Spector apologizes for Wolfenstein comments

Deus Ex, Epic Mickey designer says sorry to team at MachineGames, but still believes there is "too little variety" in games today.

Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector has apologized for speaking out against the recently announced Wolfenstein: The New Order. In an update to his Facebook page, the industry veteran apologized directly to the team at MachineGames.

No Caption Provided

"I'm sorry. I owe the Wolfenstein team an apology," Spector said. "I wasn't trying to diss you or your game. I have total respect for anyone making a game. I know how hard it is… And to everyone who pointed out that I didn't know enough about the game to judge, well, you were right. Consider this my mea culpa."

Spector went on to explain that he was not motivated to lash out at the Wolfenstein announcement over his most recent games Epic Mickey and its sequel coming up short. In fact, he argued the opposite is true.

"No sour grapes here. None. I'm disappointed that people assume they know my motivations for saying what I said," Spector said. "I'm not bitter about the 'failure' of the Disney Epic Mickey games--I don't consider them failures. They're the two best-selling games I've worked on!"

Though Spector said he is sorry for describing Wolfenstein: The New Order as a "generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game," he maintains that there is not enough variety in games today.

"Though I was wrong to take out general frustrations on an individual game and on a single team, I'll stand by my overall statement about lack of variety and innovation in mainstream gaming," Spector said. "I was simply expressing, once again, my long-held belief that we make too many shooters, lots of which look, sound and feel like basically the same game dressed up in different clothes. I've been saying that for years--it's nothing new. Wolfenstein got in the line of fire, but I've been shooting at this target for a long time."

Spector's full apology note is available on his Facebook page.

Wolfenstein: The New Order launches later this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles. It will not feature a multiplayer component. Check out GameSpot's preview of the game below and come back tomorrow and Friday for continuing coverage.

Why wouldn't you think before saying something instead of apologizing after?

@max-hit What? Maybe he said it because he believed it, genius. Sometimes people apologize AFTER they see the effect their words have. That's the point.

Shouldn't he be criticising consumers as well for the lack of innovation in the industry?

Ive played Shooters for so long that ive just lost all interrest in the shooting genre - Like He said too many shooters with different skins different maps and they all do the same thing basically- especially a shooter with no online... i feel like were early 2000

For those who like shooters its great news for them since Shooters are being released every other month. To each their own

Leave the Nazis alone. The biggest threats to this date are, hunger, poverty, lack of jobs and education. The biggest fight people are about to have is on the job application line.

Take EVERYTHING they said in the video and instead show call of duty footage, or battlefield 3. If you can make out a difference out of their statements while comparing each game with former mentioned, kudos to you, because you're on drugs, and someone that high deserves my respect.

There are too many shooters but let them get released and compete.

I don't agree that there is not enough variety in games. There is plenty out there to be found but you may have to go beyond your normal boxed product and possibly even beyond your console. Between GOG, Steam, PSN, Xbox Live and even motion sensing technology there are plenty of games out there for people to try that aren't shooters. Throw in tablets & smart phones and now you're talking about another level of game variety. Those aren't all AAA titles but they are doing all the things you would expect lower budget games to do. Take risks and innovate to come up with new and interesting concepts.

Over time those innovations will influence and shape AAA title development just as previous games have shaped the current AAA titles.

While his overall statement might be warranted and actually be true, his attack was completely unnecessary. That said, he apologized, which shows great character. It should be left at that.

People influence the market with their wallets. As experienced as this guy is, he seems to have a naive concept about business and marketing.

When these 'different' games come out, the dialog needs to happen in order to encourage people to buy them. If people dont buy them, then companies will go back to making things they know will sell... UNTIL, they stop selling... and then try something different.

I agree with his overall point, but he had no reason to pick on the Wolfenstein game...at least not until he's played it.

The author of this article has one of the worst writing habits that game journalists use to lengthen their articles. He simply posts a snippet of the apology and then continues to describe what the snippet means, as if we, the readers, are incapable of grasping the meaning all by ourselves.

I think he does it to add some "depth" or "fluff" to his article, but it's almost insulting the readers' intelligence by spoon feeding us the point of the apology bit by bit. He uses this cheap writing trick to disguise the plagiarism in his article.

Not a fan of this Wolfenstein, i mean everything Warren Spector said seems to be true...then again it's still early to tell how the game will be in the end.

@Egotte Don't forget the sports games!

If you get off the AAA games, variety starts going up a lot. (Though, if you go too far down the funding pyramid, you suddenly find yourself in an endless sea of 2D platformers.)

@Zloth2 @Egotte Yeah, just look at the steam's indie games. Most are 2D platformers with a "creative gimmick". Not saying all of them are bad but after you have played the first couple of levels, you pretty much experienced everything the game has to offer.

@ahpuck

He apologized to the makers of this specific game, saying that they don't deserve the brunt of his criticisms of the entire industry AND that he doesn't know enough about the specifics of this game to criticize it so specifically.

@deathstream @ahpuck You're correct. But seriously, after the 1000th FPS, what can you expect from Wolfenstein? Except for Rage's boomerang and Crysis 3's X-bow, I personally have not seen anything remotely original in the FPS genre in a very long time. The FPS genre needs to take a break, just like the fighting genre did, it will only lead to better games in the future.

@ahpuck Totally agree. Spector's a God Father of Gaming and he deserves applause for speaking out. The only ones not saying this are the risk adverse cowards producing such crap. Another 20 years of this FPS crap won't be good for anybody.

@GreggD @Redsyrup @ahpuck Are you talking about Thief or Deus Ex? How can you compare either of those games to the crap bullet sponges people are playing today? Those games had the depth of adventure titles than FPS shooting galleries.

Don't get me wrong I like Wolfenstein too. It's just Natzis driving bi-pedal mechs has more in common with Sci-Fi. Why put the name Wolfenstein on the box?

That was just bitterness Mr Spector

The average gamer age is 30 year old and most of us are interested in mature games.I have no interest in games with childish tones and which shy away from matures themes. To get me interested without those attributes you need to be long established and classic series like Zelda or Mario.Ultimately it's the market which judge what is wanted or not.You tried something and it failed, that's unfortunate but the market has spoken.Don't shoot down other developers for not taking your road.

Personally,i haven't played FPS in a really long time. The last 2 i was contemplating buying was Bioshock infinite because of matures themes it was addressing and FC blood dragon for nostalgia and fun factor.Right now its mostly RPGs i play. When people will be really tired of the FPS genre ,publishers and devs are going to feel it in their pockets and adjust accordingly.

@Zloth2 @frozenux That's according to him not Disney or the market.Epic mickey 2 failed at retail,it was a commercial failure and that resulted in the closure of Junctions Studios by Disney. He is bitter because most of the interest in games now days are geared towards the FPS genre and overall mature games.

@deathstream @frozenux @Zloth2 I know who Warren Spector is and that doesn't make him impervious to human emotions or making a bad game.He has started to be very vocal about violent games and FPS since he started his epic mickey franchise (which kind of ironic considering Deus ex).

Fairplay to him for eating the humble pie.

But he has to realise how silly a statement it is.

Firstly, for those who enjoy FPS games then it's good news, for those who don't why should it affect them? Was a time when there was a glut of platformers out there but it all goes around. Evolution and innovation takes time, the right combination of circumstances... It ain't gonna happen just because you decry what you see as a stagnant state of affairs.

And secondly, the pedant in me resents the hyperbole he used. "Does the world need ..." No, no it does not. Does the world need more video games at all? Nope. It doesn't need to hear his opinion either but the world ain't gonna cry about it.

@deathstream @Shanks_D_Chop I wasn't suggesting that there aren't people interested in his thoughts on the matter.

Merely that if he's going to talk about things the world doesn't NEED, opinions are on that list.
