Sony rules out always-online for PS4 - Report

PlayStation 4 to avoid always-connected approach because "many countries don’t have robust Internet connections."

Sony has ruled out making always-online functionality a core part of its next home console, according to an interview in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine.

No Caption Provided

Sony president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, said that a constant Internet connection would not be required from users, given the differences in web services available across the globe.

“Did we consider it? No, we didn’t consider it," said Yoshida. "The main reason being that many countries don’t have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw [that] do not really have robust Internet.”

Microsoft is believed to be preparing to lift the veil on its own next-generation hardware offering on May 21. Months of rumour and speculation originally suggested that the next Xbox may require users to be connected to the internet at all times. However, a recently-uncovered, leaked internal memo reportedly sent to the Xbox development team suggests that the company’s next device will not require users to be online to watch live TV, view movies, or play single-player games.

@Falru Its one of the reasons. Lets face it, IF everyone had great, affordable internet that was perfectly stable and online 100% of the time, cloud-based services would be household by now. That isn't to say, it would be welcomed with open arms by everyone (I can honestly say I've no interest in it myself), but there's definitely an audience for it. All it would take is for a big investor to step in and do what OnLive did - only better.

Of course, the views expressed by Sony today are the same as they've been for many years; even before always-online became a thing anybody was talking about. Kaz Hirai is a longstanding supporter of physical media formats, Sony are still investing in and developing physical media formats (Blu Ray, HPV), and Sony still has a strong market presence across parts of Asia and the pacific where internet ranges from terrible to "lol-wuts-a-internet".

There are plenty of reasons a console manufacturer may pursue always-online, but its not likely to happen any time soon unless they're willing to accept a much smaller target audience than a console like the PS4. Always-online consoles, however aren't a matter of 'if,' but 'when'.

@Falru reasons are transitory and hard to ascertain; be glad of the results instead.

If there's any truth in the latest round of rumors, some of the Sony fanboys may have to eat their words about MS and this whole issue. Still a couple of weeks 'til we know for sure, but I think it'll be a more level playing field than some were expecting.

@Carpetfluff The damage to Microsoft has been done, at this point it's just a matter of how much damage, significant or miniscule.

@iswhatitis @Carpetfluff I don't see any dmg being done really. For the most part, people have always been like this towards MS.

@dman123_1 @iswhatitis @Carpetfluff The David Orthe comments raised a record breaking amount of uproar and as we all know gamers can be petty creatures and wont forgive those comments easily even though MS let the man go all Sony has to do is clever marketing to stay the avenging knight in the eyes of consumers, this article? Clever marketing if you'll notice it makes Sony seem like they where filled with distaste at the very idea of "Always Online". Even though they at some point too considered it.

@Carpetfluff I'm assuming the tech and specs are going to be pretty similar and very level. A lot of it has been blown out of proportion.

But that happens every new console generation. Hell, that's part of the fun to me. Let's make all these assumptions on rumors and have fun with it until the truth is revealed.

Well so far both Sony and MS have said that the console itself won't require to be always online, but they can't say anything about the games who can be (and some will be) always online

How strange that this would come forth a few days after MS' statement about not including always-online features, and then the representative even goes on to summarize the most common remark made against always-online. It seems to me that Sony is really going for all the low hanging fruits they can get.

@dman123_1 @DiamondDM13 @troll_eat_troll @Halloll Statistically, you have a much greater chance of having your wallet, phone, or computer stolen from your house.

@DiamondDM13 @dman123_1 @troll_eat_troll @Halloll Who said I was supporting MS? Besides, didn't they extend the warranty for the epidemic? I don't know who's 300 dollars was thrown out of the window, but all of my money have been well spent so consider me lucky I guess. The point I was making is simply this, things break, there are warranties, if your credit card info is stolen, (if only the numbers) yeah that can be changed, but if they get more than that, than changing your card won't do much. I will agree though, the red ring issue was ridiculous, but you all are even more ridiculous if you think it will happen this gen and face another billion dollar loss.

@dman123_1 @DiamondDM13 @troll_eat_troll @Halloll You rather have your console actually dead? 300$ off the window, then having your information POSSIBLY stolen, that can be changed in 5 minutes online to be sure you're not hacked?

No wonder you're supporting MS...

Well, it's rumored that the Xbox 720 requires constant internet connection. So I guess Sony is just taking the opportunity to say 'hey everyone! You don't need constant internet with us! Take that Microsoft!'.

"many countries don’t have robust Internet connections" if thats the reason sony doesnt want ps4 to be always online then i fear for the future of gaming.

I have 100/10mb fiber connection and i would not want an always online ps4.

Let's see... A couple of months ago we had Adam Orth / DealWithIt story, constant Always-online rumors surrounding next Xbox and finally, a Sim game from EA ruined by said Always-online mandate (SimCity).

Flash forward and right now we have an allegedly "leaked" doc screaming that MS is NOT using Always-online for next Xbox, Sony making a clear statement against it and finally, a new Sim game that touts "Offline Singleplayer Experience" from EA (Sims 4).

Yeah, vocal "minority"... Seems like the said "minority" finally kicked some sense into the heads of corporate giants and their "majority" loving ways.

@Fallout_red like 3D movies, it will return, and with mobile Broadband making more and more of an impact, it will be less of an excuse for it not to happen. As you see, phone companies are letting you use your hotspot without charge for the most part and is making data a priority in your phone plan
