Spider-Man Will be Aged 15 in Marvel's Forthcoming Reboot

Teen Spidey!

For the second time this decade, Spider-Man is being rebooted for the big screen, and now the director has spoken about his approach to the Spidey story.

Jon Watts is the man in charge of bringing the wise-cracking wallcrawler to cinemas in 2017. As Den Of Geek reports, Watts has discussed the film, which stars British actor Tom Holland as Peter Parker, with Empire magazine.

"I love the idea of making a coming-of-age high school movie. We're really going to see Peter Parker in high school and get deeper into that side of it. He's just 15 now," said Watts. "Tom was pretty perfect. He's very athletic. He can actually do a backflip! If he didn't already capture the spirit of the character, with that on top, the kid is Spider-Man".

Watts' additional quip that "there are only so many times you can kill Uncle Ben" confirms that he won't be telling the overly familiar origin story. In April this year, at a press conference for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained that they were working on the basis that viewers were already familiar with Spider-Man's origins.

"In Spider-Man's very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin, for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics," Feige said. "It will not be an origin story. But we want to reveal it in different ways and spend much more time focusing on this young high school kid in the MCU dealing with his powers."

Ahead of the standalone film, it is expected that the new Spider-Man will make his first Marvel Studios appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which is due in May 2016. In February this year, a deal was struck between Marvel and Sony--who hold the big screen right to the character--to allow Marvel to include him in their ongoing Cinematic Universe. 2017's Spider-Man will be a co-production between both studios.

Peter Parker'll be in a bloody push chair in the next reboot. Gettin' younger and younger everytime.

Avatar image for tr4newreck

sony owns the rights to spiderman(partially)

fox owns the rights to fantastic 4, deadpool, silver surfer and partial claims to the xmen

we will be inundated with cash grabs based on these brands for a little while longer

Avatar image for deseo1990

This why marvel is dead they ducked up what people loved about their characters now the only one thats keept it semi good is x men but for me im done with marvel

Avatar image for UnbornCorpser

@deseo1990: ....What? Those companies only have the rights to the movie representation and only for so long. Who really cares about that? The comics are the important items not the movies.

Avatar image for deseo1990

@UnbornCorpser: thats what i ment movie wise marvel blows ive seen machinima make fan made creations better than hollywood who has the bank for it yet throws garbage at its public

Avatar image for UnbornCorpser

@deseo1990: Fair enough then but not really surprising Hollywood hasn't done anything remotely good for what? The past 15 years? So I don't expect any movie, regardless of who directs it, to be all that great especially those with borrowed licenses from other companies.

I don't understand why filmmakers can't stick to source material when it comes to making a Spider-Man film.Be it Sam Raimi or Marc Webb, they eventually drift too far. I'll give this 're-boot' a chance, but this is the last time.

Avatar image for kelseyjb

How many times are they going to reboot spiderman, hell most of these super heros getting or had a reboot.

Avatar image for JamesJoule

well the title is spider-man not spider-kid ... so you better get your shit together and make him a college student as he was in the original comics

Avatar image for xenon_bloom

@JamesJoule: Reading Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol 1 right now - he's a high school student. As the comic grew so did he but the "original comics" featured a high schooler.

15? Really? Is it gonna be a movie for kids or who's supposed to watch a superhero kid in his puberty? And why the hell are there so many reboots if comics should offer endless amounts of material for new movies? Do people really wanna watch the same movie over and over again, just as a slightly different version? Well, I guess they do.

Avatar image for MaXiMuS2oo9

15? And this isn't an origin story!!

Avatar image for plug313

I'm excited to see what they come up with, but I'm still sad we won't get a third Amazing Spider-Man. I loved Andrew Garfield.

Avatar image for flames325

This will be garbage and its a shame since Spider Man use to be the best marvel movies there was

Avatar image for Swoopalz

Should have been Miles.

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus

Seems like a good idea, the MCU needs some younger heroes too.

Avatar image for robert32116

Completely agree something Marvel is going to have to deal with in the next five to seven years?

Avatar image for ariel_g

...and it's articles like THIS on a GAMING website that get on Mutahar's nerves.

Avatar image for plug313

@ariel_g: I would say it's because a lot of gamers are interested in this. me included.

Spider-Boy, Spider-Boy, does whatever a.....spider coy!

Avatar image for Henninger

They need to just have a monologue in the 1st 10 mins of the movie saying he got his pwrs from the spider bite & not show it again if they're gonna reboot it AGAIN. Everyone knows who Peter Parker got his pwrs. I don't mind the high school setting. But don't waste time showing us that bite again.

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus

@Henninger: That O and E key are a real pain, huh?

Avatar image for gokuKOG

A reboot of a reboot of a reboot.

Avatar image for unzythun

teens again ? looool hey why not a 5 years old wolverine and deadpool and now that i am at it please send the baby girl thor and join 120 years old hulk to take care of them all .and please preeety please let it be a full 20s big long hair dead metal fan prof x that do drugs and smokes (don't forget smoking as its hype again in movies) and wants to kill all the living things on the universe as a bad gay , and don't forget to join a gay Odin as his partner in this evil scheme .

thank you

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus

@unzythun: That sounds like a slight overreaction.

Avatar image for TheAleksMG

Thinks this is going to be a shitty reboot, like the fantastic four

Avatar image for xzerocarnagex

I liked the last two films since reboot, they dont need another one, the current actor is just fine, stop messing about with reboots unless its absoloute necessary.

See i can understand that the resi evil films need a reboot or transformers because the story needs to be done rite ie more about the characters in resi evil than bringing in milas character, even though i like them, id still rather see resi evil done properly as close to the games as possible. Id also love to see a transformers done close to what the old cartoon was, with unicron n galvatron done properly not like last film but i do enjoy them but they just not done correctly n it annoys me.

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus

@xzerocarnagex: It was necessary since they were critical and financial failures.

Avatar image for Blk_Mage_Ctype

See, this is why I didn't want another reboot. Spider-Man's origin story has been done to death already and whiny, emo Spider-Teen isn't cool.

Anybody who is interested in a Spider-Man movie is almost certainly familiar with the hero's backstory and most-likely has already seen both of the Spider-Man (1) movies, so rather than redoing the backstory for a 3rd time, why not just make a Spider-Man movie that begins post backstory and doesn't waste time showing the audience a story it has already heard and probably seen twice already.

Both the Toby Macguire Spider-Man movie and Andrew Garfield The Amazing Spider-Man movies were fine, so those don't need remade! It was the crummy sequels that tried to force multiple villains into a single film and took multiple liberties with the source material that failed to hold the interest of audiences! We don't need the same damn story to be told a 3rd time, so just skip that and give us a Spider-Man movie in which Peter Parker is already Spider-Man and has learned to balance being both! PLEASE!

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Did you even read the article? They're not doing the origin story again.

Avatar image for Red_Frog

I'll pass, the Amazing reboot was a turd. They'll never get a better J.J. than J.K. Simmons and Willem Dafoe was on point.

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus

@Red_Frog: J.K. Simmons was in negotiations to come back as JJ when the plug was pulled on AS3.

It's possible he could show up in this, who knows?

Avatar image for Red_Frog

@Dragon_Nexus: Oh, that is a positive turn I wasn't aware of. If he were to reprise his role I think I could push myself to get a ticket. They'd need to give him some serious screen time, though.

Truth told, I'd probably get a ticket just to watch him yell at people for an hour in character. I hope whoever first mentioned his name for casting got a big fistful of cash as a bonus, that was brilliant.

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus

@Red_Frog: Only person I could imagine doing the character as well as him would be R. Lee Ermy

Avatar image for Ducez_III

Miles Morales was about 15...

Avatar image for dramaticlookguy

When have the words "a coming-of-age high school movie" ever been a good thing?

Avatar image for Vexov

@dramaticlookguy: Go, Teen drama, GO!

Avatar image for Smosh150

Just no, why reboot it again? As long as they do it better than the last reboot though, this is just my personal opinion, but I didn't think much of it.

Avatar image for Vexov

@Smosh150: Its like Dynasty Warriors: reboot it every 2nd game.

Avatar image for senorbusyman

so does this mean no more "Amazing" Spiderman? if so im glad andrew garfield was more of a joke as spiderman as to ryan reynolds not taking his green lantern role seriously

Avatar image for neo-rtsd

@senorbusyman: Andrew Garfield I felt was far more convincing as Peter Parker from the comics than Tobey McGuire was. The two movies with Andrew in them were far superior to the previous installments, they were actually like the comics.

Avatar image for TheAleksMG

@neo-rtsd: +1

Avatar image for DutchZombie

@neo-rtsd: I don't know what spider-man comics you grew up reading, but the first two Raimi movies were spot on (minus a few conceits).

Avatar image for koospetoors

Welp, that explains the choice of prepubescent actor for the role of Spidey.

And coming of age high school movie? Didn't the last two first Spider-Man films already tackle that? Jaysus just choose an awesome point in the middle of his superhero career and do that.

Avatar image for -Vulpix-

How many times are they going to reboot this?

Avatar image for PetarPB

This is something like the 30th season of Power Rangers. So lame.

Avatar image for RoccoHout

Yet another reboot? Eh, I guess it can't be worse than Spiderman 3 and the Amazing Spiderman movies. But its hard to beat the first 2 Spidermans from Raimi. Honestly this milking needs to stop or atleast give it a break.

Avatar image for normanislost

@RoccoHout: to bring him into the marvel/Disney films? i'll take another reboot

Avatar image for RossRichard

Third time this series gets rebooted since 2002.
