Sony targeting PlanetSide 2 'scumbag' cheaters

SOE president John Smedley says company is "aggressively" banning those found using hacks in new free-to-play shooter.

Sony is going to war with PlanetSide 2 hackers. In a series of tweets last night and this morning, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley said the studio is "aggressively" seeking out and banning those found using hacks in the new free-to-play game.

"I want to make some very clear statements about hacking in PlanetSide 2," Smedley said. "We are aggressively banning people. As they develop hacks, we will break the hacks. We have time and great people. Trust that this is a top priority. Hackers will not win."

Smedley called out one specific gamer, saying each of his three accounts had been banned, but not before firing off some harsh words. "Goodbye you scumbag. Find a new hobby or get good at the game," he said.

PlanetSide 2 launched last month exclusively on PC. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Hackers do not play for the challenge or for the fun factor but to win dirty stats who means absolutely nothing, when it is coming from a childish cheat. But banning them will not serve for anything. Since PS2 looks so much like other games, why not use a system like Punk Buster?

The bane of free to play and the core of why it sucks as a payment model... no repercussions for hacking. If they ban your account, just make another one. It doesn't cost you anything. It's far worse if you have an ISP that gives you a dynamic IP, and those with static IPs can just use VPNs. I've been there and I've personally tried to deal with removing these kinds of people and it's impossible. I once banned Vietnam in its entirety from a free to play game for a weekend because things were really getting that bad in one concentrated area.

@jinzo9988 Actually in PS, it is a hard hit. Even if you use cheats, you'll probably earn MAYBE 100 certification points an hour. To unlock NEW weapons, costs 1000 Cert points per weapon. And there's about 30 infantry weapons, 5 MAX suit weapons, and roughly 40+ vehicle weapons. And all you've done at that point, is UNLOCK them. To buff them with scopes, silencer etc. costs more cert points, to say nothing of the individual class' abilities that have to cert point unlocked as well. Someone on the game, said that if you bought everything in game with station cash, it would probably cost between $300-$500 dollars. But the Station cash points spends, are CHEAPER cost spends, than the Certification point spends. So someone who does a lot of cheating and unlocking, will have a very long road to start over on when they get caught.

@Khasym What's the point of unlocking stuff if you're aimbotting? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You can use the worst gun in the game and still wreck everything with an aimbot. It's not about unlocking things. Yeah, that's one of those things that holds people back from cheating(the same way that buying a game does), but it's not a very good one if aimbotting overrides gear upgrades and the benefits of having that gear.

You can get rid of all the scumbags easily; it's the douchebags that will give you real problems.

@egger7577 Yeah, douchebags are second only to scumbags. A$$holes can also be a problem but are generally easily dealt with. I'm proud of Smedley targeting the scumbags first.

Good. Hackers don't deserve to play. Ever.

@muppen Completely agree. I just started playing this game so hopefully they can keep the hacking to a minimum.
