was released two years ago for the original PlayStation.

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly picks up shortly after the conclusion of the PlayStation game. The source of all dragon magic has been stolen by Spyro's nemesis, Ripto, following the Year of the Dragon festival. Spyro sets out, along with Sparx, Hunter, and Bianca, to save the dragon magic and restore order to the Dragon Realm. The game will enhance Spyro's existing set of abilities with new additions such as electric, ice, and bubble breath. At the moment it appears the GameCube version of Spyro will contain identical content to the PlayStation 2 game and will offer 12 levels for players to explore, ranging from the standard grassy areas to snowy hilltops and jungles with lava flows.

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly is currently slated to ship in the fourth quarter of this year for the GameCube.
