Sony's Internet TV Service Launching in Test Markets Very Soon

Sony's PlayStation Vue, an ambitious-sounding cloud-based TV streaming service for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, will begin its nationwide commercial rollout in select test markets by the end of the month. That's according to Sony executive Andrew House, who told The Wall Street Journal that Vue will be available by invitation-only test in New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia within the next two weeks.

If you're not invited to the testing period, Vue will be available across the country by the end of the year, House clarified.

Announced in November 2014, Vue is one of a handful of Internet TV services targeting "cord cutters," people who ditch their traditional cable providers in favor of fully digital services. Others include Dish Network's Sling TV and HBO Now.

Vue lets users watch all manner of live TV and on-demand content from juggernaut networks including FOX, NBCUniversal, Viacom, and GameSpot parent company CBS. You can see a full list of network partners here. One major holdout is Walt Disney, which owns ABC and ESPN. An ESPN spokesperson confirmed discussions with Sony are underway, but no deal has been made.

"Even absent ESPN, we are very confident that we have a very robust offering in the sports area with existing partnerships," House explained.

Pricing for Vue has not been announced, though Sony previously promised "fair and competitive" membership costs that are transparent and don't have hidden fees or charges.

Vue will be available first on PS3 and PS4, becoming later arriving for iPad and other Sony and non-Sony devices.
