Sony Will Soon Require PS5 Support For PS4 Games - Report

Any games sent for certification after July 13 will need to support PS5 in order to launch.

31 Comments

Developers planning to submit PS4 games for certification after July 13 will be forced to ensure that the game also runs on Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 5, according to a new report.

The requirement has been added to Sony's internal partner website and its hosted developer documentation, which has been seen by Eurogamer. Games sent to Sony for certification ahead of release after July 13 will need to ensure that they are not only compatible with PS5 hardware, but also support as-of-yet unannounced features of the console's design.

Sony notes in the documentation that it is planning to get in contact with developers soon regarding testing procedures for this classification. Games that are certified for PS5 will also need to remain so, with any patches required to satisfy the same cross-generational hardware specifications. Games released prior to this deadline will not need to conform to this with new patches, but Sony states that it will be "strongly recommended".

It's worth noting that Sony has not detailed its backwards-compatibility plans beyond a mention that PS4 titles were currently undergoing testing for compatibility. Back in March, Mark Cerny explained that backwards-compatible titles will make use of the additional processing power to run at higher resolutions and frame rates, but that any compatibility issues will require the original developers to solve.

This approach seems different to that of Microsoft, who has committed to having all Xbox One titles support backwards-compatibility with the Xbox Series X at launch. This includes Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles that are already playable on the Xbox One. In addition to support, Microsoft is also using system-level enhancements to add features like HDR to titles that launched without it, and without the need from additional work from its developers.

Sony is hosting a PS5 event on June 4 focused on next-gen games--the first notable event for the console since the stream GDC presentation in March.

So when I boot up my PS5 and my PSN account shows all the games across the screen is it going to denote which ones will work correctly and which ones won't? Thoughts...

Wish we could skip the improved resolutions and just run the older games at higher framerates with more graphical features.

Why should they have require? Shouldn't the PS5 be designed to do it seemlesly? Something isn't right here.

Lol. This is like saying, Sony should be creating the patch updates for Grand Theft Auto, instead of Rockstar.

@rasterror: This is the same approach Xbox started with. They had to test the games and optimize them for better performance. I wonder why people seem to forget that. They praised Xbox when they started, yet Sony gets questioned.

@psychomantisiii: That's because the 360 and Xbox One are on 2 completely different architectures. The PS4 and PS5 are both in X86. That's like seeing if a computer with a Core i5 could run a program that ran on a pentium 4.

@psychomantisiii:

Not the same.

Xbox mipmap modded Xbox OG/360 game and wrapped'em with a VM. PS1~5 run games natively.

MS brought Hyper-V and VM to Xbox in 2016. XboxOS and Win10Core are both VMs. Those older games are games-wrapped-with-VM and will work on future hardware.
* Rumor says SeriesXOS is a WCOS.

I thought PS4core and PS4Pro core would make things work (slightly) smoothly and if Sony stayed AMD FOREVER, you might end up... still, not possible to keep ALL your games due to hardware architecture changes and software deprecations (not even PC == native execution can do that). Judging by the news... Sony will require devs's help again for PS6, imo.

What??? Shouldn't this have been a conversation & demand months ago? Sounds like Sony is behind, unlike XBsX that have been working on it & backwards compatibility for years now! MS has done their job & they deserve praise and they sure as hell are getting my money. Anything that is pro-gamer is what my money will go towards!

With all the trickled news coming in, I grow prouder & prouder of XB by the day!

@just1mohr:

It's a lilo different on Xbox side.

PS1~5 use native execution.

Xbox since 2016 started with Hyper-V and VM. XboxOG/360 games are mipmap modded games with VM wrapped around it.

btw, Xbox has XPA, PSPA... not possible. I can continue playing Xbox game on my Xbox Handheld during a flight, cannot do the same with PS ecosystem.

@just1mohr: You sound like a shill. Or a very young child. Anyone who has been in this game for at least one generation will know not to trust what MS says about anything until you have that thing in your hands. For crying out loud, they already deceived us with that gameplay footage fiasco.

@Barighm: Naaaah, I am a young shill! Dude, I would buy the XBsX just for all the backwards compatibility alone & being able to play the games with better graphics and with no new exclusives. That is how much I want it & love it! I cannot lie to you, that is the truth & that is how I feel.

If Sony releases only upgrades to their existing titles (HZD, GOW, Spidy), I might not be that impressed, but if they release an action sci-fi MULTI-PLAYER exclusive in the order of Gears, Halo, & Titanfall then I may consider buying one earlier than later. I am on XB because of those type of games & the BC program!

@just1mohr: Well, if you had been putting it that way this whole time, then there is nothing to argue, but a lot of your other posts seem to mirror GamerBum's irrational fan-botting.

The jury is still out on which system will have better graphics. The reality is most of the better looking games this gen have generally been saddled by poor optimization save for exclusives, and we've hit the point of diminishing returns. I mean, if that Unreal 5 demo becomes the norm for the base PS5, then I couldn't care less what the XSX or even an RTX 3080ti can do. What are they going to do? Make photo realistic 1% more photo realistic?

@psychomantisiii: so let me get this straight a third party developer who recorded the footage after complying with microsofts request for gameplay footage of one of the "biggest" series they have made is let off the hook? yeah i still think microsoft is innocent and the blame lies squarely at ubisofts feet for their deceit.

@Barighm:

Sony is not a software company or a computer company Sony is Audio and Video. Sony’s big innovative PS5 feature is 3D audio.

That console box that comes with the PSVR is an audio receiver.

Tread carefully, Sony. With the demand for backwards compatibility being as high as it is, and Microsoft being so thorough about their own, I don't think you can afford to shrug this off and leave it "up to the developers" if you want to stay competitive.

2020, if Sony don't have a solution yet... Sony will need help again from devs for PS6.

PSPA isn't possible either. I can play my xbox game on my Xbox Handheld (not streaming to a phone) during a flight. PS ecosystem has no way to provide that.

@waltdawg443: What demand for BC? Literally all of the big three have described the demand as being on the very low side in general. MS is only acting like this is such a huge thing now because it's THE ONLY thing they have.

@Barighm: Exactly! People seem to forget how Microsoft deliberately his the BC numbers years ago because they were so low. Demand seems high, but it's just a minority of gamers that want it.

@dmdcsm: Sony have already confirmed that the PS5 is going to be back-compatible with most of the major PS4 titles, albeit they're being a bit vague about the details.

The real question is, what exactly do they mean by mandating "PS5 support"? Do they mean PS4 games released after July will be required to take full advantage of the PS5's features, or just that they'll have to run on the PS5, presumably running no differently to how they would on a PS4 Pro (outside of the faster load times courtesy of the SSD)?

@bigdavex:

Console PS1~5: native execution. Xbox Platform since 2016: Hyper-V and VM. Sony is a hardware company, MS is a software company.

* Even Uncharted, Zelda, Mario, BF, GTA, COD, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, Rainbow6, etc etc use MS's tech too.

Those are the difference.

If PS4 core and PS4Pro core cannot ease the pain (count me suprised), going forward? PS6/7/8? Even if Sony stayed with AMD forever... prob won't help imo.

Windows has pretty good API backward compatibility, still, native execution... games from 10 years ago might not work on today's hardware, unless if its a GaaS with good MAU. Software deprecation is also an issue.

@bigdavex: It seems like people ignore certain Sony announcements and only listen to what they can perceive as negative towards Sony. Xbox to the same approach with BC. Not every single past title is available on BC on Xbox. People don't realize that

Microsoft is mipmap modding and wrapping OG and 360 games with VM, Sony does none that.
PS1~5 is native execution, Xbox since 2016 is Hyper-V + VM (both XboxOS and Win10Core are VMs).
