Spike TV's 2006 game awards detailed

Network for men brings Samuel L. Jackson back for another year of hosting; voting now open in more than two dozen categories.

While the G4 cable television network has gradually moved away from its original game-centric focus and reduced the spectacle of its annual G-phoria gaming award show, another cable gaming awards program is apparently staying the course when it comes to glitz and glamour.

Spike TV's official Web site for its 2006 Video Game Awards has opened up for voting, and on it the Viacom-owned network for men confirms that last year's master of ceremonies, Samuel L. Jackson (Snakes on a Plane, The Red Violin), will once again host the event. However, whether the still-unannounced lineup of presenters and performers can measure up to last year's show--which featured the likes of Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Charlize Thereon, and Keifer Sutherland--remains to be seen.

As far as the actual game awards, Spike TV will be doling out honors in 28 categories, from Game of the Year to Cyber Vixen of the Year. While gamers can vote for their favorite nominees online, it's unclear exactly how much the vote matters. According to the site, "winners of all categories except Critic's Choice are determined in part by viewer voting." (Emphasis added.)

To be eligible for the Critic's Choice category, a game's release date must fall between November 8, 2005, and December 24, 2006. For all other categories, the range is December 1, 2005, to November 7, 2006.

Spike TV will air the 2006 Video Game Awards Wednesday, December 13, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. To vote on the nominees for 27 of the 28 categories, go to the official 2006 VGA Web site.

Chances are everything made by EA is going to win unless there's a true standout such as God of War was last year.

Spike TV VG awards.... Paid off, Marketing BS... Crap like that makes me mad, because it gives crappy games a good rep... and people who buy into it end up getting ripped off. C'mon Spike, take off the makeup and get real!

I voted and the only one I would like to mention is the Wii for the award for breakthrough technology. I mean lets all be honest here, which do you consider to be more breakthrough, new graphics, which should be a given as each generation of consoles are released; or a completely new way to play games. My money is on the Wii and I sincerely hope Nintendo gets that award, even if it really doesn't mean anything.

I use to hate the Spike TV's VG awards. But now that G4 is slowly dissapating from being a network videogame channel to a Spike TV copycat, I guess I'll watch the Spike award show from this point on.

When I saw Vice City get Best Soundtrack over Katamari Damacy, that's when I decided that these award shows were stupid and bias. And lets not forget King Kong's raid. That was so stupid. Why do they keep these award shows? They're pointless!

Nothing like asking people to vote on games and systems that haven't been released yet. Certainly these are credible awards and not a giant hype machine! Come on folks, this crap doesn't go away until you stop watching.

Avatar image for swedishc

I went to that show last year. Most of the games that were up for awards either hadn’t been released yet, or had terrible reviews. There needs to be a real video game award show that doesn't receive money from publishers for awards.

Once again an actor who really doesn't look like he plays games, surrounded by other actors who don't play games or have a real connection to games. Anyone who believes this show means anything needs to get their head checked.

50 Cent: Bulletproof was up for game of the year last year on Spike's 2005 show. The game was given terrible reviews by everyone. Coincidently, 50 Cent performed at the awards show. Their awards can be bought. Spike's award show is completely bogus!

Avatar image for cherrybomb257

I should add, Madden 07 from EA or any of its "sports" franchises could be added to the list of games. Actually, pretty much anything from EA. Remember you can't spell "Mass Marketing" without an E and an A.

Avatar image for cherrybomb257

Nah, the Oscars at least pretend to choose movies that don't suck. Spike simply chooses as many mass-market games as possible to shill in hopes they'll sell more units. Worst of all it's a thinly vailed excuse at best as an "Awards Show." Most Oscar nominations/winners I tend to agree with. Not so with the Spike TV Video Game Awards, where most good games don't even get mentioned unless they have the words "Halo", "Final", or "Theft" somewhere in the name.

Avatar image for gonzales1

The Spike TV 2006 Game Awards are a joke. I watched the first one and they took it as a joke and not seriously. Games should be looked at as an art not just for some stereotypical "men's" needs. I mean Cyber Vixen of the year? What the Hell? They should make a true Video Game Awards show that's Oscar-esque. Just take out all of the celebrities and put in the actual directors and producers like Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima along with their staff and team along with other companies.
