After weeks of dramatics between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, the two have finally come to an agreement between Spider-Man and the character's inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For the new deal, the two will joint-produce a standalone Spider-Man movie, and the character will appear in another MCU movie.

The untitled third film in the new Spider-Man franchise is now scheduled for release on July 16, 2021, according to Variety, and as part of the new working arrangement between the two studios, Spider-Man is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there is no news as of this writing to which movie he'll appear in.

"I am thrilled that Spidey's journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it," Marvel Studios President Feige explained. "Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."

Sony has already commented on this news, publishing a simple tweet of a spider.

Actor Tom Holland didn't write anything or record a video expressing how excited he was. Instead, he posted a video on Instagram from The Wolf of Wall Street. It's very fitting.

The past month for the Sony/Marvel relationship over the rights to Spider-Man has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least. It was first reported that Sony and Marvel couldn't come to an agreement on the movie rights--Sony currently owns the rights to the Spider-Man character. There was a lot of bizarre back-and-forth between the two studios, and it seemed like Spider-Man was out of the MCU for good, until today. Fans of Marvel's films will surely be exceptionally excited about this news.

Amid all of this, Holland discussed early plans for his next Spider-Man movie, saying it would be "very different." Whether that will still be the case is unknown.

As for Sony, they're still working on Marvel movies that take place outside of the MCU. A Spider-Verse sequel is still happening, there's a Venom sequel on the way, a Morbius movie starring Jared Leto is coming, and most recently, a Madame Web movie is in the works.
