Spider-Man's Venom Spinoff Will Star Tom Hardy

Hardy to play Eddie Brock.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Sony was moving ahead with its Spider-Man spinoff focusing on the alien parasite Venom. It has now been announced that the movie will star Tom Hardy.

The studio confirmed that Hardy will play Eddie Brock in the film, which is set to hit theaters in October 2018 and begins shooting this fall. In Marvel's comic books, Brock is a photographer and rival to Peter Parker, who becomes a host for the parasite and sets about to destroy him.

Sony announced Hardy's involvement with a photo of the actor wearing a Venom T-shirt:

This isn't the first time that Hardy has played a villainous role in a superhero movie--in 2012 he portrayed Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. He will reunite with Nolan this summer in the World War 2 adventure Dunkirk.

Venom will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, who previously helmed the horror comedy Zombieland. It is unknown if there will be any connection between Venom and this year's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sony holds the movie rights to Spider-Man and associated characters, and Marvel had to strike a deal with it to allow Spidey to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Homecoming and last year's Captain America: Civil War.

Plans for a Venom movie actually predate the Marvel deal, and the film was originally intended to be part of the ongoing Spider-Man franchise that starred Andrew Garfield. That series ended after just two movies. Venom previously appeared in 2007's Spider-Man 3, in which Eddie Brock was played by Topher Grace.

So he's played Bane and is going to play Venom... What's next? Snakebite?

Jeez, Tom Hardy really is in everything these days. But I guess I like him, so I guess it's okay.

Marvel only was interested in Spider-Man for MCU deal. This is Sony only and word is it doesn't connect to MCU or Spider-Man. But if Marvel and Sony don't extend their original deal (past Avengers 4 and Spider-Man 2), they may blend Spider-Man back into their other Sony Marvel projects like Venom, Black Cat/Silver Sable and Sinister Six. It all depends how these solo movies perform for Sony.

Ummm I bet good money it will be part of the MCU. It makes zero sense to make a venom movie that isn't part of the MCU now. Not to mention to the casual person that would just be needlessly confusing. Venom is probably the most recognizable spider-man villain and spidey is in the MCU now. I know venom becomes a good guy in the comics but he's a prolific and well known villain first and foremost to everyone not into comics. It would just be bizarre.

Then again this is Sony and I wouldn't put it past them.

I don't really have much interest in non-MCU movies, so I probably won't see it.

în Spiderman 3 we had venoms origins, now we can have a cool story, where he is turning from villain to hero, maybe Carnage will appear, take Spiderman off the table (injure him?) And then venom will have to step in to save the Innocents and feel guilty for the new monster that was given birth by his symbiote...

Hardy is too damn short to play Brock. And did they not see how terrible Hardy's Bane was? This is going to suck.

Ya! Now that's how you cast for Venom! Not that terrible actor Topher Grace who always gets miscast in movies. Eddie Brock isn't some dweeb- he's a jock. Why would you cast Topher Grace? What was that? I'm not even sure why he gets cast in movies at all because he's an awful actor, but that in particular was complete stupidity from the moment he was cast.

Well, that and Predators. Seriously, spoilers behind the curtain. Ya, ok, he's a psychopathic killer. Sure. Whatever. You were warned.

Anyway, It's also awesome because Tom Hardy is a fantastic actor so if they have an at least decent script that movie will be great.

@cornbredx: Yeah, I think most knew from the beginning that Topher Grace was a horrible choice to play Venom. Hardy could do some interesting things in the role.

I kindof like this casting choice. He did well enough as Bane. Mightve been better if it was someone a little taller, but they can work around that.

I'd take Hardy seriously as Venom but i'm still not going for this.......

don't support Sony's Spiderman movies, if you do you lessen the chance they'll extend his stay in MCU......support Homecoming please but not this.....that is all.....

@darthrevenx: You have it all wrong. The more $$$$ they see, the more they'll milk it. That means licensing it to Disney for their tie ins. By all means, do support this.

@dirthurts: NO, you have it wrong, if Sony thinks they can make more money themselves without Marvel they'll yank the rights away quicker than you can say EXCELSIOR! they signed the deal with Marvel cus they pissed people off with Spidey 3 then canned the second trilogy when the second film in the trilogy bombed.....

@darthrevenx: I respectively disagree. They can make the movies as fast as they can make them. There's a maximum profit there. If they can make movies and make someone else make them too, that's just more icing on their cake.

And, knowing Disney's track record with making cold hard cash off the Marvel characters, you know they only see wins coming from them. Heck, they propbably know Disney will make them more money than they can make themselves.

@dirthurts: simply put Sony owns the film rights, marvel signed a deal to have Spidey in MCU but if Sony makes more money off their own productions it could kill any negotiating power Marvel has now.....this isn't Disney vs Sony, it's Marvel vs Sony.....marvel has been trying to get back all their IP and between X-Men, fantastic 4 and Spiderman that's an impossibility....

even for Marvel to get Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in Age of Ultron Marvel had to give up a character or 2 for X-Men...I can't remember who tho....as for the Spidey deal marvel agreed to a joint profit sharing of the Spiderman toy line which believe me is lucrative....Spider merch sells more than anything else marvel....

even with horrendous movies Spidey is still super popular......

anyways if Sony makes bank on Venom it'll embolden them to try and pull Spidey from MCU which would be a moronic move but with a successful movie regardless of quality they'd do just that out of arrogance....don't believe me??

Great casting choice, but Venom without Spider-man is like the chicken without the egg. Venom needs Spider-man to even work as a character.

@lionheartssj1: I don't think Spider-man will be absent. I think the Venom origin will simply happen in another movie, and this one won't have him in it at all.

I don't see any movie producer being dumb enough to just do venom without his origin.
