Sony: XBL HDTV "a disservice"

SCEA's Dave Karraker says he'd be upset upon hearing about Microsoft's recently revealed multimedia download scheme if he owned an HDD-less Xbox 360.

Last night, Microsoft unveiled an ambitious plan to make available a sizeable offering of high-definition movies and television shows on Xbox Live on demand. As is becoming common in the increasingly acrimonious next-gen console war, one side was quick to respond with a scathing criticism of the other's latest move.

"I think they are doing a disservice to their consumer base because they are ignoring all those people who bought the Core system," said Sony Computer Entertainment America PR chief Dave Karraker, referring to the lower-end $299 Xbox 360 system. Said system does not come with the attachable hard drive necessary to store content downloaded off of Xbox Live.

Naturally, SCEA's head spokesman pointed out that both the $499 and $599 models of the PlayStation 3 have hard drives built in. "We would never segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn't buy the top of the line system," said Karraker. The HDD-equipped premium Xbox 360 costs $399, and the hard drive itself costs $99.99 when bought separately.

The executive also pointed out the fact that 7 gigabytes of the Xbox 360's 20-gigabyte hard drive are taken up by preloaded content, such as the game Hexic, and its operating system. He did not point out the fact that nearly 4GB of said content is deletable. Since only test units have been made available to the press, it is unknown how much of the final retail PS3s' hard drives, which weigh in at 20GB or 60GB, will be taken up by their operating systems and preloaded content.

Microsoft plans on launching its video and movie service on November 22. Sony executives said at its 2006 Gamers Day that the company will eventually tap its vast library of music, video, and movie content to distribute online to PS3s, but they won't say when. "We haven't announced when other entertainment content, beyond games, will be available from the PlayStation Store," said Karraker.

PhoenixBurner2 your statement on comparing the systems is flawed the only difference in the hardware is the 60gb harddrive that's all everything else is BS. But I give you credit since you did not metion any specifics. Regardless of how you see it, would you be saying the same thing if it was the 360 with all the hardware for $600. Would you be defending it or would you be trashing it and saying it's too expensive?

Simply put this Sony Rep like all the rest are scared/nervous about the PS3 Launch and also wants to give Microsoft some bad publicity because it's all they got nothing else. Their games are not that great and the system it self it's not that great it's good but not great, most of these people lined up to get one are going to re-sell them on Ebay, LOL it's too funny!! Then they lie to their own consumer base (PS fans), the worst part about it is that PS Fans keep taking it and loving it....LOL

Here's a look at the future: Microsoft announces latest update on XBL adds internet browsing capabilities. Sony reponds it's a disservice to XBOX 360 owners who aren't connected to the internet to have to download this update to be able to use the internet browser.

"Why does Gamespot print this as news? It's not news it's someone's biased view on somthing " Its just news! I mean, it just so happens that newsis as crap as this. News is mostly negative, and basically you see MORE news from sony than any other company. With the news from Nintendo this year, its been - Ds lite, more games, revolution changed to wii, wii price... With the 360 its been the exclusive titles, price drop, bundles, 1080p, that buggy firmware which made hackers' xbox's die.. With the ps3 its just a constant barriage of delays, bluray diodes, no price drop, poor psp sales, lack of interesting launch titles, etc etc etc.. and then the Sony reps spout out things like this.. Its not gamespots fault that Sony had some bad news around them, but also had the idiots who represent sony say stuff like this. Nintendo can admit that the name"wii" sounds dull, microsoft admit they have had problems but are working them out and replacing this with more offers, more games, more content and more stuff to MORE users around the world. Sony don't admit anything, they seem to arrogantly spout out stuff like this all the time. Gamespot can't print out good news about the ps3 and the psp, because there is none to be had as of yet... Its all the same, the wii had the name changed- people said it will suck, the 360 had a poor launch, everyone said it will suck. The ps3 has a massive price, poor launch games (compared to whats avaliable now, for less) people wait for sony reps to say something positive.. But it seems all they care about is movies, movies, other consoles faults and giant enemy crabs ;) Once the console kicks off, the news will reverse into "delayed titles" etc, and stuff like that. Its a shame sony reps are not worth their weight, at all. I mean, they suck! False baseless accusations. At least Nintendo and Microsoft can spout out some faults of other consoles with faults and strengths of their own. Sony just spout out the faults of others, and believe they are something very special. And ignore everything bad that they have ever done (like this interview suggests). :(

TavL.ok Has it correct. Presenting your users with choice makes all of the difference. I find it kind of humorous that a Sony exec says "we would never cut our consumers out of an experieince with the low end model"...um, until recently you weren't going to put HDMI support on the low end PS3 until people just about exploded and universal criticism and fan revolt led to chnage in your decision. You even admitted it was in response to fan desire, so you can't go back and say we wern't going to shaft consumers now. Does this exempt M$ from the criticism. No, but that fact that the X360 is completely modular seems more intelligent by the day. If I want a total HD experience with VG, HD-DVD, etc I can get it for about the same cost as a PS3, with more games. If I just wan't a VG experience, I can do that too, for much cheaper. If you are a middle of the row, and want to check out some HD movies online first, you can. I had no intention of buying the HD-DVD attachment, but if I "rent" a couple of mives and I really dig the experience, hey more money for M$.

Yeah exactly people who didn't get the HD aren't dumb they know they don't want to save movies and demos, and besides what I think everyone that I know that has a 360 bought the premium bundle. So that's a very small percent of 360 owners that don't have HDs.

again with the arrogance of sony... I hope that piece of you know what reads this little discussion goin on here. Just like the guy below me... people like choice. MS advertised the 360 as a media machine... its not just for games... And do you notice that you dont see microsoft execs doggin on sony for a decision they've made. This guy needs to take a hike... I hope someone finds a way to sue sony for saying that just so that guy gets fired. Both companies are in this to make money, and appease gamers... thus far they've both done that... leave it at that...

Sony doesn't get it. People like choice. I've got the whole HDTV cable package going at home. I can record in HiDef on a HD hard drive that has MUCH MORE space than Microsoft or Sony offers for either of their consoles. In other words, consumers like me don't need to turn the Xbox 360 into the central entertainment device in our homes. I bought the 360 primarily for games and LIVE gaming. If I choose to add an HD-DVD for 360, it's totally up to me and I like having that option.

Why does Gamespot print this as news? It's not news it's someone's biased view on somthing someone else is doing that might affect what it is there doing. I'm sure there are loads of people who think it's intresting but positive stuff is'nt really news nor are fans saying they support sony. So in theory if Tom Cruise was to say he thought XBL HDTV was "a disservice" then it would get covered over say the average person. In short this is'nt even news worthy, that and most of what Jack Thompson thinks.

Plainly and simply, if you are a Core player who wants to join Live and download movies and the like, there is nothing preventing you from doing so except perhaps a money shortage. Here's a question. How many Core buyers still essentially have Cores and how many have "caught up", so to speak?

BTW, 360 has been out for a year now, of course they'll have more games. PS2 has more games than anyone. And when 360 released, they had 18 games at launch. PS3 has 15 or so. I don't think that's too far off. Get your stuff together.

how does this moron(sony exec in article) figure its a dis service. if people dont ahve online or are not interested in it(just like high def) they are not forced to purchase it. You dont need a ahrd drive to save games, the memory card will work just fine. However if the consumer WANTS to start saving music, downloading games, music, videos, etc they have a choice of getting the 99 dollar hard drive, but they are NOT FORCED to pay for it if they dotn want it. This simple thing right here is why Sony is failing and MS is succeeding. They understand consumers want choice and not all consumers have HD... nothing but a smart business decission on MS's part. Whats smart about Sony's launch?

Jeezus Christ Guys! These guys are not biased on systems. Listen to Hotspot or watch On The Spot. They show that ALL EDITORS at Gamespot are interested in ALL SYSTEMS!!! Why you ask??? THEY LOVE GAMES!!! what you need to compare is if your interested in a gaming system.. ATM and for quite a while XBOX 360 has .... MORE GAMES!!!! They have 2 of the most sought after shooters next to HL2 (which is coming to BOTH CONSOLES BTW) HALO FRANCHISE and GEARS OF WAR (+ what will soon be the sequals) they arent biased towards Microsoft... They are just reacting to Microsofts better position ATM.. i mean what did you expect from a SOFTWARE company VS HARDWARE company? maybe the ps3 can do more... maybe... but Microsoft ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE A SOFTWARE COMPANY!!!!!! translation... THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT GAMES!! NOT JUST high def formats or sony's most important goal... expecially considering their losses atm.. IS TO SELL HARDWARE! i mean cmon... look at MS's whole marketing scheme with the original XBOX! They charged what costed them a considerable loss (as compared to making any profit at all) just so we could buy an XBOX. Why? So we would buy their games! Why? Because they LOVE THEIR GAMES!!! go have a look at the MS line up... besides right now (it is unfair when SONY HAVE NO GAMES ON THE SHELF!) HALO 3 HALO WARS GEARS OF FN WAR!! VIVA PINATA FIFA GTA4... specifically ep 1 & 2 (sucked in sony, me and most of my mates bought a PS2 for this franchise... IDIOTS!!) ALAN WAKE BIOSHOCK a cheap way to make games for ppl (XBL package) i mean these guys want anyone and everyone to make games for their console... Sony care about its biggest market ..... JAPAN.. good for Japan... bad for me! (Aussie - plus i have relatives who were murdered in World War 2... BY THE JAPANESE - this is not to say that current Japanese ppl are to blame at all, but it still hurts and leaves a distrustful taste in my stomach for them.. this is actually proven by the origanal 'announcements' of the PS3 by Sony leader - most of which is not coming to fruitiion... compared to MICROSOFTS honest approach!

To everyone out there, I think the main idea behind this "disservice" is that MS hasn't pushed the bar since they introduced installed memory and XBox Live. While these were great accomplishments and certainly separated them from the other consoles, they haven't done anything new since then. MS's thing is giving the consumer the option to upgrade or not which is a double-edged sword. They always say, "If ppl want it, they'll buy the Gold Live pack..." "If ppl want it, they'll buy the additional gigs of memory..." Someone in MS HAD to have known that Sony would be having a built-in high def drive when they were developing the 360 and they simply said, "Well, if ppl want it, they'll buy the add on". All Sony is doing is setting the standard for everyone. They are saying "This is the future" and the consumer can either get on now, or buy a system that needs add ons. I'm ready to get on - Are you?

I agree about Gamespot being more lean toward 360 and harsh and more critical when it comes to PS3 (even very minor issues), i am sure alot of people noticed that from many of the recent articles. But then again, indeed it is still the best gaming website there is, with the best developed community, even with Giants like ign-gamespy there is no match period.

GS does lean to the 360 in almost all cases. This in my opinion is a pretty biased site and has been for sometime, However still the best gaming news site out there. There are alot of MS fanboys out there reading every artical that comes out about PS3...Good to see that there are keeping a close eye on the stiff competition. Or you fanboys are just trying find anything you can to convince yourself that you didn't jump the gun and bought the right system...lol

By the way, whoever made that random post about 360 owners having to buy the HD-DVD add-on to play future Xbox games is an idiot. Learn the facts behind what you are dissing before you diss it. Microsoft has stated and it has been confirmed that the HD-DVD add on is for movies only, and will not support HD-DVD games. All of Microsoft's games this generation are going to continue to be on DVD.

How is it a disservice? Last time I checked the HDTV service is NOT MANDITORY!!! Mr. Karraker, If someone wants the service then they can get an HDD. Besides, if they have a core system anyway they would probably be *better off* when the higher capacity HDD is available. They would end up saving money! How? Because all of us who purchased the 360 with the 20 Gb HDD will probably end up getting a larger one later...

You would really think with the launch of the PS3 being so close that Sony would worry about it's own business instead of trying to downplay everything MS does. If the PS3 was all that, I wouldn't think Sony would feel the need to always try & downplay everything that the 360 does.

yawannataco No what MS is doing is very smart and they are not trying to keep up with Sony in this area but have surpassed them. The idea of dowloadable Television programs etc. was actually mentioned during the earlier days of Xbox Live even with the original Xbox but the hardrive was too small. Microsoft has always said that XBL was an evolving online enviroment. Most of the console companies will be cutting their costs by providing more services to consumers at a premium price. Microsoft started with the HD videos and movie Trailers and have presented the fact that Blu-ray DVD and HD-DVD or not the only way to go for HD entertainment you have a 3rd choice and if you own the premium 360 system you are set to go. Chances are if you own the core sytsem this wasn't a feature you wanted in the first place.

since when are they concerned with xbox 360 owners. they call it a diservice to the core owners. i dont think so. the owners of the core system can upgrade at anytime and buy the harddrive. they are not concerned they are just envious of microsoft and the xbox 360. why else would they complain. i think this new xbox live feature is cool and innovative. xbox live keeps getting better. i wont be surprised if i see sony copying microsoft in the future by implementing that same feature.

Sony has to try and point blame at other companies, mainly due (I feel) to the fact that their stocks have taken a hit. Many non Sony fans are yelling about the batteries in the controllers (how they are not rechargeable), or the lack of an HDTV cable in the box (need to pay $50 for one), or the price point of the system (which most people paid $500-$1K on eBay for XB360's, so... there are people who will drop $600 on a system). Sony needs to show others that not all consoles are perfect, and I think this is one way for them to try and get people to ease up a little. Now I feel that this console war is far from over, since the Wii and PS3 are not out yet. I love the new content on XB Live, and I am hoping MS decides to either come out with a larger HDD, or a USB storage option. XB Live has really grown, and I think it will just get more successful. Now, if I can only find the guy who invented "micro transactions", and send him to jail for extortion. The Wii has some great concepts going for it, and I hope it is more successful than the GC, just the thought of online classic downloads is a plus, but I can get old NES games at a flea market. Either way, I think Sony needs to listen to the consumer, as they are the ones who are supposed to support the system. I feel XB360 is a launch that went very well, and was really successful. At least in the States.

A "disservice" would be selling wireless controllers in the store. The PS3 owners with the cheaper system won't be able to use them. It's the same thing. Sony has really dug themselves a huge hole here.

Here we go again with complains from sony. Anyways, I like to have options on what i want to buy, instead of forcing me to buy a game system that comes with stuff that I'm not even going to use. The reason why I buy a game system is to play GAMEs, not watch movies or anything else. Also the service of XBL is really great for only $50 a year and I can see how MS is trying to expand it buy allowing people to chose what they want to buy and what not.

"We would never segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn't buy the top of the line system," Hang on, Hang on, Hang one..... am i right in thinking (sorry if someones said this before me) that the cheaper PS3 does'nt have HDMI outpt.... Not only does this go massivly against what this guy says, but it also puts the ball back in MS court as at least you can by the HDD space.... im fairly sure the cheaper PS3 will never be hd ready.

What's funny is that Sony complains about the core system, yet I haven't heard ONE complaint from a core system owner.

Im a Sony fanboy and I agree that Microsoft is not paying any attention to consumers who bought the core 360. However Sony SHOULD keep their mouths shut and quiet storm the next gen market. Sony shouldnt be talking trash when their system hasnt even hit the streets yet. Just let the systems do the talking.

'The executive also pointed out the fact that 7 gigabytes of the Xbox 360's 20-gigabyte hard drive are taken up by preloaded content, such as the game Hexic, and its operating system.' ^ Alright that is a valid fact 'He did not point out the fact that nearly 4GB of said content is deletable.' ^ Also a valid fact... but did that sentence really need to be there? GS (at least to me) seems to lean to the 360 side of the fence which is kinda defeating the point of reviewing games for all consoles... Especially when some of the staff seems to play favs... But whatever... But, also, i have to say that i hate it when the SCEA says pointless statements that changes no ones opinions and only hurt themselves in the process. Tards... lol

Sony has this thing ...I dont know if its the US side or the Japan Side..but they have this flaw where they think they can just call everything bad and a "Disservice" or "Lacking" when they are going about doing that thing that they comment on Even Worst that then Competition Sony states that that Wii is only about "GamePlay and is dissatisfying to consumers with its low visual appeal"...Yet Sony releases games such as ...hmm..I dont know...Genji...which lack in the gameplay department yet have great visuals. Sony also complains about online services of XBL and how it costs to much money...Then turn around and charge money for...CARS in a game...for CARS..and not just a few cents...they charge more than a Dollar for a Digital Car...Not even hotwheels are as much as the cars in Granturismo HD Sony then turns to lying and brainwashing...releasing "Fact Sheets" that highlight everyones flaws and euphimising their own flaws..such as high price and lack of supply. Sony is funny when it comments on the progress of other company products and never realive the flaws of its own products. IF the Blu Ray Diodes on the PS3 fail..I guess Sony will comment on how the Wii uses Double A batteries and how thats a "Disservice" Sony...please...keep your yape closed.. With subpar game reviews BEFORE that console even launches..I dont think they should be talking...
