Sony's PS4 Free-to-Play Games Aim to Make You Feel "Empowered," Exec Says
"Not something where you say, 'Oh my god, I could have played this game, but you're just gating me.'"
Love them or hate them, free-to-play games are becoming increasingly commonplace on consoles--one of the latest examples being Guns Up! for PlayStation 4. The free-to-play business model remains somewhat controversial, and not every game handles microtransactions the same way.
Now, PlayStation boss Scott Rohde has talked more about the company's approach to free-to-play games.

"Free-to-play, whether we like or not, is a prevalent part of the industry we all love," Rohde told Kinda Funny Games. "There's a whole generation of young game players--they don't know any different. So we have to experiment [with free-to-play games]."
Rohde went on to say that Sony's hope is that you'll feel "empowered" after playing a Sony free-to-play game, not spurned by questionable in-game systems.
"We are trying very, very hard to make a free-to-play game that makes you feel empowered as a gamer and not something that has gates," he explained. "Not something where you say, 'Oh my god, I could have played this game, but you're just gating me.' It's not there. If you want to grind and play these games forever without spending a dollar, you can do it."
Some other upcoming free-to-play games published by Sony include Kill Strain and Drawn to Death.
