Sony: XBL HDTV "a disservice"

SCEA's Dave Karraker says he'd be upset upon hearing about Microsoft's recently revealed multimedia download scheme if he owned an HDD-less Xbox 360.

Last night, Microsoft unveiled an ambitious plan to make available a sizeable offering of high-definition movies and television shows on Xbox Live on demand. As is becoming common in the increasingly acrimonious next-gen console war, one side was quick to respond with a scathing criticism of the other's latest move.

"I think they are doing a disservice to their consumer base because they are ignoring all those people who bought the Core system," said Sony Computer Entertainment America PR chief Dave Karraker, referring to the lower-end $299 Xbox 360 system. Said system does not come with the attachable hard drive necessary to store content downloaded off of Xbox Live.

Naturally, SCEA's head spokesman pointed out that both the $499 and $599 models of the PlayStation 3 have hard drives built in. "We would never segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn't buy the top of the line system," said Karraker. The HDD-equipped premium Xbox 360 costs $399, and the hard drive itself costs $99.99 when bought separately.

The executive also pointed out the fact that 7 gigabytes of the Xbox 360's 20-gigabyte hard drive are taken up by preloaded content, such as the game Hexic, and its operating system. He did not point out the fact that nearly 4GB of said content is deletable. Since only test units have been made available to the press, it is unknown how much of the final retail PS3s' hard drives, which weigh in at 20GB or 60GB, will be taken up by their operating systems and preloaded content.

Microsoft plans on launching its video and movie service on November 22. Sony executives said at its 2006 Gamers Day that the company will eventually tap its vast library of music, video, and movie content to distribute online to PS3s, but they won't say when. "We haven't announced when other entertainment content, beyond games, will be available from the PlayStation Store," said Karraker.

How retarded do u have to be to say that MS is lying by saying it has a 20 gig but really its only 17, last time I checked, it had 20 gigs, even if some of the gigs are being used by the OS, its still 20 gigs. And last timed I checked 17 gigs plus 4 gigs equals 21 gigs, learn math. Oh and to the "UBER NOOB" Nappan, by you posting what you did, you got sucked in just like all of us, you obviously want to be heard, buy all 3, good for ya, but lets see what you will say in about 1 month when Sony flunks

NoLimitJay1 Selling P$2s that always break is a disservice. Charging 300 for a portable system that is uncomfortable to hold and full of p$1 ports is a disservice. Selling sequel after sequel of Ratchet and Clank is a disservice. Charging 600 for a new p$3 just so they can push their new gimp format (no need to list all the other gimp formats theyve tried that have failed) is a disservice. The P$3 is much more of a disservice then anything MS has done. I pretty much agreed to everything there except the last thing. MS is one of the worst company's for desservices. No other company can compare to them.

I see Sony doing the exact same thing Apple is now doing to Microsoft: Knowing that their hardware is no longer so great and grand (because of years of hype), they now spend all their time and energy trying to bash the competition who ISN'T screwing up and who WILL probably be around a lot longer than them and has INFINITELY more marketing muscle then them, should MS ever choose to fight back. Fortunately though, Microsoft is taking the higher road and not countering Sony's statements at all. Well, that's not true. They simply release products, services & games gamers want instead of whiny press releases.

gamerguy46 I'm just going to say this...why on earth would you buy a core system anyway? You get the complete and total shaft and it's not like the REAL 360 was that much more expensive. ======================================================= Originally people bought it cause it may have been the only version they can get their hands on. At this time there's not uch reason unless MS comes out with a 100G HD. Buying a core and the 100G would be a less expensive choice than getting a premium and upgrading

MS fanboys are so cute when they're rabid. Keep fighting the good fight guys, I'll just go and, you know, buy all three consoles and enjoy them while you scream about "who's winning". Here's a tip, if you worry about who wins this silly "war" you're the one who's actually losing.

Leave it to sony to talk about Microsoft. Amidst all the bad press they've taken, it makes sense they'd try to dump some of it on the 360. However these negative remarks are a bit of a stretch, for sony execs to say microsoft is 'disserving' its customers. It would only be 'disserving' if they took -away- those harddrives from people who wanted this content. But people who didn't want a harddrive made that decision for themself. That's why we live in 'the land of the free' i think it just shows how desperate sony has become.

But isn't there some missing features on the cheaper ps3 you can't upgrade? Sure I heard somthing about it not having Wifi, if so does that mean Sony are not going to make any use of it until they give budget ps3 owners wifi for free?:DDD

Well it's as plain as day to see that Sony is more concerened with the 360 consumers than their own. Sony, considering your recent track record, you best be worrying about your own consumers and the disservice you are bestowing onto them.

More spin from the not so savvy people at Sony... They seriously have lost touch with the consumer base, are they saying that a Xbx360 customer who only paid 3/5 of what a base level PS3 cost will be disappointed that if they elect to spend $99 on a harddrive they can get HDTV content. I wonder how many hours it took in Sony's "Spin doctor" HQ to try to make it look like a bad idea. But having said that, at least they managed to come up with something ridiculous enough to print, good work! Seems Sony is spending more money on hiring people who can come up with bonehead ways to make xbx360 look bad instead of focussing on coming out with a console that actually has enough volume and low price enough to become something someone gives a damn about.... Go BetaMax, Go minidisk, go the Sony memory stick, all about as useful as a bluray drive in a gaming console. Morons...

Hold on. One poster said that a HDD was a fundemental piece of current gen equipment? The only current gen system with a "usable" HDD is the Xbox. PS2 had one, that only three (could be a few more) games used, and the GameCube did not have one. MS pioneered the HDD, and now Sony wants to jump on the bandwagon and bash MS. Xbox Live carries a fee, a very small fee, because they need servers and bandwidth to save Gamer data, such as Achievements, Gamer Tag, and more, so don't bash the fee. Play some PS2 online if you wanna see free online gaming.

I bought a PS2 on launch day, and had it all the way up until last year. The only reason I don't have it now is because I made the mistake of having it sent to me through UPS when I moved and got nothing but a black box full of loose pieces back. Have really never heard about PS2's breaking anywhere but here. Not sure what you're comparing PSP to since it's not just a game system. It's really a very good buy for the features. I paid that much just for my ipod, which has only 2 of its features and about 2 hours of battery life playing videos. Not including the excessive amount of protection on all the icrap, the terrible controls, and the fact that it was totally useless to me while charging until I went and spent another $50 on a 3rd party accessory. Everyone sells sequels so expecting you won't be buying Halo 3 there. And i'm not sure what that last one is about, Blu-Ray players themselves are already far more expensive than the PS3 and being backed by Hollywood so you're going to have to buy one eventually anyway. I don't see the problem with selling something you helped develop, especially not at such a loss.

digitalheadbutt, I actually was agreeing with you. Just fleshing it out more for the "special" people. Lol. As for the taking the comments too seriously, you're right but sadly it's a factor. This knucklehead comment is a non-issue but yet this thread has 1200+ comments. I eventually will get a PS3, but honestly this Sony arrogance exasperates me.

ricsuave::True, core gamers KNEW they wouldn't get the whole online experience. But MS absolutely made it clear they wouldn't. The choice was with the buyer. If I buy a regular TV, I know that I won't be able to take advantade of HD features, it's the same thing.

I was going more for the idea that the folks who bought the less featured system knew exactly what they were getting into and hence wouldn't really care if they don't have access to certain content. So I agree with you actually. I should have said "...would have waited a couple more weeks and bought the more complete system."

ricsuave: As for the P.R. move, I don't get how pissing off 360 owners who are still potential customers helps them. Look how polarized people are on here..

If someone actually gets pissed by a comment like Karracker's then they're taking it too personally. He points out a very obvious weakness in comparison to the PS3's potential. Until that potential actually pays out though it's all just empty words. Sony doesn't even have a high horse yet so to give MS crap for a really solid system is premature. Since they both have good games I want to own both but I'll be damned if I can drop 1100 bucks without feeling it.

EphraimShay Sony has gotten so extreme in their arrogance with this blame PS3 that they are going to find out this holiday season that they're not quite as superior as their narcissistic attitudes lead them to believe. ====================================================== No. They are going to fing that all the parents that can't find one of the 400-500 thousand "available" PS3's this christmas are going to go buy a Wii or 360 or both. That was MS's great move coming out a year early, when they were scarce last xmas there was no other next gen console to buy. Although Sony could have cut Nintendo's DS throats by dropping the price of the PSP then.

derangedphoenix Wii60. That's intersting. Nintendo AND MS have said that consumers could buy a Wii AND a 360 for the price of a PS3. Does anyone think a "work together rivalry" could develop between the 2? That would not be good news to Sony.

Sony made a statement about videos being downloadable because they are bitter that: 1) Their Connect store NEVER took off as hoped and most likely never will. 2) They could never even get videos on their Connect store like they promised PSP owners (remember them? I think there's like 12 or so). 3) Bluray is AGAINST HD-video being downloadable. That's a big gripe between the HDDVD/Bluray people. Bluray wants complete control over the videos on their disc and if you want to play the same movie off the disc, on your harddrive and on your PSP, you need to buy 3 versions of it. Sony is deathly afraid if the video is stored on the HDD, some hackers will be able to break the encryption more easily since it will be just data on a harddrive and much easier to access than a BR disc directly. Plus, if people begin watching HD-videos through the internet more than through discs (which is perfectly conceivable since hi-speed internet is growing at a faster rate than HDTV usage), then the Bluray format will be completely useless. Sony won't get any money off royalties from an unused medium and then they are SOL. :) Good luck Sony!

Honestly I don't get what Sony is trying to accomplish with statements like this. For example I remember in the PS1 cycle when the head of the makers of GAMEDAY for the PS1 made a comment about Madden's new "liquid AI" that went like this: "Liquid AI is what ran down their pants leg when they saw Gameday" They polarized Madden fans and never recovered. I think that Sony should have said nothing or if they HAD to comment said something along the lines of: "It's an interesting service they are planning to utilize. I'm not sure that the current configuration of the 360 is optimal for it, but time will tell I guess. We have our own ideas that will come up in the future on downloadable content that we feel takes more advantage of the technology." Boom. Gets the point across without the arrogance.

Taking a quick break from Gears of War. All I can say right now is that I would be hooked on this game even with out the graphics. This is what makes a console, a great freakin exclusive like this.....Wow ! Now i'm even more excited about Lost Planet, Bioshock, Alan Wake, Too Human and so on. The line up that 360 has coming is definately something to wreckon with. Oh ... and being able to download Southpark is genious. Just get me a bigger HDD ASAP !!!

ricSuave, I agree with you in many ways! Sega wanted to add the DVD player, remember? But back in '98/'99, the cost of a DVD player drive was too much. So they instead opted for a 1GB GD-Drive which was better than what was available but kept the price low for consumers. Sega wanted to avoid offering multiple SKUs when launching the DC after the fiasco that happened when they were trying to promote the Genesis, 32X, Saturn, Game Gear and Sega CD simultaneously from '94-'98. The PS2 was a product of luck. If the DVD had not been there, the product would not have been an instant hit like it became - casual gamers flocked to it because many people did not own a DVD player at the turn of the century. Ad Nintendo didn't make a mistake by holding off on Sony's Playstation deal. It was smarter for Nintendo to back out because Sony was actually getting the better deal because ITS version could play SNES games - a proven source of hit games (& $) while Nintendo would most likely get (back in the mid 90s) just a bunch of crappy FMV/Sega CD-like titles. The Playstation took off because it handled 3D better than the Saturn, that's all (goraud shading, transparent shadows and better quality video codec). The Saturn & PS were quite similar in power but companies like Squaresoft and Enix weren't going to Sega after abandoning Nintendo and the N64. The Playstation wasn't a great system by any means - it just was at the right time and place to steal, yes, STEAL) Sega's thunder. Sony has NEVER been needed in the game industry. They don't make any worthwhile 1st party titles and they're priority isn't even games/software, it's hardware (they make TVs, batteries, computers, music players, etc.) When Sony goes, I won't be sad at all. I still care about Atari & SNK more than I do for Sony!

I think they're playing the PR (public relations) game (SCEA PR chief Dave Karraker made the statement). Sony is trying to put a negative spin on an interesting 360 feature so that the user bases become more polarized. I do think it's kind of lame that some 360 users won't have access to the content without buying a peripheral but if they wanted to have all the features they should have waited a couple more weeks and bought the more complete system.

Sony hasn't said when they are going to make that kind of content available, them making digs at MS seems kind of premature.

Next-gen console wars are like school yard fights; there has to be some name calling and shoving before the, short and usually brief, fight happens.

Xbox live is an awsome service i think Sony have just relized how MS have left them far behind , what i mean to say the market has changed to a Direction t that MS excels in and Sony Struggles e.g. online gone are the days of the playstion 1 .Its such a shame that instead of forcing there un-needed format for this gen they put more effort into there up coming online services , have they finalised them yet i'm not sure ?. If online services downloads etc are to play a big part of this gen then Sony will struggle p.s. if you have had a 360 since launch how many moves forward have we had already MS are moving fast all the time there not sitting back this must concern Sony deeply hence his mis-placed outburst as too segregate consumers a PS3 in the U.K. in march @ £425 is a ********* obscene pricepoint ( 360= £280) . We shall see in time how this all pans out ................................

Everyone needs to just take a few deep breaths. This next-gen "war" thing has gotten way out of hand. The fact is that none of the next-gen consoles are truly good deals - even $250 is a sum that shouldn't be easily tossed away. Also, all three companies have made their share of marketing blunders. Sony's constant delays are unacceptable, and the miniscule number of PS3 units that will be available this year is outright laughable. Yet Microsoft's XBL practices seem highly questionable to me - in fact, I have questioned from day one how that service has any right carrying a subscription fee - and Microsoft's harddrive hijinks is a much bigger deal than the 360 fans around here seem willing to admit. It may well be the case that the vast majority of 360 owners have harddrives at this point; I don't really know what the statistics are. But frankly, it doesn't matter. Microsoft has taken a fundamental piece of the previous generation's hardware, and reduced it to an add-on. As a result, developers cannot rely on the harddrive as a system component. If you think this has no effect on design decisions, you are sorely mistaken. Also, all this mud-slinging based on the extras that the next-gen consoles will have strikes me as extremely silly. Are you guys honestly buying a next-gen console to be able to surf the net, display pictures, or download movies, TV shows, and music? I certainly hope not. I already have a laptop for that. I, for one, am buying a next-gen gaming console to be able to play next-gen games. Everything else is secondary. That is why I whole-heartedly agree with buster8695, when he says that the real console wars can't start until well after the PS3 and the Wii have launched, and we have a chance to see what all three systems have to offer. What should be our primary concern here is the game libraries that the three consoles will support. Which system has the best game library is impossible to determine this early, and will ultimately be nothing more than personal opinion. If you enjoy the 360's current game library, that's fine. Just bear in mind that there are plenty of us who don't.
