Sony Shutting Down Services for Fat Princess: Piece of Cake on Vita/Mobile [UPDATE]

Fat Princess: Piece of Cake will have its online services shut down on all platforms by early next year.

[UPDATE] Sony has responded to GameSpot's request for comment, saying the posted mobile date is wrong and is being corrected to line up with the Vita version's shut down on January 1 at 1 AM PT. Additionally, Sony told us that the game will no longer be downloadable from the respective stores after the shut down date. You will still be able to play it in offline mode, as long as you don't remove it from your device, though.

Original story: Fat Princess: Piece of Cake is having its online services shut down. A retirement notice has appeared on the Android and iPhone pages for the free-to-play puzzle game, while Sony is alerting Vita owners through email.

On the Vita, Piece of Cake's online features will be discontinued next year on January 1 at 1 AM PT. The Android and iPhone versions are shutting down one month earlier on December 1 at 12 AM PT.

No Caption Provided

In-game purchases are now disabled. Additionally, players can no longer spend any earned or purchased gold on in-game items, earn a voucher for Fat Princess on PS3 for finishing level 15, or download the game from "My apps." Players will, however, be able to play Piece of Cake in offline mode for as long as they have it on their device.

We've contacted Sony for more information on Piece of Cake's closure and whether you'll be able to download the game after its online services are shut down. We'll update this article as we hear back.

The latest game in the series was Fat Princess Adventures. It received a score of 5/10 in GameSpot's review, which said, "Fat Princess Adventures' impactless combat, boring side quests, and confusing user interface all add up into something that isn't exciting or satisfying to play."

This is sooo wrong that people can't re-download their games. Oh but lets go all digital right - I'm looking at you Microsoft! Thank God for pirates at-least they will keep games alive and sometimes for the people that actually paid for them. Pirates also allow people to play games that aren't working because of the B.S. drm for people who actually bought it. Those were just a couple of pieces of food for thought to all you pirate bashers out there. Shame on you Sony people bought these games and dlc it should stay in your store for them to download even if you don't want new sales.

@ChicagoSteel: Well over 90% of the games which are delisted from the Xbox marketplace can be downloaded again if you delete them FYI. Most of those exceptions result from Free to Play games, online only, and some with squirrelly rights issues.

@ChicagoSteel: Normally I would agree, but isn't this a free to play game? Definitely sucks for those who bought all those microtransactions - but this is quite common if we look at other online games that have been shut down.

@7tizz: Maybe I could've worded it different and hind sight being 20/20 I guess I should have. I opened the comment making a statement about the article above, Sony not letting people acquire their legally bought game ("This is sooo wrong that people can't re-download their games.") I then made a sarcastic quip about Microsoft wanting to go all digital with the release of Xbox One ("Oh but lets go all digital right - I'm looking at you Microsoft!"). Thank God they didn't but if you remember they sure were pushing for it. So I can understand how some confused my opening statement with the sarcastic remark about Microsoft, which is why I am clearing this up, hopefully.

@ChicagoSteel: What? I can re-download the games on Xbox One/Windows Store if they've been Delisted from the store without any issues, the latest game that's not available is A world of Keflings PC version on the windows store, I can still download it from the same account

This is what holds back the "all digital" future. You cant even re-download the game that you purchased. And with the insufficient memory on their devices, you need to choose between keeping the games you purchased previously or buying newer games.

Still not a fan of how Sony has their "Delisted Games Can't Be Redownloaded" setup going, hopefully they fix that in the near future.

Never played any of the Fat Princess games, are they any good? They're not all "Candy Crush" styled, are they?

@LPDisturbedHU:

Fat Princess on the PS3 was fun. It was more of a MOBA...you picked a class...Warrior, Engineer, Wizard, Archer, or Priest, and worked to upgrade each class by mining and lumbering rocks and wood to upgrade each spawn point. A DLC allowed you to be a pirate, ninja or giant. Upgrading spawn points increased power. The warrior would become a lancer. The archer would become a shot gunner. The priest could be turned into a dark priest. And so on...

The objective was to keep the captured princess in your dungeon, while rescuing your princess from the enemy's dungeon. To rescue, you would need to breach the enemy's walls, doors, or catapult into their castle. As a defensive measure, you could feed the princess cake, which would make her "fat" and difficult (slow) to carry out of the enemy's castle. Of course, as you did this, the other side was trying the same thing, so it was a balance of attackers and defenders...as well as people gathering resources to reinforce the castle doors. It was multiplayer, with around 10 people on each side. It was chaotic fun.

Never tried the PS4 version, but it looked more like a 4 person co-op.

@7tizz: Well there was furor over it when the first one came out years ago on PS3 but everyone quickly realized it was just some lame PSN game and they moved onto bigger targets.

Yet another example of Sony using the revenues from PS+ to NOT keep servers for online games up.

Which is why I still got my PS3 hook up for 2 reasons. 1-free online and 2-100% BC.

@lonesamurai1: How is it overpriced? From my understanding there are 100's of games that you can play as long as you pay for the annual sub.

I've heard the single rental prices are absolutely absurd though.

@lonesamurai1: Let's not forget that streaming introduces another variable to mess up timing in games. Lag messes up timing, which can make dealing with some situations harder if you only have a brief opportunity. This could be a brief opportunity to attack an enemies, get to the next room, or complete a QTE. This is why Valve implemented a countdown tool in Portal 2's coop mode.

You're also right about streaming. Gamers don't want it. If they did, Onlive would have made the Ouya a success as a cheap micro console that can stream games.

@lonesamurai1: The thing is not everyone has access to that kind of speed. In addition, as TV screen resolutions get bigger and audio quality keeps improving, the better the connection will have to be for quality streaming. There's the fact that if you have multiple devices online at once, it will slow down your connection.

It is also worth mentioning there is another issue I didn't bring up. Data caps. Companies are wanting to restrict Internet access via data caps. It's to punish people who are trying to cut the cord.
