On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

Understand both sides of the coin. Sony is looking at the opportunity as pretty scary because they are essentially opening doors to be screwed over and sell less consoles. PS4 and Xbox players buy consoles to play with friends and with PS4 far in the lead, they still have in the back of their mind how they screwed up at the beginning of the PS3. They do not want to make the same mistake again. Also, they are probably wondering why microsoft would be so innovative now that they are losing and never offered or considered while winning. On the other side Xbox is seeing this as an opportunity. They know they have lost this so called "war" so to speak and believe me when I say that the console between the two that is losing, almost always is the most innovative. Think about how much sony listened to the gamers in the ps3 era, it was lovely. Now look at how much Xbox one owners are being pampered. Of course we aren't able to get everything we want regardless of console.

However this is the piece I take from Xbox's open invitation. Maybe this could be the beginning of a greater collaboration between PC, PS4 and Xbox. If Sony and Microsoft were to collab on a project such as a new console or something, the possibilities would be endless. At that point they would be able to focus greatly on GAMES, which is all we ever want. I say break the barriers and see what happens. You only get one life SONY

@sonic4893: Your last line is brilliant, i always spoke about this with my buddies (not only under the gaming perspective); co-op of all gaming companies to make a single uber home console and maybe an handheld one, focusing on top notch games, and start making hard walls for crappy indie shet; but considering the greedy nature of humans i could be tempted to think microsoft just want to get some more money out of this.

i think this idea should've been decided before titanfall was released, it would've been great if PS4, PC , and Xbox one gamers would've been able to play together, i've read an article about it a while back saying they plan to do it for titanfall 2 but i highly doubt it since my friends say that PSN, Xbox LIVE and PC all use different network ports. and what's disappointing is that microsoft could've been the first to do it and should've but they never did, PC players and Xbox players would've been able to play games like Call of Duty, GTA, Titanfall. but than you got games that are on consoles only Destiny being one of them and than you got console exclusives that would also be awesome for cross-platform such as Halo but Halo 2 was the last one that Microsoft released to PC

than again, some thing tells me that if they do go along with this, they'll come up with some sort of new membership for all 3 platforms that gamers will have to pay to play, and console membership like PSN and XL wont count and they'll have to pay a separate fee just to be to cross platform, for example, if you got an active XL membership and you want to play against PC or PS players you'll have to pay a separate membership fee to be able to do so which would be very disappointing to alot of people that are already paying to play

If you want to play with the os4 community get a ps4! Simple. Ps4 players don't want to be thrown into the same community as the Xbox community, just a bunch of loud mouth children. It is NOT in the PSN community's interest. We already have a community big enough to support its self.

Avatar image for joeyl853

@andystephenson: you do realise their are more children on ps4. For 1 it has a larger install base and being that ps4 was 100$ cheaper most kids bought ps4. Xbone is a much better option for home theatre/media with the cable bypass and streaming media from pc. Reguardles the whole loud mouth kids argument is ridiculous.

I don't know what most of these people are talking about, cross platform gaming would be brilliant, we'll finally be able to play with friends who are on different consoles so let's bring it

Avatar image for G_W_X

@mikeaaml: Exactly. Everyone else who does not see the benefit is just a screaming little fanboy b*tch.

I am a fanMAN of Nintendo and I WANT THIS. I have wanted it for a while as you logically conclude things...you wonder why don;t they network multi-platform games as standard? SO that like you said those who are friends on different consoles can play a multi platform release together.

Obviously first party games are out of the question as they belong to the appropriate company and their own brand ....what we are talking about is MULTI PLATFORM games...they shouldn't be restricted as first party games are ..it has always been a NO BRAINER. Like I said in a previous comment wanted this....it should have been done since ....10 years ago/two console generations ago IMHO. heh.

@mikeaaml: I agree I'm surprised too see how many are against it. For PC player w mouse and keyboard skill the get their fodder for everyone else they get to have fun with their friends regardless. This would literally only bring benefits and help to bring a fractured community a little closer together.

Avatar image for _Roo_

@Zerabp: . I am a PC gamer with a top of the line rig and 4K monitor. It would be great to be able to play with my friends that still play on consoles. But there would need to be some mechanism to level the playing field between the different mediums. It seems the higher frame rate, resolution, field of view, and all around better performance of the modern PC (as well as higher precision of KB and mouse) could lead to balancing issues. Especially if we are talking FPS. PC gamers already constantly whine that to many games are dumbed down for consoles. If they started limiting player options on the PC for cross platform play the PC elitists will never shut up.

@_Roo_: aim assist can handicap for consoles.

they should make a team based online multiplayer where you get sent to a team depending on what you are using, and make it super competitive, like some sort of strategy/shooter

@captnforever: Yup, like they could have PS4 vs XboxOne teams on COD/BF. That would be cool.

Do it Sony! This this would help so many smaller game communities that are playing the same games online but on different platforms.

And. I would have to buy slightly fewer copies of obscure/non-popular games for my friends to get them to play with me. XP

I wonder if that means online play with Steam as well? Otherwise people who play UWP games won't really have many others to match with.

Avatar image for blackace

@fanboyman: + STEAM. Every PC and STEAM game will have a chance to come to XB1. That would be awesome. So many games and many of them at a cheaper price too.

As for this network merger this would be great. Right now everyone who owns The Division on PC, XB1 and PS4 would be able to play against each other at any time. That would be awesom.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@blackace: How will Steam ever come to X1? It's not a UWP app and neither are the games it launches.

Wow so many pathetic childish comments in here. Cross platform, not just with Sony, is a great idea to expand the gaming world. Playing with your friends, no matter what device they use, is a great thing. Many have both consoles or have a PC. Now will it eventually get there? I don't know. But at least someone broke the ice about it. We'll wait and see.

Avatar image for Mirimon78

@UziKill: the ice was broken over a decade and a half ago... it has remained broken since. This is not cross play as you think it, it is not public and free. They, msft, want everybody else to come to them, to come under control of msft on xbl... even if you could overlook that control, on a poor performing network, it is unlikely to be free.

Avatar image for moonco

@Mirimon78: If Sony falls into this trap, the next step for MS is getting third party publishers who released exclusive games on PS4 to port them on Windows 10 and X1 all for the love of cross platform play.

This will never happen, Sony offered this an age ago and MS turned it down. Now MS have a worthless community of about 5 people that want the deal to leach of Sonys community.

Don't do it Sony. It's not a good deal for you guys. Just let them dissapear.

Avatar image for blackace

@andystephenson: LMAO!! 5 People? More like 50 million people and that doesn't even exclude PC. If Sony doesn't do it, it'll be their loss as most Win10 PC & XB1 games will all be cross platform in the future. Sony will be left behind with their 6-7 cross platform titles where most of them are MMO's.

Avatar image for andystephenson

@blackace: lol sure 50 million. All playing on a hand full of Xbox ones, sure mate. Who cares who's playing on a failed windows phone lol or 360. that's irrelevant. MS are getting desperate. It's pretty obvious.

@blackace: no, its 48 million at peak ,INCLUDING PC, and windows phones, tablets, xb360 and the xb1... in contrast to sony who are now at 283 million on 5 platforms..
