Iconic slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer may be getting a new film soon, with Sony Pictures enthused by the success of last year's Scream sequel, Deadline reports. Do Revenge director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is reportedly attached to the project, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to reprise their roles.

The original 1997 film followed four young friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer, one year after working together to cover up a supposedly deadly car accident. The film got a sequel in 1998 with both Hewitt and Prinze returning, and a third instalment in 2006 with an all-new cast.

It's not clear at this point what the plot of the upcoming sequel will be, but like the recent Scream sequel will see legacy cast members passing the torch to new characters in a bid to reinvigorate the franchise without simply rebooting it.

Robinson and writer Leah McKendrick came up with the film's concept together, though McKendrick will be writing the film's script.

Sources say the project is currently in early development, with Sony declining to comment on the report.
