Sony rules out always-online for PS4 - Report

PlayStation 4 to avoid always-connected approach because "many countries don’t have robust Internet connections."

Sony has ruled out making always-online functionality a core part of its next home console, according to an interview in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine.

No Caption Provided

Sony president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, said that a constant Internet connection would not be required from users, given the differences in web services available across the globe.

“Did we consider it? No, we didn’t consider it," said Yoshida. "The main reason being that many countries don’t have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw [that] do not really have robust Internet.”

Microsoft is believed to be preparing to lift the veil on its own next-generation hardware offering on May 21. Months of rumour and speculation originally suggested that the next Xbox may require users to be connected to the internet at all times. However, a recently-uncovered, leaked internal memo reportedly sent to the Xbox development team suggests that the company’s next device will not require users to be online to watch live TV, view movies, or play single-player games.

@Heshertonfist It'll be a dongle/plug on your TV that communicates with the DS4 controller. Occasionally sending data online through your modem, because it's not going to be "always on-line". ;-)

"The main reason being that many countries don’t have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw [that] do not really have robust Internet.”

Now, this is the speech of a truly global company.
In oposition to the speech of their competition, which is truly regional, and goes something like: - Our only profitable market is the U.S. and with a little push our local fans will come around and accept it. The rest of the world? Who cares?

It's not just about third world countries, I live in America and I don't have a "robust internet connection." For those of us who don't live in dense urban cities, we have one internet service provider and because of a lack of competition there's no desire to improve service or quality. I'm stuck with Time Warner and my sketchy connection

@sephirothsfan02 What disappointed you? Just wondering. I have all the consoles, and I'm not a specific fan of the box itself. I like the variety of games. That's what I'm a fan of.

@Mendax2013 @ominous_prime @sephirothsfan02 If you only think there are Kinect games then you haven't done your research. As I said, I don't worry about what game comes out where because I tend to get all the consoles. Not a fan boy of any system. I just like video games.

@Sam_021 Microsoft already said you could play offline last week. The only company I know of that requires you to be online to play all the time is Steam.

Microsoft did not say such a thing lol!!!

Steam doesn't need you to be online at all to play games, you can play offline all you want.

You need to check your bullshit before spreading it to other people rofl

@Sam_021 @ominous_prime Microsoft did have an inter office memo stating such a thing. They didn't have a press conference because they are going to talk about such things at the press event where they announce their console. When you purchase a game that requires you to have Steam, you have to have Steam verify it, therefore you are required to have an online connection to play a game from Steam. Don't try to refute because you are ignorant. Check yourself before you try to point the finger. Make statements that add to the conversation. Sony held a press event to grandstand on something that was rumored on their console and was a rumor carried over from when the PS3 was being created. You don't know much Sam_021 and it shows.

@Sam_021 Leaked memo to all Microsoft staff:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/next-xbox-will-not-require-internet-connection-report-6407955

On Steam you need to registry your game online(only once) before you can play it offline.

@Lord_Sesshy "just like everyone else"

Nope. I made that choice last time, all it does is make you end up with a bunch of platforms where you play one or two of them, and the rest end up collecting dust.

@Lord_Sesshy Well, I've owned all 3 consoles from this gen at different times, so maybe you're partially right about that. I guess for me, it comes down to which console has the kinds of games I want to play, and caters to the specific aspects I want it to cater to. I flip-flopped a lot the last two gens because it's getting more difficult to find just what I'm looking for on a game console anymore.

Looking ahead, it's good that we don't have to worry about always-online and the death of used games. But with each new iteration of console they find ways of screwing gamers and giving them more things to spend money on besides just games, which are already a big investment.

This gen they started selling bits and pieces of games as DLC, and focused on multimedia functionality and advertisement. Lots of games are released digitally now, so there are digital games and disc-based games to consider. They started getting people to pay subscription fees for various services. And now pre-orders and expensive special edition versions of games are commonplace.

To play console games anymore, I think gamers will have to be even more cautious of which games they spend money on and which features they take advantage of, or risk throwing away a lot of cash.

@Lord_Sesshy I kind of doubt that the majority will by both. Most people will buy only 1, the one they like the most. And then, there is a small minority that can actually afford both without a second thought.

@TigusVidiks @Lord_Sesshy Most gamers I know buy all the consoles. Gaming is an expensive hobby, and the hardcore gamers look for ways to afford getting all systems because they are fans of games, not hardware manufacturers. Without the games, these consoles are nothing but dust collectors.

I am glad sony made this statement. If the same is with MS i also applaud them but before i do i wish they made a specific announcement about it. The whole leaked memo thing is just shaky at best. Hopefully these guys come to the conclusion that you cannot just screw with the customers, and that what is the norm for the PC gaming market is not the norm for the console market.

These announcements are steps in the right direction, but there are still tons of questions i have next generation. i can see one bad move by either company bricking their system.

@racerxgundam The announcement will come when they have there press event. It would make no sense for Microsoft to have a press event about a console they haven't announced yet. That would just be stupid. That's like apologizing to a girl that you are asking out for a date for trying to get to second base with her on the upcoming date she hasn't accepted yet.

@ominous_prime @racerxgundam Like they could make some statements, granted its not the same as a press conference but i do feel that they are oddly mum on the topic. Personally i don't think either system does anything too brazen, but a quickie blur from someone associated with the development wouldn't hurt.

@racerxgundam @ominous_prime They will likely talk about it at the press event this month. It just from a marketing point of view, it would be a bad idea to starting making comments on something you haven't officially announced yet. It doesn't set the right tone to start out in defense of something that is a rumor.

@racerxgundam shaky indeed, it might as well be a fanboys fake message.

That's the most likely even, as there are dozens of credible sources claiming the opposite
