Sony: XBL HDTV "a disservice"

SCEA's Dave Karraker says he'd be upset upon hearing about Microsoft's recently revealed multimedia download scheme if he owned an HDD-less Xbox 360.

Last night, Microsoft unveiled an ambitious plan to make available a sizeable offering of high-definition movies and television shows on Xbox Live on demand. As is becoming common in the increasingly acrimonious next-gen console war, one side was quick to respond with a scathing criticism of the other's latest move.

"I think they are doing a disservice to their consumer base because they are ignoring all those people who bought the Core system," said Sony Computer Entertainment America PR chief Dave Karraker, referring to the lower-end $299 Xbox 360 system. Said system does not come with the attachable hard drive necessary to store content downloaded off of Xbox Live.

Naturally, SCEA's head spokesman pointed out that both the $499 and $599 models of the PlayStation 3 have hard drives built in. "We would never segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn't buy the top of the line system," said Karraker. The HDD-equipped premium Xbox 360 costs $399, and the hard drive itself costs $99.99 when bought separately.

The executive also pointed out the fact that 7 gigabytes of the Xbox 360's 20-gigabyte hard drive are taken up by preloaded content, such as the game Hexic, and its operating system. He did not point out the fact that nearly 4GB of said content is deletable. Since only test units have been made available to the press, it is unknown how much of the final retail PS3s' hard drives, which weigh in at 20GB or 60GB, will be taken up by their operating systems and preloaded content.

Microsoft plans on launching its video and movie service on November 22. Sony executives said at its 2006 Gamers Day that the company will eventually tap its vast library of music, video, and movie content to distribute online to PS3s, but they won't say when. "We haven't announced when other entertainment content, beyond games, will be available from the PlayStation Store," said Karraker.

@cofn42 I don't know what you're smoking about 5 gigs being not even the size of a DVD video. A DVD has a max storage of about 4.7 gigs, so according to your logic all our movies "magically" fit onto the DVD even though they're bigger than the actual space. Wtf?

Well, no one got a core, so we're fine. And for all the people that did, good job, you won't download HD movies onto your xbox anytime soon.

tonygregory You are a bitter XBox Fanboy. Pay more for the Same Thing??? My 360 Bill looks like this. $399 360 $ 99 Live $49 Every Year (Year 2 in November) $199 HD-DVD $100 XBox1 Gamesaves XSATA + Memory Cards. For XBox1 Saves ----------------------------- $797 Thats $800 Total PS3 Base model is $499 The PS3 Premium is $599 ($600) but that comes with built in wireless and a 60Gig HardDrive. Xbox360 Wireless adapter is another $99. Wow... Now we are getting damn close to $900 and I only have a 20 Gig HardDrive that is always getting too full. Has Proven Online?? Online Play has been around for Years Dude. It is not that Complex. Thats just Microsofts BallyHoo Line to Justify Charging $50 a year for it. The Rest of your comment about Resolution are simply not True. Don't take BS from the Internet and Take it as Truth Dude. So they cut out Dual HDMI, Damn and I bought that 2nd $2000 TV just for That... (thats Sarcasm) Both Machines Use the Same Processor The 360 has 3 Running around 3 Ghz, The PS3 has 1 at 3 Ghz and 7 other Processors Running at about 1 Ghz. The Computational Power is very Close on Both. The PS3 has the Advantage of 1 Year in the World of Technology, that 1 Year does make a difference. Both have 512 or ram, though the PS3 is preset at 256 system 256 Video, of course each can access each others an equal split is Optimal anyways. Both will be Quite Capable. The PS3 has already been shown to Run The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with Slight Improvements in the Background Textures, The PS3 Version has eliminated the Pop Up from the Background Scenes. Most of All the PS3 Version runs at a more solid Frame rate. You are Reading Lies that are blasted all over the Internet by Microsoft to mislead people into thinking the 360 is more powerful, it is not. I own a 360 and I have several games that Look great but the Frame Rate chugs in certain situations. But to say the 360 is Cheaper is a complete Lie. At least that is the way Microsoft has structured the Pricing. They just wanted the $299 for Display and Argument Purposes. The $299 version is unusable. Where are you going to save your Game? $50 Memory Card is your cheapest option but it will Fill up Lightning Quick. If you Want Online or to be able to Play XBox1 Games then You MUST HAVE THE HARDDRIVE. I have Never meet or even talked to a person that has a core system and did not add the HardDrive. My Point is the XBox is $399 not $299. Then when you add $49 a year for XBox Live then 2 Years into the System you have equaled the $499 Playstation. Don't be a Fanboy... Be a GameBoy... No Pun intended on the GameBoy. I support Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. But don't mislead people.

that's dumb. we all bought the system to play games. the movies and tv shows is an added bonus. but the main reason we all bought a 360 core or premium is to play games. so i don't see how this is a disservice, some people like me could care less

Well just to give my two cents, Sony is right but their perspective is wrong, those who will want to use this feature are the crowd who got the premium. Also doesnt it make sense that if you have an HD tv to watch the movies on that you got the premium so you can play in HD, this is just an attempt by sony to Bash MS again (like when MS said they can do 1080p) since sony didnt do it first

Mkeegs79 "Seymour47 Wow, can you read? It doesnt state anything about the service. ITS TALKING ABOUT THE STORAGE MEDIA FOR THE SERVICE AND HOW PEOPLE WITH CORE SYSTEMS CANT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! Understand now? " ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, I understand. The fact is that Mr. Karraker is criticizing Microsoft for giving people to the choice to get the harddrive or not. Anyone that buys a 360 without the harddrive deserves no sympathy if they just realized that they can't download and store much without it. The fact is if someone bought the 360 without the harddrive they can go out and get one and not have to pay anything more than they would have initially paid. That makes this entire statement from Mr. Karraker pointless. Yes, they are delivering the media in such a way that it must be stored on the harddrive. How would Sony do it differently? Send them a CD?

Microsoft is 'doing a disservice' toward would-be HDTV and 360 owners by letting them, goodness forbid, have the OPTION to pay for a service they may or may not want. Meanwhile, Sony is providing their required, homebrew destroying firmware upgrades, just to make some games playable on their system, exclusively on their internet downloads system. At least the 360 owners can play their games while unconnected, and have a set date they'll be able to download things BESIDES games.

Sony is on crack. Wasn't the whole idea behind the Core System was that you get a cheaper console, but with less features? Oh, Sony, what saints you are, saying you'd never "segregate your consumers". Well, guess what, Sony, you are segregating the filthy rich, totally hardcore, "I play WoW from 11:00 pm to 5:00 am every day" consumers from the consumers who can't afford to lay down $500 for a new system (or who just have the common sense not to). Sony should just go back to making Walkmans if you ask me.

Sucks to be the person who bought the Core edition. Sony is just bashing Microsoft because it's actually a very smart move. Offering the movies over XBL requires a hard drive, something that people WILL buy just to watch the movies, that is if the movies and programs are desireable enough. Microsoft wins twice.

Another note, this news of movie downloads is new and people who might have loved this service are screwed if they purchased the core system. You fanboys take this all out of context. Its ridiculous. AGAIN Sony is ASKED questions what they think of the moves of their competition. Its nothing new but since you all hate Sony you will see things how you want and will bash it with clouded judgement!

Seymour said: "If you want to watch the HD content you can get the harddrive." Thats what hes getting at by saying its a disservice. If you want this content, the TV shows and movies and whatnot, you HAVE to have an HDD. So if you really want it and you dont have the HDD, your forced to buy it to take advantage of the feature your interested in because you bought a certain model that is incompatible. You get what im saying? Either way, i think it dosent really matter, im sure most people have the HDD anyway, but yes that is no reason to ignore those who dont have it, since a package was designed and sold without it. The real problem is HDD space for the 360. I play FFXI so i definitley wont be able to download this anytime soon. It dosent seem worth it though, to digitally have a copy of a movie for a limited time and have to pay for it.

Wow, what a suprise?! Sony once again proves it has some of the PR representives in this industry. You want to know what isn't fair? Paying 500-600 dollars for a console that is forcing you to use Blu Ray, which in turn raises the total cost of the system. How about that cheap knock-off of a controller called the "SixAxis" ? What isn't fair is that Sony didn't re-design their controller like their competitors have, leaving us with a controller that feels cheap, has unresponsive buttons, and is downright awEful for FPS games. Atleast MS gives you the option of having a wireless controller and harddrive included with their console, not to mention a wireless headset and free online time included in the premium package. Lets see, for over $700 US currency, I can have a "state of the art" blu ray player that also happens to play games, an extra controller that shouldnt cost more than $25 dollars and better not, and a launch game that is most likely a port of a title that has already been released on the PC and 360 and probably plays much better due to a mouse/keyboard or superior XBOX 360 controller. Yes, PS3 will have good games, but Sony has seriously lost touch with their consumers and themselves. The lower middle class will not be able to afford this system and that makes up the largest percentage of videogame consumers. Sony needs to re-think their plans for this generation as it's seriously time for some much needed damage control. and Resistance: Fall of Man makes nowhere near as good use of the Unreal 3 engine as Gears of War does.....sorry launch faithful.

Not much you can do without the HDD, can't even go on live can you? Besides, these shows and movies will take up a ton of space, which is going to make the current HDD pointless. Comes down to this, fanboys, PLEASE STFU!!!! and do0n't try to understand why game companies do or say what they do or say. Just play the games or not cause frankly, your opinions sometimes give me a headache....

He is their rival but instead he took a keen approach by mentioning how the core 360 owners are left in the dust. That is all. In no way he has to say anything good. The only thing thats a "disservice" to gammers is the PS3 period. HD DVD add on is just that a choice. The 20 gig PS3 model has some of the same features as the 60 gig model but, in reality there going to abandon the 20 gig model as soon as there sales are good. This is the same company that told the gamming public last year after E#. "The 2 SKU idea just confuses consumers" and look now there doing it.

Lmao omg this is sooo funny. Im sorry but most people with a core system went and got themselves a hard drive. As for the space on the hard drive taken by videos and stuff..most of that can be deleted and most of your space is gotten back. Also the operating system isnt on the hard drive like he claimed..cuz if it was then people with a core system wouldnt be able to play. I love it when Sony exects have no f***ing clue what there talking about...he should just be worrying about the PS3 launch..and what else there gonna lie about to try and sell systems..since most people have gotten past the fact that all there awesome graphic videos shown were actually CGI and none of the games look much better then a 360 game...and haha Gears of War looks better then anything shown on the so called most powerful gaming console this genration.

Hey Red calm down. If someone says Oblivion is a crappy role-playing game, then guess what.... it is. To them anyway. If you enjoy it, who cares what some nay sayers thinks about it. I played Oblivion, and it was alright. Can't we all just get along. Why do we spend out time flaming and showing scorn for others. Honestly, I view other people's drive by game reviews (ie "It's a Halo Killer.... or " This game sux" .... or "yet another piece of drivel churned out by EA") the same way I view Britney Spears divorcing Kevin Fedderwhatever. Who the *(^* cares? If they don't have time to write a decent review and articulate their thoughts, then they don't deserve for you to read anything they write.

It seems to me that Sony just doesn't wanna stay quiet. Why do they have to comment on this, they don't even have a proven marketplace yet !!. Just prove to me you can do the same thing Microsoft can and then you can talk. And it looks like a good idea to me, I don't plan to ever bye a movie or show but, hey the option is their. And the people that bye the "cheaper" Xbox 360, its $200 less than Sony's "cheaper" console version, so thats almost like a Wii console in and of itself.

Let me get this straight. The Sony dipwads are criticizing Microsoft because they are offering HDTV downloads? How is it a disservice when it's an optional thing? If you want to watch the HD content you can get the harddrive. If they were forcing everyone to get the HD to do anything on the 360 from now on, now that would be a disservice. This is just an option that people can pick up if they want it or not. If Sony wants to survive in a world where everything you say is heard by millions of people, they need to tar, feather, draw and quarter every exec or public relations person they have right now.
