Sony: XBL HDTV "a disservice"

SCEA's Dave Karraker says he'd be upset upon hearing about Microsoft's recently revealed multimedia download scheme if he owned an HDD-less Xbox 360.

Last night, Microsoft unveiled an ambitious plan to make available a sizeable offering of high-definition movies and television shows on Xbox Live on demand. As is becoming common in the increasingly acrimonious next-gen console war, one side was quick to respond with a scathing criticism of the other's latest move.

"I think they are doing a disservice to their consumer base because they are ignoring all those people who bought the Core system," said Sony Computer Entertainment America PR chief Dave Karraker, referring to the lower-end $299 Xbox 360 system. Said system does not come with the attachable hard drive necessary to store content downloaded off of Xbox Live.

Naturally, SCEA's head spokesman pointed out that both the $499 and $599 models of the PlayStation 3 have hard drives built in. "We would never segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn't buy the top of the line system," said Karraker. The HDD-equipped premium Xbox 360 costs $399, and the hard drive itself costs $99.99 when bought separately.

The executive also pointed out the fact that 7 gigabytes of the Xbox 360's 20-gigabyte hard drive are taken up by preloaded content, such as the game Hexic, and its operating system. He did not point out the fact that nearly 4GB of said content is deletable. Since only test units have been made available to the press, it is unknown how much of the final retail PS3s' hard drives, which weigh in at 20GB or 60GB, will be taken up by their operating systems and preloaded content.

Microsoft plans on launching its video and movie service on November 22. Sony executives said at its 2006 Gamers Day that the company will eventually tap its vast library of music, video, and movie content to distribute online to PS3s, but they won't say when. "We haven't announced when other entertainment content, beyond games, will be available from the PlayStation Store," said Karraker.

Hmm, i distinctly remember the word "choice" from Microsoft. You wanna view HDTV stuff, then buy a HDD, you made the "choice" to buy a core system because you didn't think you needed one. Well now you do - so buy a frikkin drive. You had the choice at the time to decline the normal version of xbox, and now you have the choice to get the HDD and view the new media features it is offering

Sony needs to know when to shut up and let their superior competitors announce things... If Sony keeps commenting on stuff that Microsoft keeps doing its going to do nothing more then make them look like a gigantic ass... This doesn't surprise me at all sadly

Pretty weak attempt to bash Microsoft on Sony's part IMO. Do they honestly think 'nit-picking' at the smallest of things are gonna detract a customer from buying a 360?. I think not.

The point of the options are if you want the extras you pay extra if you just want games you can just have games simple not forcing anything on everyone.

This is getting as bad as all the political mud-raking on TV! Well Sony, at least MS doesn't make us pay for the hardware regardless or whether we want to the service! People who own Core systems and want to download movies can upgrade their systems....people who don't won't needto worry about vestigial hardware and burning excess money. What percentage of PS3 owners do you think will really get their full money's worth from all that hardware??

"Yeah, stupid Sony giving us console that is $600 when it's a fully-functioning computer that runs Linux and is the equivelant to a $1500 desktop(w/o a monitor). And not to mention that Blu-ray players alone cost 800 bucks." ____________________________________________________ I already have a desktop AND a laptop, and I couldn't POSSIBLY care less about Beta-Ray. I and most gamers just wanted a gaming machine that allows you to hook up online. But NOOOOOOO, $ony decides that I need Blu-Max, because UMD wasn't a big enough failure. God forbid that they made that optional like the HD-DVD, and made a console available that would be 200 bucks cheaper. Stupid $ony? No, $tupid consumer for swallowing that crap.

Isn't it impossible to get on Live if you don't have a hard drive anyway? If you don't have a hard drive, then you can't get on Live, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Sour Grapes ..... msft beat sony to HD movies and TV shows .... and sony also being a movie studio should just be ashamed of that. And thats all this is. Anyone who wants this badly enough, will buy a Hard Drive (if they bought the Core system). So please, its not like its not an option at all.

Sony is hilarious. Do they not understand that those people who bought the $299 version have the option of spending $100 and getting a hard drive that snaps right on? Are they that ignorant at Sony or are they hoping that people are that ignorant so they can bullcrap them?

mexitalian Sony sucks. They segregated a WHOLE community of gamers by not including high def cables with their "high def" system. But lets get back to better issues...how bout that GoW???? The HDMI cable will be for 1080p output only. If you are THAT upset about it, consider the fact that a TV that puts out that resolution is owned by people who have the money to spare. You people need to stop looking at it from a "Fan boy" point of view. They will all sell out initially, who gives a crap about which console has a bigger E-peen. As for digital content in HD, if you got a Ps3, rent a friggin Blu-Ray DVD. If you got an Xbox, buy the HD-DVD player and rent a friggin HD-DVD. If you don't want to do any of the above, then don't...and to whoever talked about Sony making and breaking promises..... obviously never used Windows. Saying Sony took the idea from MS....I've had on-demand movies through my cable company since before MS was trying to patch M.E. I love my 360, I love my X.B.L.. but smack... knocking Sony and it's online gaming... "Since May 1st 2004 SOCOM II has averaged 373,000 player hours per day. By itself, SOCOM II is logging more player hours daily than ALL Xbox titles worldwide." One game did more online business then the original Xbox as a whole could muster. Take away all those Silver additions on the 360, and all they have is a formula that works and a year head start with no competition.

Remember what Microsoft once famously said: "Leader's don't react." Sony has reacted several times to moves by Microsoft. Dave Karraker needs to be informed that CORE owners can buy an HDD if they wish. Last night I realised the greatness of this new Microsoft service when it occured to me they had come up with a way of delivering HD content without the need for purchasing an external HD unit or BLURAY for that matter. The fact that HD movies of 90 minutes are able to delivered in only 4.7Gb of data highlights exactly how BLOATED BLURAY is (and HDD-DVD for that matter). Remember that DUAL-LAYERED and DOUBLE-SIDED STANDARD DVD can store close to 18Gb..... Keep that in mind, because it's important to understanding why Microsoft went with a cheaper standard DVD drive in their machines.

I don't really agree with him, as those who bought the Core 360 knew what they were doing. But, TBH, I'll download movies for my portable and such, but for a 360, an obviously non portable device, this is a waste of resources on Microsoft's part. If I were Microsoft, I would be spending every penny on debunking the PS3 and Wii at this point, not giving people useless movies. Sony or Nintendo will win this gen, but it'll be closer than before.

"Isn't "innovating" a six degree motion controller a disservice to PS3 owners who would like to have more degrees of motion sensitivity?! Darnit Nintendo Wii! Get in there and say something you pansies!" Yeah, all that was sarcasm. This is very petty by Sony. Just a sad attempt at trying to down other systems when you're unsure of the potency of your own. Just worry about your own issues. *cough* BluRay/Production speed/novelty controller*cough*

People who have the core system aren't going to be interested in downloading anything anyways. Whats the difference between downloading movies/episodes and demos? Sony is just trying to make their system sound sweeter than xbox 360. At least Microsoft is actually doing the things it says it is, unlike Sony who makes empty promises.

I think Sony should wait 'til their console is out to be passing judgement. Sony hasn't had a chance to prove their stuff against Microsoft consoles yet, (Remember...both the Xbox and 360 came out after PS2, says something for longevity really), if they're that confident, let actions speak louder than words!

Well, the most suck part of this thing, is probably that the videos become unusable after 24 hours. I don't care if it's a low price, that's really crappy to be honest, and I would never buy something digital if I didn't own it afterwards..

Oh dear. A Sony exec dissing MS. Big surprise. Did he point out that Core owners who decide they want to download movies etc can simply buy an HDD? No. MS has hardly segregated people by giving them a choice. I'm getting so sick of this mud-slinging from both sides. Only Nintendo is staying out of it and letting their hardware do the talking, which I personally think shows a lot of confidence.

Considering that less than 20% of all 360s sold were Core units, it's likely that those folks don't even subscribe to Live or own an HDTV because they're settling for the cheapie system. If they want to d/l hi-def content on a $299 machine they can spring for the HDD if they want it. $399 is less than $499.

It's called a choice, idiot. Like the one you didn't give by forcing Blu-Ray on everyone. People who bought the core 360 were well aware that they wouldn't get the full advantages of XBL. But they have the OPTION to upgrade or the OPTION to not. The people who don't care as much for online (yes they do exist, in large numbers) had the option to not get it. But the people who don't give a crap about Blu-Ray still have to pay for sony's new version of the UMD disaster.
