Sony's PS Plus Storage Boost Is Available Now

PlayStation Plus cloud storage has expanded.

24 Comments

If you're constantly running out of storage space for your save files, today is your lucky day: Sony's PlayStation Plus storage expansion is now live, giving all PS Plus members 100 GB of cloud storage.

That's 10 times the previous allowance PS Plus members received as part of their subscription. The expansion comes as Sony removes free PS3 and PS Vita games from its monthly games selection, focusing on PS4 games only for the near future at least.

Now Playing: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered And The Witness - PS Plus March Free Games

February is the final month free PS3 and PS Vita titles will be available to PS Plus members. Those titles are Divekick and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3, along with Gunhouse and Rogue Aces for Vita. PS4 players, meanwhile, get the 2016 Hitman reboot and Ubisoft's medieval fighting game For Honor. The new PS Plus games are out now, along with an additional bonus for Apex Legends players.

PS4 will soon receive a new system software update too, after Sony sent out beta invites for version 6.50 of the console's firmware. It seems there are no major features coming in that update as yet.

For reference, xbox users get an unlimited amount of cloud storage for free.
And they still get 4 games with their gold subscription.

This is not sony adding value. Nor is it them compensating for something. This is sony making the psn an even bigger ripoff than it already was, and getting you to thank them for it.

@uberDave: you can thank PS plus for the free games because they started it first. You also said ps plus was already a rip off. Are you also implying that live gold is a rip off because Sony pretty much always gave more games than gold. The storage boost does not compensate for the games and I'm sure Sony knows that. We'll see what else they offer and with ps5 around the corner, it will be free ps5+4 games.

@pcps4xb:

PS plus never gave you free games. You paid up front not knowing what games you were going to get. Then while nobody was looking, sony made it mandatory to play online, forcing people to use it and pocketing the money.

And PSN IS a ripoff. Objectively. It costs the same as live (more when you consider things like live rewards which many people sue to make live essentially free) but provides fewer features. No cross play unless the dev is big enough to force sony's hand. No mods unless they are heavily restricted beyond what the other console does. Forget about cloud servers. Gravity rush 2 gets gimped like a year after release meanwhile you can still play Gears 1 online, even across console generations. And now, they are taking away HALF of the value of Plus and replacing it with a crappier, paywalled version of something live does better, and for free.

"I'm sure Sony knows that. We'll see what else they offer and with ps5 around the corner, it will be free ps5+4 games."

Of course they know that. They also know that people like you will defend them to the last and never demand better, which is why they've been able to pull this anti consumer BS this entire generation. If they really cared, they wouldn't have done this in the first place. You act like offering hypothetical ps5 games 2 years from now justifies a lack on content now. And based on the trends, microsoft will also be offering next gen games with their service as well. But they will have continued to offer a good value for live all along.

@uberDave: thanks. Now after reading that comment, it's easy to see how biased and double stanard you are. "Then while nobody was looking, sony made it mandatory to play online, forcing people to use it and pocketing the money" what?!? Umm ok so by your logic MS is forcing people to pay for gold? Are you actually hearing yourself? Ok sony announced it was going to charge for ps plus so stop lying. Up until now ps gave more games that ussually would cost more. I'm defending Sony? Umm no, i know the storage is definitely not a good trade off and I have no problem to say it and i hardly use plus or gold. Maybe two years for each since launch. The problem with you is you're too far up MS's poop shoot, you cant realize your double standards.

@pcps4xb:

Well I certainly don't want to be accused of being double stanard.

Well duh, of course MS was forcing people to pay for online. That’s what a paywall is. The difference being that they were upfront about it and you can see where the value goes. Microsoft used the live fees to help fund the service. The money goes to keeping live a good service, whereas sony just pockets it. Any dev who puts a game on xbox has free access to as many dedicated servers as they want. Whereas sony has killed the servers for games less than 2 years after launch. I’ve already further elaborated on the difference in value offered between the two services and I can’t help but notice how you ignored that entirely.

How is PSN now better than it was on the ps3? How has it improved? What additions have been made to justify a 50 dollar a year price tag?

“Up until now ps gave more games that ussually would cost more.”

You know, if you need to hide behind the Vita, maybe you don’t have the strongest argument. Plus gave out a pair of games per platform. Which means you needed a ps3, a ps4 and to be one of the 5 people who owned a vita in order to get them. On xbox one you got 4 games. Hell, you could even redeem the one games without buying a one. And the relative cost is irrelevant considering the games on live tended to score significantly better.

@uberDave: Do you have to pay for XBOX Live to play free to play games or not? Such as Fortnite/APEX/H1Z1/Paladins/Realm Royale etc.

@uberDave: first off none of this really matters to me because i haven't had gold or plus and when I did, I hardly ever played the free games. You keep acting as if Sony never announced they would be charging for the service and just started charging without anyone knowing....wrong. I don't have a vita but alot games given were cross platform(vita+ps4) the ps3 games obviously could not be played because of different architect. The ps network is definitely more stable since ps3. And for being the biggest gaming network for consoles (not sure about pc), it sure is running pretty damn stable. Although there are more people on psn, I'm not even arguing that it's the best. Both PS and XB has its pros and cons but you're so biased and one sided, you don't admit the cons from Xbox. Although I love to play on all platforms, for me ps4 for the exclusives.

After they raised their price it is about time such improvement happens! Good to hear that.

Perhaps I will subscribe again.....I wish there would be a PS Now & PS Plus combo package.

@Jimbowesker: because you're running out of space for save files?? i'm sorry, i don't mean to come over cynic, but i've played quite some games on my ps4 and the space save files take is almost nothing. where do you see the value in this?

Another epic anti consumer fail from Sony, it just goes on and on. Take something away lots of people use and replace it with something worthless than 1 in 1000 will use. Another nail in the coffin for next gen, all these little things add up alongside crossplay charging for backwards compatability through NOW etc etc. RIP

a feature nobody needs... great. this is sony's way of giving us a "reward" to make up for the lack of vita/ps3 games going forward. since i will never even use 50GB of cloud storage, this is a very bad trade-off.

@Xristophoros: I'm sure it will be better when ps5 comes out and start giving ps5 games also but until then this is definitely not a good trade off. They would be foolish to piss people off now before the release of ps5.

That is good news. I can back up everything now instead of picking and choosing.

@Xristophoros:

Really? I thought it was 10gb. I got to a point about a year or so ago where I had to start to clean it as it was full.

It may have been longer than that mind

If like me you use multiple saves on certain games, you can quickly fill space up. I use a all the slots on RDR2 for example. Its over a GB in size

So does this mean PS3 and Vita get to use this 100GB limit too? Or are they still stuck on like 1GB or whatever it is?

@Pete41608: Nope. Just an increase in cloud storage capacity for those who subscribe, no patches required.

@Pete41608: it’s not a software update..you don’t have to update the console for them to update cloud storage
