Sony Will Shut Down PlayStation Vue Early Next Year

Won't someone take in the Vue?

Update: Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced PlayStation Vue will be shut down on January 30, 2020. "Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected," the studio wrote in a blog post. "Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business."

In the blog post, Sony makes no mention of attempting to sell PlayStation Vue to another company. It appears that if such a move was made, any attempts at a deal were unsuccessful. Sony has reassured that the PlayStation store and entertainment apps on PS4 consoles will continue to support purchases for movie and TV content. If you've bought a movie or TV series on PS4, you'll still be able to access it on the console even after January 30, 2020. Only PlayStation Vue is going out of service. Now Playing: Sony Wants To Sell Off PlayStation Vue - GS News Update

Sony is reportedly considering selling its streaming service, PlayStation Vue. The service was pitched as a low-cost replacement for cable subscriptions, offering bundles of TV networks at various tiered prices.

The Information reports that Sony is looking for a buyer for both the streaming technology and subscriber list, composed of roughly half a million households. The company has reportedly enlisted Merrill Lynch to help facilitate the sale, and has already approached the sports streaming platform FuboTV--though that company declined to purchase.

Sony has a number of hurdles to overcome that could be preventing a sale, however. Its content packages may not align with the interests of potential buyers, so any sale could require the purchaser to renegotiate the lineup. Sony also doesn't host any original content on its platform.

PlayStation Vue plans start at $50 per month, with an Ultra plan that goes as high as $85 per month with premium channels HBO and Showtime. Despite bearing the PlayStation name, the service isn't tied only to PlayStation devices.

The move comes as streaming giants like Netflix and Hulu are facing increased competition from upcoming services like Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus.

Well, it's well known that this kind of paid services are a failure in most cases.

There are around 96 M of active Playstation accounts, only 37% are suscribed to PS plus and just .72% to PlayStation Now.
