Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

First of all microsoft would never do it. They will maybe do it for rocket league only because ps4 players have been playing with pc for a long time, but for now they just want to look good in the headlines. Sony i hope won't do it because that will be a huge plus for xbox but a bad thing for ps4: xbox one has very few players on online games but with ps4 players they would have no problems. Ps4 has already more than enough players but joining with xbox the appeal of way more players in mp games goes down the drain making the effectively xbox more desirable while ps4 less desirable. It is a very known issue the one that xbone has few players in their online games like in mgs5 and bf hardline which were graveyards at launch and had less players than on ps4 right now after these games lost the interest of people.

@kato93:the only thing ps4 has over xbox one is more players, most people ive talked to have said the only reason they even got a ps4 instead of an xbox one was because their mates were getting a ps4, where this started i dont know but it seems all the people that were on 360 (most of the market) would have just preferred to stay with xbox.

In saying that, cross platform online should happen eventually, its a very positive thing for all gamers, think about games with dead lobbies current get and earlier but still are great games, putting the two together would help communities flourish or P.C players getting left in the cold etc. the positives far our weigh the negatives for all of us.

No XIV on Xbox one. They won't connect with Xbox. It's a bad business move for them and we all know it. Im the only one who is saying that this could make them lose money. We all know that is the truth. This is why you guys are not in charge of Sony or any other gaming business because you would rather play games than make more money. Xbox is releasing Scorpio so maybe Xbox is trying to get people on there side. They know Sony won't agree, but they want to be the good guy. People would go to Xbox or Sony depending on the better console for both of them. I like exclusives. THEY ARE GOOD FOR BUSINESS. THIS IS WHY YOU ARE NOT IN CHARGE RIHOKO. Its all about money and they are a business of course they are greedy and I support and like it. A good profitable business is supposed to be greedy. Im greedy.

@zeromanzero: I know they would lose profits. I know Microsoft does not actually want cross gaming. What they really want is their comments being in the news. If this was good for business then they would have done this a long time ago. Competition is good, but connecting both consoles could tip the scales. This is why we don't have all gaming companies combining into one super company. A monopoly would be bad. It is like Nintendo buying Sega who probably would not accept the offer because you can't just buy a company because you want to. They have to agree.

Sony should be jumping at the chance. Letting gamers play together is not going to decrease their profits in the least. Just shows that Sony is as stuck up as their fans. I own all three new consoles and while there are things to like about all three, Microsoft is the only company actually driving gaming tech forward. The constant updates of features their fans have asked for show that unlike Sony, MS actually cares about keeping their fans around. Being in second has driven innovation like opening up online network play to other console owners. Sony in the meantime will just sit there counting console sales and acting like James Cameron. "We're on top, why try anymore?". Don't get me wrong I love me some Uncharted and Bloodborne, just sucks I have to play them on an inferior system. Resolution does not greatness make.

@atlasisaliar: I have all types of ds systems, all gameboys, a gamecube, a ps3, a ps2, a ps4, an xbox, a Wii U, and an xbox 360. Letting gamers play together is bad for profits and you know it. Microsoft is not going for innovation and they know Sony wont accept. This is about making some click bait headlines to get you on microsoft's side.

@atlasisaliar: Hasn't it historically been Microsoft that was against cross-platform play? As the article points out, Sony already allows this, and has for well over a decade. There's a reason Final Fantasy 11 didn't get a release on an Microsoft console until 2006, and there's a reason Final Fantasy 14 still doesn't have one.

If anyone's stuck up here, it's Microsoft.

Why are the majority of the ps4 commentors so rude? Don't we all play games to have fun, show a little bit of our competitive side and just have a a good time? I've got a friend who has been on ps and pc for a long time and the majority of my other friends are on xbl and he whenever we being this up he's always like "Come on Sony just do it". Oh and I won't even mention the fact that games with a low player base will have so much more players, prime example rainbow six siege! Screw console wars, you know what to do Sony, don't hesitate.

I can't believe in this day in age we still have segregation! Awful! I'm calling Jesse Jackson, he is always looking for any reason to start a fight and this is right up his alley!

This is a joke by the way.

I said it before IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME.

The menu could be as simple as this:

FOR example on PC: Choose Networks: -[PC]-[ALL][Playstation]-[Xbox]-[Nintendo]

etc etc....JUST SWAP IN THE NATIVE PLATFORM OF YOUR CHOICE AND HAVE THE OTHERS IN THAT MENU.

So much more gamers of variety and skill levels...and pretty much means almost always active networks with so many gamers around the world playing.Sweet.

Peace.

LOL, there will still be segregation. A majority of the players play fps games. PC players will ultimately dominate console players (xbox one and windows 10). Eventually, there will be complaints about the unfairness and console players would wish to avoid PC players.

The response from Sony is exactly what I expected. They aren't saying no flat-out. They need more time to think about it. So, it could very well happen. I do believe though that if it does happen that it will be certain games and not all new multiplayer games going forward from a certain point.

I'm so tired of the stupid fanboy wars. I own a PS4 and I love it. I really have zero interest in ever getting an Xbox One. If you own and Xbox One and are happy with it - great. It's all about being entertained and having fun. Fanboy wars for consoles are dumb when these people don't even own stock in these companies. I do hope this happens eventually, except when it comes with connecting with PC players with FPS games. We all know that the PC has an advantage with the mouse and keyboard for FPS games.

The way that a lot of the community is reacting to this just shows me how petty, salty, childish and spiteful the modern gaming community has become. Had something like this had been announced pre-early 2000's gamers would be dancing in the streets. Fanboyism, like sexism and racism is just another blight tarnishing gaming's image. Sure there was still healthy competition between consoles back then but it hadn't turned their respectives communities into cancer like it has today.

Also even if this thing does happen (hopefully it will) that doesn't mean you'll see Halo on Playstation, Smash Bros on Xbox and Uncharted on Wii U. More than likely it'll mean that multiplat games CoD, Battlefield etc won't have console specific servers anymore. I don't see any company giving up their major IPs to make this happen.

@RussellGorall: Where did you get the idea that I am a Sony stockholder? If I was, I would buy my own gaming website. Microsoft and Sony are companies, which means that their sole purpose is to make profit, not to do what is best for gamers, even though these two sometimes appear to be in-line with each other. Ask EA if they love to do what is best for gamers. Ask the same question to many other companies alike.

With this said, if you let someone treat you with disrespect and get away with it, you show to yourself that you have no self-respect. Hmmm, I seem to remember something like this when the PS3 was trailing the 360. And the then head dude for Xbox basically said, "No way in hell.". Well, I guess hell just came to be, at least for micro&soft since they are doing so crappy. So much for THIS being 'unprecedented', perhaps they meant for micro&soft, they're finally opening up to such ideas...

Darn, wish I could find an article from back then, but here's one that does touch on it: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/03/why-microsoft-is-finally-pushing-for-cross-platform-online-gaming/

@Caanimal: as bad as psn is i just hope the horrendous lag wouldn't effect everyone. At least you could tell whos playing on ps because theyd be skipping across the screen or dropping games. Microsoft stock is doing just fine. sony isnt even a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things. so what are you trying to say? That this would somehow benifit ms by having ps on a unified server? So all the sudden this would help ms sell consoles? Either way i wouldnt dare play a sony game online. Ive learned my lesson the hard way a long time ago.
