Sony Teases A PlayStation Response To Xbox Game Pass

PlayStation has already been trying to compete with Microsoft's popular gaming subscription service, and Sony CEO Jim Ryan hints that more is in store.

Xbox Game Pass is likely the most popular gaming subscription service right now, and all eyes are now on Sony's response to it. In a TASS interview, when asked directly on what Sony might have planned in order to compete with Xbox Game Pass, Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan stated that there is "news to come."

Ryan also pointed out that PlayStation does offer a competitor to Xbox Game Pass already. "We have PlayStation Now...and that is available in a number of markets," he stated.

PlayStation Now is primarily meant for streaming. However, certain games are available for download. Xbox Game Pass games can be played locally or, if on an Android device, via streaming. PlayStation Now's market is also limited compared to Game Pass, with the service only being available in North America, Europe, and Japan.

In the past few years, Sony has already been steadily trying to compete with Xbox Game Pass. In 2019, it cut the monthly price of PlayStation Now from $20 to $10, seemingly in an effort to match Xbox's Game Pass monthly base price of $10. In 2020, Sony announced PlayStation Plus Collection, a service that gives PS Plus subscribers a selection of big PS4 titles. In a Gamesindustry.biz interview, Ryan stated, "The great first-party IPs are all there, the great partner titles, and we'd say that if you are new to PlayStation, or if you didn't have a PS4 but are getting a PS5, and you're taking out a PS Plus subscription, you're basically getting PS4 there for the price of the subscription."

Ryan also emphasized that the company will not be emulating certain parts of Xbox Game Pass' strategy. In particular, Ryan disagrees with Microsoft's tactic of releasing new games as soon as they come out on the subscription service. "We are not going to go down the road of putting new releases titles into a subscription model. These games cost many millions of dollars, well over $100 million, to develop. We just don't see that as sustainable," he commented.

It's no secret that the Xbox Game Pass is a big appeal for consumers looking to make a decision between the PlayStation or Xbox console. At $10 a month, players can access over 200 games. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier also incorporated EA Play titles recently, adding a bigger slate of games to the subscription service. Ultimate includes Xbox Live Gold, as well. Subscribers essentially never have to buy a new Xbox Game Studios title again, as they are all released through the service the same day they launch traditionally. You can check out our breakdown of Xbox's Game Pass for more information.

It's quite clear why Sony can't offer the same package that Xbox does. While Sony does have stronger games (for the time being), they do not have as much liquid capital as Microsoft does...nowhere even close. If Sony offered their first party games day one on some PlayStation GamePass variant, it would be financial suicide for them right out of the gate. They have, in fact, never had an opportunity to approach Playstation Now with this sort of marketing strategy because the company has been hemorrhaging money for years, with Playstation being one of Sony's few and only profitable ventures. They have never had the opportunity to nurture and support Playstation Now to create some streaming juggernaut akin to a gaming Netflix.

Microsoft has been doing all of this since 2017 and they have aggressively marketed it with their large pool of money with it really starting to pay off since 2019. Unfortunately, the real tragedy here is that these opportunities, as they presented themselves, had very little to do with each consoles respective success. Playstation has been riding a nice high since the PS2 days while the Xbox has gone through its ups and downs over the past 20 years and is only now starting to close the gap. The real problem lies in each company's respective ventures, with Microsoft being much more successful in its investments and net gains whereas Sony has been fairly stagnant. Sony's market value peaked back in the year 2000 before seeing lots of financial turmoil the past 20 years, only barely being able to climb back up in recent years. Microsoft, since 2013, has gradually been building up its market value with aggressive investments and they have managed to see a 600% increase in market value, being worth $212 to Sony's $89 per share.

Microsoft, from countless years of business, is worth at least 1 trillion dollars, to Sony's 110 billion dollars. Now, while neither Microsoft nor Sony would be willing to invest all of these dollars into their console divisions, Microsoft is in a position to invest, at the very least, 9-10 times as much more than Sony could ever hope to put down to advancing their console's growth. No matter how good Sony's Playstation has been in the past, Microsoft is doubling down on investing in Xbox, a far cry from where we were 7 years ago when Don Mattrick was ruining the brand and Xbox was close to being dropped. As you can see, the success of Game Pass has alot to do with these aggressive acquisitions and it will only continue as Microsoft strategically attempts to frontload their premium streaming service with popular AAA titles. Now, they have their eyes on Japanese studios. Up until now, Japan has largely been out of reach of Microsoft's grasp but such a bold and potentially risky investment could quite easily unravel the stranglehold that Sony and Nintendo has had on Japan and its devs for years. Time can only tell how this pan out but if I were a betting man, and I am, I would be willing to put down a sizable amount of coin on Microsoft's strategy here. Sony needs to start finding cash quick to counter these offers or they're going to be on the wrong side of a capitalism-packed beatdown.

And I guess Nintendo can watch because they'll always have their niche and are more than willing to share with Microsoft.

@ValedictorianXD:

With all that money you think they’d have done better. The problem is that vast majority of console gamers prefer better games and that’s why we are looking at the situation we have now.

Take a quick look at game sales on wiki and you’ll see why MS is changing tactics and why Sony is not really that motivated to do it.

1-10 best selling games (in copies):

XB1: 8.72-5 million. PS4: 20-10 million

Best owned Single game:

XB1 (Minecraft) - 5.43 *not exclusive

XB1 (Halo Guardians) - 5 million

PS4 (Uncharted 4) - 16 million

Number of exclusives in the top 10:

XB1: 1

PS4: 5/6 *tie

Number of exclusives in the top 20:

XB1: 4

PS4: 13

They need more customers, Gamepass provided that Avenue. They are leaning on PC, mobile, other Nintendo and Sony having customers because they likely won’t match Sony or Nintendo individual sales numbers ever again.

While they have deep pockets to fill failing number and invest into pushing their GP ecosystem, we will see how far it takes them - as I pointed out, gamers want the best games and MS currently does not have that.

@ValedictorianXD: Microsoft says 70% of of Series X/S buyers have Game Pass. If this rate continues, and assuming $10 a month (my best guess of what people are actually paying on average with sales and discounts) they will make $1 billion a year for every 12 million systems sold. I have no idea what it costs them to operate the entire program, but I have to imagine it's in the hundreds of millions, and far less than a billion, and every extra 12 million systems out the door is another billion dollars in yearly revenue. At 48 million console sold (which I would have to think would be a disappointingly low sales number that's $4 billion a year, and if they can reach the 85 million units they sold with Xbox 360, that's $7 billion a year off Game Pass. And that is just console game pass, not including PC or mobile subscribers. They are going to print money this generation off of Game Pass.

@azalis: Given the demand issues and how many buyers are just scalpers, I wouldn't trust what anyone says about what app or service is doing well on the XSX. It's way too early to be making that call.

And keep in mind we already have a good idea of what GamePass makes because the service has been running for a year and on a much larger market than Xbox. It's actually not that great. Even Sony's crappy PSN dwarfs it. I'm sure it will get better in time but you really shouldn't speculate on numbers right now.

@Barighm: Why are you comparing psn to gamepass? Compare Xbox live to psn and Psnow to Gamepass. Psnow is a failure....between 1 and 2 percent of ps owners subscribe. Under 2 million, while gamepass subscribers passed 10 million in April.

@azalis: there is a big variable you're not considering there, which is the cost of opportunity of not selling the millions of units of first party games they're adding to the system at launch instead. These games, as the Sony guy over there mentioned, cost tens of millions to produce, and depend on game pass to find an audience. It's still a money burner until the install base for the XSX is big enough to offset this cost. But yeah, a base of 50 million XSX/S is more than enough to offset any possible cost and still dole out a dozen AAA first party games a year.

I don't understand why Sony has to have an answer for gamespass. It does not need one. Sony's audience is different. Gamespass has value if you NEED to play the newest games right off the bat and gaming is your only hobby. It only has value the hundred games available are ones that you are interested in. Xbox did what it did because it is trying to expand brand awareness in other territories such as Japan and Europe. The income brackets of people that own a PS4 and Xbox are more than likely different. Yes, there are people who have everything. When you look at people who only own a an Xbox, chances are you are talking to somebody who feels that they cannot afford a lot of things in general. Every time I have heard of someone just owning an Xbox One, it was because it was only $100 for the VCR model. PS4s stayed at $400 respectively with the original model only dropping in price by $100. People who only own PS4s have a good bit of money to spend on games. They choose to afford $70 for a single player experience. Sony's audience is different than Microsoft's. Why do you think Microsoft released a "budget" console and has a payment plan that is ridiculous because you are paying more in the long run.

I want to play a game when I choose to and not feel rushed because it is leaving a service. If I want to play a game for awhile and then put it down for six months because I choose to do other things with my life, then I want to be able to come back to it when I want to. Would it be successful for Sony? Possibly. I think that companies should compete in their own way and this generation seems to be the first one where all the console are doing something different. Why can't gamepass just be Microsoft's thing?

Gamepass is a good for people who do not feel like buying games and also play heavily. Gamepass competes with services like gamerang and gamefly. If you beat games in a week and don't look back, then gamepass is for you. I would have loved gamepass 15-20 years ago. Sony's market is a single player market where the first titles have value. Sony has a worldwide presence. It does not need gamepass to strengthen its brand.

The same goes for Nintendo. People value the first party titles so much that their willing to pay $60 for upscaled ports of old games.

Nintendo's market is about hitting nostalgia and valuing its first party games. Sony's market is all about the single player experience while propping up its first party offerings, and Microsoft is all about the multiplayer experience letting third parties fit the bill for almost everything else.

A gamepass user is not going too picky about the games that are offered on the service. They feel happy just that they are able to play games. Sony's market wants more single player experiences and they have the funds to pay for the games they want.

@laurenriley3332: Er...no. That's...not right at all.

MS did what they did because they don't believe console gaming is a growing market. As Spencer himself said, "everyone who wants an Xbox gets an Xbox, and that's it" or something like that. The market isn't expanding or evolving. Meanwhile, service based games like Fortnite are going crazy, so MS decided to focus on services. It's the best move for them because they're already dominant in the software market which better leverages their brand. Essentially, every computer with Windows is an Xbox, so by going services they've just gained billions of customers.

@laurenriley3332: there's absolutely nothing in there that makes sense. Even if I wanted to play a game at launch and then come back to it in two years and it's not on game pass anymore, it already costs like $20 on sale. Even if I feel I'm "paying twice" for the game, it is still almost nothing compared to buying it for $70 right away. And what kind of bullshit is "a gamepass user is not going too picky about the games that are offered on the service, they feel happy just that they are able to play games"? That's as dumb as saying whoever pays Netflix is happy with watching old tv shows. The average xbox player makes $75k a year, which is above the American average. They literally have the world of gaming open for them, with all first party games available from launch plus whatever EA has on the table plus oddball additions like that Tetris game...

@laurenriley3332: Sorry but that's complete rubbish. First of all, disposable income has nothing to do with what console people buy. Second, Sony has become the home of 1st person shooters. They're literally the home of COD with early maps and exclusive DLC like game modes. They have a very expensive deal with the largest 1st person shooter franchise in history but they're all about single player games. Right. Sony cannot survive on 1 exclusive a generation from 5 studios. They have to adapt and grow towards long term goals or Microsoft and even Amazon and Google will leave them behind. Services are the future and that requires massive server farms that Microsoft, Google and Amazon are investing heavily in. Sure Sony could basically survive on being the console for RPG's but gaming is becoming synonymous with socialization. People want to enjoy games together. Hard to do that with a single player game like The Last of Us. I've always felt that when using a PlayStation console, social gaming was an afterthought. Its only part of last gen and the beginning of this gen that they are taking social gaming more seriously which is a good thing and you want them to stick mainly to single player RPG's. That is not a long term strategy. You can keep spending your $70 on single player games while Sony comes up with a plan to compete with Game Pass where, not only can you play AAA games on launch day, but you can play games you normally wouldn't have tried and find out that little known game is actually a blast. Sony can do both.

@bdrtfm: Sony relies on third parties for mutiplayer. Sony gave up on multiplayer after games like Socom, MAG Twisted Metal Metal, and Starhawk failed to sell well on PS3. I did not say anything about what I wanted the company to do. My point was that Sony does not need a service like gamepass. If Sony wants to expand PS Now into something more than a streaming where you play older titles, then that is fine. I would rather Sony do its own thing than compete with Microsoft head on. Sony wants to sell consoles. The company has already said that it is not going to put its first party lineup on PS Now day 1 because it is not good business sense. In other words "why should we put our games on a service day 1 when people are willing to buy our games"? Gamepass is not a threat to Sony's business. It has been out for a year, yet Xbox One never outsold PS4 since the launch of the service. If Gamepass is such a threat, than why isn't Nintendo also jumping on the wagon offering its first party offerings for basically free to expand the audience? Simple. It doesn't need to. Why give away for free what people are willing to pay for?

@laurenriley3332: Making multimillion dollar deals with COD and Destiny is not giving up on shooters. They may not be making their own shooters but they are relying on deals with shooters to make money. Why do you think they added haptic feedback to their controller triggers? Mainly for shooters. And if Sony does expand PS Now by streaming older titles, they are doing the same as Microsoft minus 1st party games on day one. You don't have to copy a company exactly to be considered a direct competition to their product. And how exactly do you know what Sony does or doesn't need? The only people who know that are their board of directors. What you think they need is irrelevant because it may or may not be the reality. And do you really think that after Xbox being outsold 2 to 1 and not catching up by doubling their total sales in one freaking year is proof that Game Pass is not successful? Again, making stuff up and calling it fact. Like putting things it quotes as if you know that's what the company is saying. Jesus. Just because you put games on a sub doesn't mean you can't sell the game a la carte as well. I know people who've tried a game on Game Pass and then purchased it because they like it. People who own an Xbox and don't have Game Pass also buy those games. Microsoft would not be doing this unless it was profitable. Companies are not in the habit of throwing money away. Also, selling console loses money. And just because Nintendo doesn't have its own version of Game Pass doesn't mean they wouldn't like to have one. Starting a service like Game Pass takes a huge investment and huge server farms. Something Sony and Nintendo don't have a lot of.

@bdrtfm: Sony came out with PS Now back in 2014. It was mainly done to give the PS4 backwards compatibility. with PS3 games. My original comment was talking about the first party. Yes, Sony has multiplayer games on its console through third parties. They made a deal with Activision to get casual players on board with buying a console. You keep saying that first person shooters are fact and they aren't. It is not "shooter." It is one of the most popular games. When people think of PlayStation, they do not think of first person shooters. I am pretty sure the CEO of PlayStation said that the company was not going to do day 1 streaming or downloads for new titles. That is a fact. I am not going to provide a link. Willingly PS Now will be expanded in a different way and will not follow suit with Microsoft is doing. Each company having its own identity would awesome. It would be the first time anyone has seen anything like this. In the 16 bit era, both Nintendo and Sega had the same strategy. Same thing with Sony and Nintendo during the 5th generation of consoles. PS2 won the 6th generation because of all the exclusives, the dvd player, and also because both Nintendo and Microsoft had consoles with no identity of their own. The exclusives were cool, but if you had a PS2, you had access to 90% of the console market. PS3 and 360 were pretty much the same. The saving grace for the PS3 was the large array of first party games and free online. PS4 and Xbox One were pretty much the same machine. the ninth generation has the potential to be totally different from anything we have seen. You have Nintendo focusing on playing games anywhere, Microsoft is focusing on games as a service like Gamefly, and Sony focuses on single player experiences leaving third parties to fit the bill for multiplayer. Each company has its own specialty.

PS Now should be expanded, but I don't think it should be day 1 streaming and downloading of first party titles. If I wanted that option, I would have invested in an Xbox. I buy Sony and Nintendo consoles because of what they specialize in, and if no company is going to specialize in anything, then why buy from those companies? Why not just have one platform for gaming instead of three.? If we are headed towards another 6th generation of gaming, then that is a step back. The games will still be fun, but if everybody does the same thing, then why bother getting multiple devices or investing in video games in the first place?

@laurenriley3332: Personally, I feel like Sony should have a similar offer, especially as Microsoft sweeps up companies left and right and offers them on the service. Sony might have the stronger catalog but that won't last long if Microsoft is more than willing to put down the coin for some strong devs. Microsoft is trying to buy their win in this console war and they likely will if left unchecked.

@ValedictorianXD: Microsoft has not purchased any developer with amazing quality. Microsoft has been buying studios that were in trouble financially. Double Fine was struggling to do anything. Psychonauts 2 is still not out, and it has been in development for what? five years. Ninja Theory was also struggling and their games were hit or miss. Bethesda this, Bethesda that. Bethesda has not made anything good outside of what Id and Tango games have done. Machinehead games have not captured the magic of the new order. Fallout and Elder scrolls have been buggy as can be. Arkane is also hit or miss. Dishonored is seen as good, but Prey was a broken mess at launch. Fallout 3 and Skyrim did not run so hot on PS3, so Bethesda going potentially exclusive will not hurt Sony that much. It may even help the studios in the Bethesda family make better games because they only need to focus on one platform. The full takeover will not happen until well until next year. This is the reason why Microsoft will not announce Bethesda games being exclusive because Arkane and Tango Games are both working on the PS5 exclusively right now. Unless Microsoft plans to buy Capcom, Take 2, Activision, Namco, or Square, I do not see the company taking Sony's business. Microsoft is focusing on quantity over quality. If the developers can make better games under Microsoft, then more power to them.

@laurenriley3332: Not purchased any developer of quality? Now you're just being silly again. Skyrim alone sold over 20 million copies and is one of the top 20 best selling games in history. Minecraft is the best selling game in history at 200 million copies. Not purchased any developer of quality. Holy cow! And neither of those companies were struggling financially. Stop making stuff up. Just because they're not games YOU enjoy does not make them games with no quality or developers that are tanking. Zenimax and Mojang were in financial trouble. LOL. You're comments can be summed up in one word; "Projection". Not making a game recently that you like is not struggling. When a group of developers are under one umbrella, they are not struggling unless the company they are owned by is struggling. I mean, can 343i be in financial trouble if HALO Infinite doesn't sell well when the company who owns them is worth a trillion dollars?

I used to be big on buying physical copies then i got tired of having 100's of game boxes taking up space back when i had ample time to play games so i retired them to a disc folder. Nowadays i usually buy digital and only buy a physical copy if it's going cheap on Amazon. The used games market is huge with a large number of people trading a game in once it's completed and these types of sub services reflect that. Why spend £50 on a game then trade it in for £20-£30 when you can just pay £10 a month and not have the expense or hassle of buying it and trading it in? Personally iv never traded a game or bought used, prefering to own it and go back to play it whenever i want since i tend to take a while finishing games, if ever, but i can definently see the value in these services.

I am mildly interested in a good subscription scheme, but the libraries can change too fast for my liking, I would hate to not be able to finish or continue playing because I ran out of time, Spiderman on PS Now stayed for 3 months only.. so buying them from sales is a more viable option.

@white_wind: You can play offline upwards of 1 month on Xbox, even pc gamepass including gold, but once you hard reset you must establish a connection.

It can be with your phone's hotspot, or anything thing, and if the gamepass game is 1 day away from expiring you can play it upwards of 30 days but must not connect to the internet.

You will redeem the achievements once connected, something not even GameSpot staff are aware of.

@white_wind: Actually, GamePass' library is pretty retentive. Games don't leave all that often. Not sure about PS Now, but its library is thrice the size, so I assume it's similar.

Xbox putting their "few/er" first-party games on their Game Pass day one is a very aggressive marketing tactic, and it doesn't seem sustainable. Will they just give away Bethesda's future games to all subscribers? hmm will be interesting to see

@white_wind: They make money off of subs. People who don't have Game Pass still buy the games on Xbox and other platforms. They make money off of microtransactions. They make money off of people who have Gamepass and still want to buy the games at a small discount. They make money and at the end of the day that matters most.

@white_wind: They make 100 000 000 per month or more off of subscriptions. I don't know how much they pay to put a game on gamepass, but I'm sure that leaves plenty to make big budget games. Let's not forget that non subscribers still purchase those games, or some make a nice return after they leave the service, even if they're reduced in price by then. That said, I doubt we'll see very many 1st party games as lavishly produced as Sony's end up on gamepass. That's fine by me.

@swai666: Knack 2? I have fun playing God of War, Last of Us Part 2, Luigi's Mansion 2, Witcher 3, Breath of the Wild, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, Half-Life Alyx, Bloodborne, and so on.

So you want $70 for your first party games AND a monthly service fee? Ya, no thanks. Get bent. You don't get to have your cake and eat it too.

@cugabuh: XSX expects the same thing, dude, and Nintendo isn't any better. And don't give me "Xbox exclusives on GamePass". I've played most of them, and, aside from Ori, they've all been some variant of disappointing. And nearly every new game added to GamePass, even the singleplayer games, are installing registry level anti-cheat (read: root kit) software, some of which aren't even monitored by MS (the anti-cheat included in Halo MCC is a third party software that has already been shown to take screenshots of your browsing activity, and post it to publicly accessible servers, even after you close Halo).

@Barighm: first party microsoft games are included in gamepass day 1. Sony is on record saying they won't do that. If they did, this would be a much different discussion and I'd consider signing up for their service.

@cugabuh: what they’re saying is they don’t believe releasing them date and day on a subscription service. To be fair most if not all of Sony’s 1st party IP are so lavishly produced I do t think MS will ever follow suit and settle more on something like AA 1/2 for most titles and maybe 1-2 AAA titles every other year the likes produced by Sony first party. Or maybe never. I love how gamepass fills the gap between Sony’s first party lineup for me.

@consolehaven: There are $70+ games on Game Pass from Day 1 of their launch. Not sure what you are talking about.

As someone who prefers physical media over digital, even I have to concede gamepass is great value. Playstation now just pales in comparison, at this stage anyway.

@Lordcrabfood: gamepass is brilliant, Xbox has been stepping it up after the awful Xbox One I believe I will get the newer Xbox.

@daydream24: Well, no, that's not true. It's great value at $1. At full price, it's another crappy MS service with all of the usual bugs and glitches that MS services tend to have. It's useful for grabbing MS exclusives, but for general gaming you're still gonna want to stick with Steam, or give GeForce Now a try.
