Spielberg's The BFG Struggles at Box Office - Report

"It will rank as one of the biggest flops of the summer and of Spielberg's career."

Disney's Finding Dory was the No. 1 film at the US box office this weekend, beating out newcomers such as The Legend of Tarzan and Steven Spielberg's The BFG.

Variety, which has the box office figures, reports that Finding Dory took in $41.9 million over the weekend, bringing its new US total to $372.2 million. After Monday's figures are counted (it's a US holiday), the film could rake in $50.5 million for the four-day weekend.

The site also reports that Finding Dory is on pace to topple Toy Story 3 ($415 million) to become Pixar's highest-grossing US film ever.

The Legend of Tarzan brought in $38.1 million, landing at the No. 2 position for the weekend. It could end up making $4 million for the four-day holiday weekend, which would be around $10 million more than analysts predicted, Variety said.

In the No. 4 position for this weekend was Disney's The BFG. Variety called it "the weekend's biggest disaster" and one that, despite pretty OK reviews, was "overshadowed by" Finding Dory. It "collapsed" at the box office, the report said, bringing in $19.6 million for the three-day weekend and is on pace for $23.6 million for the four-day holiday weekend. The film had a reported $140 million budget

"It will rank as one of the biggest flops of the summer and of Spielberg's career, raising questions about his drawing power after a decade spent making historical dramas such as Lincoln that are geared at older crowds," Variety said.

The BFG came in behind The Purge: Election Year, the weekend's No. 3 movie, which made $30.9 million Friday-Sunday and could generate $34 million when Monday's numbers come in.

Head to Variety for a full breakdown and analysis of this weekend's box office results.

I know this is an old tale, but as a long time Doom player (if not already evident by my profile pic :P) I swear I can never take this movie's name seriously...

I've read many of Roald Dahl's books when I was a kid and this was the poorest choice to make a film adaptation for.

Who was the idiot in the Disney marketing board that thought releasing a major film within a couple of weeks of a film that was projected the break the box office was a good idea?

It's a fantastic book but this day and age I doubt it would hold the attention of kids just wanting an animated slice of fun. I did a book report on this when I was 8 in 1987 heh.

Steven Spielberg's name does not hold the same drawing power as he once did back in the 90s. Nowadays, whenever I see a new movie directed or produced by Steven Spielberg, I just go meh. He should probably take a page from his old buddy George Lucas and call it quits.

@isildor: Yeah not the brightest idea especially against Finding Dory. This should of been released more in early August after Dory and Life of Pets but before Pete's Dragon. Makes it a new kids film every two weeks. Still though that a lot and three of them are Disney Film. Seems to me they are killing their own productions this summer. Remember Alice Through the Looking Glass?

That's still a very good gross but the issue is, Spielberg's name doesn't hold the weight it once did and the BFG already has a classic animation which parents can buy for the kids for a lot cheaper than a cinema ticket. The older audience, especially someone like me (mid 20s) just wouldn't go watch it.

How could they not see this coming? It's about an old creepy animated giant. Who is the target audience? Kids don't want to go see some creepy old dude running around grabbing kids out of beds. Doesn't matter if he's a giant. Or friendly.

The name is just confusing because we ALL know what BFG stands for. And they went up against Finding Dory.

Duh.

There's been virtually no marketing for this film. Also, who is it for? People my age (late 30's) will remember the book and original animated film, and probably also remember how completely terrifying it is, and will therefore not want to take their own kids to see it!

I'm not surprised honestly. The trailer doesn't make the movie look very interesting to be honest. So I don't really want to see it. And I remember liking the book. It may just not translate to a very interesting film.

Spielberg is very out of touch, with film going reality, nowadays.

A film about giant creepy looking geezers, really? Who would believe that kids would wanna watch this?

His last film "Bridge of Spies" was already extremely dated, and was literally saved by Tom Hank's charisma. The whole film I was wondering why I was supposed to care for the geezered out Russian spy. I literally couldn't less if the geezer died or not, it Tom Hanks alone that made the film watchable.

This dude needs to really stop making big budget films. If he insists on making films about geezers, at least make them with smaller budgets.

@kazeswen: Or maybe, just maybe, you are to young for his style. Just maybe...

Spielberg is doing everything just right, as usual. Besides, he is a DIRECTOR.

@kazeswen: 165 million dollar's worth with 40million budget as well as the vast majority enjoying this film disagree with you after watching Bridge of Spies

@kazeswen: Why would kids want to watch a creepy guy wearing latex and doing somersaults while shoving his crotch in their face? I have no idea, but they all seem to watch that Lazy Town sh*t.
