Spider-Man Will be Aged 15 in Marvel's Forthcoming Reboot

Teen Spidey!

For the second time this decade, Spider-Man is being rebooted for the big screen, and now the director has spoken about his approach to the Spidey story.

Jon Watts is the man in charge of bringing the wise-cracking wallcrawler to cinemas in 2017. As Den Of Geek reports, Watts has discussed the film, which stars British actor Tom Holland as Peter Parker, with Empire magazine.

No Caption Provided

"I love the idea of making a coming-of-age high school movie. We're really going to see Peter Parker in high school and get deeper into that side of it. He's just 15 now," said Watts. "Tom was pretty perfect. He's very athletic. He can actually do a backflip! If he didn't already capture the spirit of the character, with that on top, the kid is Spider-Man".

Watts' additional quip that "there are only so many times you can kill Uncle Ben" confirms that he won't be telling the overly familiar origin story. In April this year, at a press conference for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained that they were working on the basis that viewers were already familiar with Spider-Man's origins.

"In Spider-Man's very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin, for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics," Feige said. "It will not be an origin story. But we want to reveal it in different ways and spend much more time focusing on this young high school kid in the MCU dealing with his powers."

Ahead of the standalone film, it is expected that the new Spider-Man will make his first Marvel Studios appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which is due in May 2016. In February this year, a deal was struck between Marvel and Sony--who hold the big screen right to the character--to allow Marvel to include him in their ongoing Cinematic Universe. 2017's Spider-Man will be a co-production between both studios.

How about skipping the high school origins and just make a movie when he's already established?

@camou504: Because he hasn't been mentioned in any of the prior MCU films. I'd much rather see a film about an older Spider Man, but, you know... continuity...

@The-Neon-Seal: Stephen Strange was only just mentioned in Cap 2, and he's a grown man who's clearly been using his powers long enough to be noticed by SHIELD but not the rest of the MCU. Why can't Spider-man follow suit?

@Zombrex: They never said he had his powers in The Winter Soldier, just that he was on a list of potential threats. Notice they also had dozens, if not hundreds, of other people on that list. Obviously they didn't all have powers, too.

The problem that these movie makers keeping making is twisting the story from what the comic is. The comic is big because the story is good. that and bad casting. Spiderman is around 6'2 or 6'4 (cant remember). He is also built like a quarterback football player, not like some skinny punk. they also should not be spending the first 1/3 of the movie showing the process of him getting his abilities. That could be done in a 30 second flashback. Start the story where he is in college already in his 3 or 4th year. Also don't have 3 or 4 small stories packed into one movie. Also , get better writers.

@spartanx169x: lol No, the vast majority of Comics are great because of the characters. Very rarey, and only for the most part in the recent 20 years, have Comic Book stories started to get any good.

Just because there is a lot of lore, doesn't mean that all of it is well written.

@spartanx169x: According to most databases, Spidey is under 6', between 5'10" or 5'11". He's never been built like a truck, usually around 165lbs; the appeal to his design is that his rather unassuming stature belies ridiculous proportionate strength--equivalent to that of a human sized spider :P But yes, I do agree with the story muddling going on in the movies. There's always so much going on in the plot, setting up for the next movies, that there is nothing worth while in the current action.

@Chunkman: Hymm, I read on a trading card or something, he was over 6ft tall. I rmember because at the time I was surprised. But this was damn 20 years ago. I guess I made a mistake. Really, mMy only point is that he is not some skinny wimp like toby Mcguire. . He is decent size guy. I might have got him confused with venom. If they were both on the card I was reading.

@BassMan: It's not really a reboot, more of a slight reimagining. I wouldn't want them to follow the lore from the Raimi or Webb movies anyway( especially after Spider-man 3 and ASM 2 respectively).

@BassMan: wouldn't call it a reboot exactly when they aren't doing an origins story. sounds more like a "re-cast"

Spiderman used to be my favorite super hero. Now, with all these movies and über wacky plot changes and alternate stories, I just can't stand him.

Umm, a 15-year-old kid is not interested in saving the world from the Green Goblin. If a kid that young got Spiderman's powers, he'd be too busy taking frequent, long showers and impressing 15-year-old girls to fight super villains. He'd be using his spider sense to keep Auntie from catching him smoking pot or shooting other stuff out of his body besides webs. I don't remember a single kid in High School that would have been as moral and responsible as SpiderMAN is supposed to be.

@bdrtfm: The whole point of Spider-man was that Peter was driven to heroics by the death of his father figure. If that didn't happen then he'd probably fit your description.

@bdrtfm: Perhaps you have really sh*tty taste in friends? Keep in mind that the character Peter Parker was more or less orphaned as a child and his only relatives took him in. One of which he's directly responsible for the death of and that moment in his life weighs heavily on him because at that point he was acting selfishly. So to atone for that, he becomes a selfless hero even at that age. Ultimate universe was slightly different, but similar outcome.

@bdrtfm: Except this kid DID use his powers irresponsibly for a while when he first got them. He used them to acquire some degree of fame and money, and not for the short time period that the movies depict either. It wasn't until his uncle wound up being murdered in a situation that Parker could have stopped before it even got that far did he decide to be a hero. I'm pretty sure this tale is a well known one by now...

@horizonwriter: Yeah but, is that what people really want this movie to be about? Who the hell wants to watch a Spiderman movie about Spiderman dealing with puberty? I'm not sure I want to watch a superhero movie that is mostly about a kid dealing with growing up. I want to watch Spiderman man do Spiderman shit. Not a Spiderboy coming of age story. Normally they just show him getting his powers, doing a couple of stupid things and then flash forward to Uncle Ben dying and him going into kickass mode. I don't even like Tom Holland much less want to watch him in an awkward role of trying to act like Spiderman when he looks like he still hasn't gotten his first chest hair.

This is not a comic book being read by a bunch of preteens. It's supposed to be a blockbuster movie.

@bdrtfm: All those preteens that you talk about that read those comics and made Spider-Man one of the top selling super heroes ever are now adults with families and probably still fondly remember the character. Lets not forget that what made the character so popular to begin with was not only his powers but his struggles with the average teen's/20's something's problems. Do people want to see some teen drama flick with powers? No, but there is room for character growth rooted in real problems/issues that help ground the character. It's a Marvel flick so there's going to be legit action. No worries there but you do have to touch on aspects that have given the character such long-term viability. Lets also not forget that one of the biggest draws to the character is the fact that he's pretty much Marvel's solo David that has slaughtered far bigger Goliaths, that one super hero that others underestimate until they're flat on their back, which is something that suits a wiry 15 year old packing a pretty amazing suite of powers.

@bdrtfm: In Ultimate Spider-Man (comics) that was exactly what he did. He wasn't interested din fighting crime, he was to cool ...until a dick (whom he could have stopped easily) killed his uncle. Then he understood that with great power comes great responsibility and he couldn't be selfish any more.... a tough lesson to learn at 15... To be honest, when it comes to spider-man the ultimate spider-man comics (up until issue 90 or something) are pretty emotional and good. So yeah, I like to see a coming of age story...done proper.

@beuneus12: There will be at least 4 times as many cop movies or comedies as superhero movies this year, next year or any year to come. Marketing and coverage of superhero movies is at fever pitch but output isn't as high as people think.

Tom Holland is fucking 19 years old right now. By the time Civil War comes out he'll be just about 20 and by the time the standalone Spider-Man movie described above comes out he'll be at least 21. And he's to play 15?

What they flying ****? I want a 15-year-old Spider-Man movie, but the actor needs to be 15 or 16 for goodness' sake. Also, I don't understand why all our American superheroes need to be played by British actors, but that's a whole different story.
