Sony: We need Wii U to be successful

Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida says Nintendo's success will benefit Sony by bringing more people to games.

Though the PlayStation 4 and Wii U may be competitors, Sony has spoken out to say it would like to see Nintendo's home console business be successful. More people playing games will benefit the industry at large, Yoshida argued in a new interview with IGN.

"We need Nintendo to be very successful to help induct as many consumers who like to play games with controllers, sticks, and buttons because we believe they are great things," Yoshida said after the interviewer asked about the impact of smartphone and tablet gaming.

Nintendo's Wii U has underperformed so far, selling 3.91 million units, below the company's internal expectations. Yoshida said the console's lower-than-expected sales may come down to Nintendo's pushing the system at core gamers when instead the company should stay focused on the family friendly market.

"I think success or making mistakes depends on how you set your goal. I don't know what was Nintendo’s goal when they launched Wii U," Yoshida said. "To me, it was a bit confusing because what they do really well was create some very safe environment for anyone, especially children to enjoy games like induct those people who have never played games ever to become gamers. And they always do very well."

"To me, what they have made with Wii U was continuing what they were doing well [with the original Wii]. But the messaging when they were saying 'we are for core gamers' was a bit confusing," he added. "But this year I think they slightly changed their messaging, and it seems to me like they are coming back to where they are focused."

Nintendo has a number of marquee first-party titles in the pipeline, including Super Mario 3D World (November 22), as well as Mario Kart 8 and a new Super Smash Bros. game for 2014. Meanwhile, Sony's PS4 launches tomorrow, November 15, in North America.

Honestly I want Nintendo to succeed because it forces the other two to be honest. There was an 800% spike in UK Wii U sales after the Xbox One showing in May, probably more as a protest vote than anything. Competition forces the companies to fight for our business instead of taking it for granted, and no matter which console you back, having more VIABLE competition is needed. I know I don't want Sony to get fat and lazy again.

I've been arguing these points for a while. Gaming needs a Pixar: an ecosystem that can bring new people into gaming without it being an afterthought. I really don't understand the fanboy rage against Nintendo, it's like since they've "grown up" they expect Nintendo to produce games they "want." No! Nintendo needs to focus on quality experiences for the next generation of gamers. I fear for our future if kids gaming experiences are Angry Birds and Call of Duty rather than Mario and Zelda.

lol, I like Sony President Yoshida this guy is funny. Nintendo, in so many words he is basically saying continue down your same path of destruction. I would suggest that you do exactly the opposite to what he has suggested. lol

There're too many consoles these days: Steam machine on the pipeline; 3 from the big three; Ouya and other micro consoles(let alone portable gaming devices). Aren't they going to join force soon so that we can minimize the number of hardwares in living room and bullsh*t exclusivity?

Yes for the same reason, even though they dominate the handheld market, it's still good that there are other viable options for consumers.

The real resin why the Wii u is tanking is that NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THAT IS!!!! The Wii u has absolutely no marketing campaign. I mean how do you expect to have a successful product if you do not advertise the hell out of it? And also the Wii u should focus on both the hard core and the new bloods.

How about repairing the broken PS4s, focus on better games/PSN functionality - and let Nintendo worry about Nintendo. Kk?

if you ever watched an episode of Survivor or Big Brother, then you would know Sony is pulling one of the oldest tricks in the book. Get the weakest player with you to the end, so that the final competition will be a walk in the park. Sony doesn't view Nintendo as a competitor when it comes to home console gaming. This "olive branch" is bull since all Sony would have to do is get more games aimed at toddlers and little children to help usher in even more youthful gamers without Nintendo's help.

Sony only made this comment because they no longer view Nintendo as a threat in this gaming generation period. Sad.

Yes, they no longer view Nintendo as competition, which is why many of their "new features" on the Vita and PS4 look very similar to things Nintendo has done before.

Also who said anything about Nintendo's games being for "toddles and little children?" I see more little children playing on Playstation and XBox, trying to be "cool" and "grown up," those who are more sure of themselves and logical are the ones who tend to go for Nintendo along with whatever else they like.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Vita is dominating, 'tis true...

Seriously though, I think your perception is a bit askew. Wii U is underperforming, but it's hard to say Nintendo's out just yet. At the very least it seems to me that the 3DS is more than capable of picking up the slack until the Wii U has some decent incentives to get people playing.

Did you just say "Vita is dominating"? I seriously had never heard of it until someone mentioned it on Facebook about 8-12 months after its release, and since then have only heard it mentioned once or twice by my gaming friends.

Meanwhile, everywhere I go I see someone playing a 3DS...

I apologize for the confusion. Text can be hard to convey sarcasm in. But that's my point. Vita *isn't* dominating. The 3DS, on the other hand, is huge. Heck. I'm actually playing Pokémon on my 3DS as I type this.

All I read is a bunch of concern trolling by Yoshida. Give me a break, Yoshi. You want to see Ninty do well? Lol, what a joke. That's a lot of pomposity from a guy that came in third place in the last console generation.

Personally, I'd love to see them all do well. I always end up buying all the systems over a couple years because gaming is my main hobby. And the better they all do the more fun I have.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Consider, for a moment, the Japanese console market. People in Japan are basically not buying consoles right now. The PS4 has actually sold less than the Wii U over there. There's actually concern that the market might die. That's why you see Square Enix trying to push the XB1 & PS4 rather than put games onto systems that people have.

Just imagine it as a tech version of WW2, only this battle has been going on far longer than anyone realises. Currently, the Xbox one is the USA and the Allies and the wii U and PS4 represent Japan. They feel the need to obliterate "the enemy" at any cost.

I may be over-doing it with that analogy, but I still wince when I see someone trade in a Ford Mustang for a Toyota Prius.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think that analogy tenuous at best. He simply voiced an opinion on Nintendo and their marketing strategy for the wii u, I'd hardly amount that to teaming up. To compare this to WWII comes off as xenophobic and degrades the sacrifice and loss experienced by all sides in that war. I find it in poor taste. Also, mustangs are ridiculous. It was a car which was basically designed by a marketing team because they all realized how impractical real sports cars are. It's basically for adolescent fantasies and men going through a midlife crisis. I wouldn't trade it in for a prius, but definitely a Mazda. Really, sports cars in general are just kind of silly. Cars are purely utilitarian objects to me, so maybe there's just something I'm just not getting.

@twentymooseman Also, little fact check for you on the Ford Mustang. It was built on the (then) compact Falcon platform to be a sporty good looking family car. Add on the horsepower options and Carrol Shelby and it appealed to teenagers as well. It was aimed at everyone, from an economic base model to the powerful V-8 and convertibles. It also became the best selling car ever. Read Lee Iacocca's books before assuming anything about the Mustang. Since the Mustang, every car maker in the world has tried to recapture the original mustang magic with varied degrees of success. Even ford hasn't duplicated it, but it never replaced true sports cars. Another fact, current mustang owners are 54% male 46% female, and most (76%) are in their mid twenties to early thirties. Mid-life crisis? Funny, I don't even like modern Mustangs and I'm defending them! I do feel sorry for you that you think a car is just utilitarian. You have probably never bonded with a car that limped home on three cylinders in a blizzard or saved your life in an accident.

Honestly why do people keep bringing up third party support if they aren't buying the games?

Look Trickymaster, Nintendo held up their end of the bargain. They flooded launch with a large variety of top titles and it has a more appealing launch lineup then PS4 and X1 TBH. Its the people who go into the store complaining about third party support and then not buying the ports they are offered that are to blame so quit throwing it at Nintendo.

Maybe if more people stood with you in buying these ports these greedy self entitled hacks will begin to listen. Until then companies (the REAL culprits behind the lack of support) will just perceive you as a noise maker who talks with his mouth and not his wallet. Regardless of if you bought the games like I did. Apparently I also bark but don't bite according to these.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Its a real vicious circle....Lack of 3rd party games reduces Wii U sales. Lack of Wii U sales will limit amount of 3rd party support.

Nintendo should have held off on the release until a more steady stream of games were available.... THIS YEAR and quite possibly THIS MONTH. Because there was such a giant disparage between launch lineup until Pikmin (4 months?) even the hardcore Nintendo fans were beginning to get worried.

Its different now and I expect Nintendo to hit the holidays guns blazing.

Nintendo sales have stagnated BECAUSE of Nintendo. They promised a great third party line up and exclusive titles. All of them have been delayed. Wii was a success because it sold well among casual gamers. But, it alienated the core gamers who are far more skeptical and won't buy Wii U until there are decent games.

Wii U also strategically screwed up because it is the last console built on PowerPC architecture while all the others switched to x86 which is what PCs use and thus it will be far easier to develop games on consoles since those games are initially developed on a PC.

Where Nintendo succeeds is mobile gaming. They are still the gold standard and games on smartphones are a joke compared to the quality that 3DS has to offer.

@TrickymasterHonestly i think Wii-U would have been better to launch this year, so many games coming out now and later and i bet 3rd party devs would have supported it more. Add the fact it has free online & its fairly cheap price it would have looked very impressive compared to the competition, that is if they advertised it properly.

It's why I understand Nintendo's reasoning behind utilizing familiar faces to push new ideas, because you can't trust the online community with what they say they want because sales almost never match up with it.

Nintendo leaving the video game industry would be terrible. If they stopped producing games, who is going to make games for little kids? Let's face it, most of the games on the market today are either FPS games or they have extreme blood, guts, violence, language, or sexual content and those games are not suitable for a little kid's first introduction to video games. When they get older, they can move onto more mature games if they want to.

Video games have become so mainstream these days that you need a game with extreme blood or violence to make a huge profit and developers aren't willing to take a chance on developing games that are more friendly towards little kids because kid friendly games just don't sell as well as mature games do. Nintendo is really the only company that can make a huge profit from selling kid friendly or family friendly games.

We as Nintendo Fans Need To see this work out the way we dream it will, Nintendo, Your sales are so low for a system with so much coolness and potential. We need this system to work properly, I when I saw the combienation in my mind, of a wii u, with nunchucks, and the tablet controller, with the gyro-scopic and acellometer sensers, the 3ds with the both wi-fi funtionality, with an InferRed port???? on the side of it, as if to say this all could combine to a free for all hacked up system, you guys deserve the sales and profits of some sereriously skilled hackers working your systems correctly. To be honest, I would say that ya'll are abunch of winey babies complaining about poor system sales, while hackers and gamers everywhere see all the failure nintendo suffers us, with all the hardware potential you place into our hands. You should help us, play these new controllers and 3-D devices the way we see them being played. with games like Metriod, Zelda, F-Zero, and Star-fox. We have these things in our heads, when will we make it happen, with our without you. Hopefully Wii.
