Sony has announced that its next State of Play event is coming this week. The livestream is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 9 at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET / 11 PM BST (8 AM AEST on May 10). The show will last around 10 minutes and feature a new look at the PS4 MediEvil remake, as well as a brand new game. [Update: The event is over, and the big news involved Final Fantasy VII's remake (which got a new trailer) and Monster Hunter World (which got new details about its Iceborne expansion). We've got a full roundup of all the State of Play news to get you caught up.]

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, social media director Sid Shuman also said that Sony will "have other updates and announcements from upcoming PS4 games." For those wondering whether there will be any more details about PS5, he said, "Don’t expect any updates relating to our next-generation plans this time. Sorry."

State of Play will be streamed on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. Of course, GameSpot will also carry the stream and report all the news as it happens.

PlayStation's State of Play is very much modeled on the Nintendo Direct format, though they have generally been much shorter thus far. The first one happened in March and revealed that an Iron Man PlayStation VR game is in the work. We also got a look at a number of other upcoming PS4 titles. You can catch up on everything that happened in March's State of Play here.

While Sony isn't ready to talk about PS5 in the State of Play, a few details have officially been revealed. These include its specs, confirmation of backwards compatibility, and assurance that PS VR will be supported in the next-generation PlayStation. You can read about everything we know about PS5 here.

There's rumors going around that Sony is going to announce a price drop on the slim PS4 during this event.

MediEvil… now that’s a franchise I haven’t heard in a very long time.

Still, I am a little apprehensive that this next State of Play reveal will really impress if it follows the same kind of content and structure of the previous one.

The fact that it won’t reveal anything new in the way of news on the PS5 is a bit of a let down but hopefully some of the other bits of news will quench the thirst gamers have for news of a new console in some form.

I understand financially Sony’s reasons for doing this quick “tid-bits” of gaming news as opposed to a full blown all out conference (E3.) but if they follow the same format and deliver the same “excitement” that the first rendition did I think it will actually be a detriment to the Sony brand rather than a move forward.

@lolman666: It's a remake. So no matter what they do it will still lack.

I'm really waiting what happens with the new Crash Bandicoot sequel. But oh right they're making CTR first. By God I hope their next plan isn't Crash Bash. Make an actual new game! It can have the classic style yet new story, levels, music and everything. If they can't make the distinction between amazing Crash trilogy and something sucky like Wrath of Cortex (which like wanted to be Crash 4 but sucked in so many ways it just killed the style) they're just not getting it.

Then what happens after Medievil? Medievil 2? And then? By God I hope they don't continue with Ape Escape and other remakes.

@PrpleTrtleBuBumYou should learn the difference between whats a remaster(Crash Bandicoot, CTR, Shadow of the Colossus) and a full blown remake(Medievil, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy 7) and not assume at the start if something will lack..Just look at Resident Evil 2..that game was darn good

@lolman666: except they spent whole time saying how crash bandicoot is a remake made completely from nothing. which i think is accurate its not just a texture swap

and yeah. i still imagine how amazing new resident evil could have been done like that, except way bigger since modern tech allows. the dlc chapters are that though. but medievil doesnt look anyhing like that. if they have like 4 hour extra story set in feodal japan or something though then ill go apeshit. ctr has some extra tracks which is a nice start but still its like 90% old content 10% new content which is just sad

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: There's very strong evidence to suggest a Demon's Souls remake is coming, or at least a remaster.

@Barighm: i dont blame them since people already ask for remakes of mass effect and other games. all i know it saves me money when the options are anthemlike antigames and remade old games i still play regular just fine. ok there are sekiros and stuff too but thats like 1/3 of market

@Marky360: Yeah, even my kids were bored with the last one, and they'll watch any trailer there is.

And yet, I will watch this one. And, probably, the one after that.
