Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

Sony has issued an encouraging but indecisive response to Microsoft’s invitation to unite the online networks of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One within certain games.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

I think people are making this a bigger deal than it is, the avg casual player who just plays COD, NBA 2k or Madden won't even care or notice. Its when multiplayer of exclusives WHEN SHIT GETS SERIOUS AND INTERESTING!

@barnonefadeall: That's a good point. My guess is that console exclusives won't be available for for cross platform (between Xbox and PS4).

Surely this is the death-knoll of the X1.

No way M$ would have done this if the X1 was even able to stand on its feet with out M$ propping it up. Not sure if I want it though. Always found more screaming kids on Xbox than PSn!!

The article acts like MS came out and said it wanted to do this with Sony. Making Sony sound sketchy because they didn't add the world "consoles" to theiron response. Sony has been there with the cross platform with pc for awhile.

So basically it's up to the developers, which is kind of what we knew before. So basically Sony and Microsoft are both willing it's if the developer wants it.

@graffitiheart: definitely.. there is the catch though. The auestion is, will the developers agree to run this only on xbl? (Vecause that is what msft just asked for, crossplay on xbl or not at all).

I'm not sure about it yet. The reason being is that both Sony and MS do these play here first crap. CoD did that whole month thing. Plus, I don't need more a$$holes from either Sony or MS online. People think the fanboys are bad know. What until you have ps4 vs X1 online gaming. It will be a mad house. The way I see it right now is its something MS is trying to do to get more sales. Sony has done just about everything right with the PS4. I like that they are separated. I see as more games for. But I think is will also open the flood gates with games just adding MP just so they can get try and get a few extra sales.

@face76: how is it bad to give a choice. MS said they will give you the option if you only want to play Live players. I'd like to not have to buy 2 copies of games to play friends on both systems.

Enough of the Fanboys, just think of the potential it could have to games with a dying online playerbase. games that were empty and barren online would be more active, this is something video games need. I honestly couldn't care less that there will be more more children, because the same goes for adult gamers so consider both sides. (PS4/PC user)

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” So did the Xbox 360 on the same game. Quite remarkable really, if you think about it. I am more concerned with cross platform play with PC games, due to dying MP being the main factor of me buying console versions over PC versions. This news does have me excited though.

@ItchyIsVegeta: really??? The xbox 36p did it in 2002? 3 years becore it existed???? Lol.... the 360 didn't even do it at launch when this game had already been out for years. It took a few more years to arrange the deals for msft, and to get a working version for the 360 running.... and it was not xbox doing it.. it was sony....

At least look up the stuff you want to talk about, you might look less foolish.

Sorry this is a very good move for all gamers don't understand the issue we all play games regardless of Platform all have there benefits and pitfalls, but its about uniting gamers, so Sony stating the following as per the article "PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,”

by this above statement they have already sorted this to work with MS as most game PC's are MS running?

So makes no sense all gamers should just see the benefits of this move I am all for it : )

As a gamer I find the idea to be good if not great, although, most of the time PC users will have the advantage and since this is coming from MS, I know there will be a catch that will affect consumers as well.

I can't exactly predict how it will affect the respective companies but it surely falls within Microsoft's latest aggressive expansion. Possibly they are trying to breath some life into the sinking ship that is XBOX, but on the other hand, the devaluated the brand themselves by moving the focus to computers and smartphones via their store.

The fact alone that they are willing to do this, although seemingly great for us consumers, shows the deviate from the XBOX being a competitive console but rather, the smallest gog in their UWP. I bet you will need an MS app of some sort in order to cross play with XBOX or PC users, which expands Microsoft's general grasp in entertainment but not XBOXes in particular. At best, the XBOX brand itself will just keep the old guard, who were about to switch but decided not to, due to the expanded matchmaking between consoles and PC.

Sony has no real answer to this...its just a standard sentence which you can include for 200 other topics.

Sony was cought unprepared to this MS move and will likely not allow any crossplay to X1.

MS isnt doing this for the good of gamers in first place(but it could be a historical breaktrough) and Sony isnt really " its for the players" like we see with the EA access and Ps2 game ports

@sladakrobot: yup, party, on several games, unless you thing a few hundred million people having the ability to play together as something small (which is funny, because you are all for a few million from xbl joining in.... a drop in the bucket by comparison....).

Only now does msft want to play, but only under their control. Msft have been the hinderance in cross play since day 1. See... when a developer makes a game for all platforms, and msft says "nope, wont play with ps or nintendo or sega"..the developer has no choice but to isolate msft. It gets worse, msft then says "and if you make the ithers play together and leave us out, we will have to have a legal fight for delivering a different quality product". Now msft has slightly shifted to "ok, cross play, but only on xbl, not on anybody else servers (which means you'll also have to donbusiness with us to use and maintain said servers)".

This makes no multiplat developer ever want to include msft in a cross plat game. Imagine how many games we could have already llayed together in??? This leaves the only ones willing to do it, the ones who have NOTHING to do with msft, and so it has ever been.

It's ok, facts don't have to hurt so much, just accept them.

@Mirimon78: lol i like those facts...several hundred million people?

Maybe several hundret thousand is the right number? Why dont you check player online numbers over that crossplsy games? As usuall, you take numbers out of your ass?

FF11...erm...DC universe...erm...lately FF14...Rocket League...now SF5...maybe i forgot a game or two.

These are exceptions...out of 200 games, one is crossplay.

Sony started a party lol

Why arent COD,Star Wars,Black Ops,Rainbow Six crossplay if Sony invented crossplay?

Commend to Microsoft they are so good lately especially when they could have talked to sony before announcing it. This makes them look good while they were the one who was really against this in the first place.

This statement says it all. "Open minded to partnerships." The crucial thing about partnerships is that both sides benefit equally.

PS4 and XB1 multiplayer crossplay would not benefit Sony at all, but MS would have a huge benefit. Allowing xbox gamers to play with their friends who have jumped ship to PS4 would stop them jumping as well. It would also stop people jumping to the larger user base because the multiplayer matchmaking servers have more people to play with. There is nothing worse than a ghost town server due to a small user base. People just desert it and never return.

@justerthought: Its not like xbox player base is tiny it has sold more than 360 in same time span and more than original xbox total. And it would help PlayStation maybe developers will stop including peer to peer hosting if they can run same servers for everyone. Looking at u cod
