Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny Hands-On

We check out the E3 demo of Namco Bandai's weapon-based fighter and are surprised to find a God of War on the roster.

Earlier today, while checking out new PSP games and hardware at Sony's sizeable E3 booth, we had an opportunity to get our hands on a demo version of Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny. Only eight of the game's 20 characters are playable in the demo (Siegfried, Hilde, Mitsurugi, Cassandra, Nightmare, Raphael, Astaroth, Maxi), but an additional two, both of which are new, appeared on the select screen as teasers. The first, who's playable elsewhere on the show floor in God of War III, is Kratos; the second is the previously revealed Dampierre, who is armed with two short blades attached to his wrists and a fearsome moustache.

Many of Soul Calibur's moves are a little tricky to perform using the analog nub, but when we used the analog stick in conjunction with the four face buttons (vertical slash, horizontal slash, kick, guard) and the shoulder buttons (which function as two and three face buttons, respectively), we found the game to be every bit as smooth and responsive as its console counterparts. Broken Destiny looks great on the PSP as well, and all five of the environments included in the demo were instantly recognizable from other versions of the game, as were the combatants.

Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny is currently scheduled for release later this year. We look forward to bringing you more information on this promising fighter as soon as it becomes available.
