Sony Reportedly Unsure If There Will Ever Be a PlayStation 5

Lorne Lanning asked Shuhei Yoshida, "What does the PlayStation 5 look like?" He replied, 'You mean if."

One of the more interesting storylines in gaming this year has been the rumors and reports about Sony and Microsoft potentially planning to launch new hardware before the existing cycle is over. Not everyone has been pleased with the idea, but now gaming veteran Lorne Lanning has come out in support of it.

No Caption Provided

Lanning said on the latest Game Informer Show [YouTube link] (via NeoGAF) that, back in February 2015 at the DICE event, he asked PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida at a private dinner to give him some details on what the PlayStation 5 might look like. Yoshida's response surprised Lanning.

"I said, 'What does the PlayStation 5 look like?' And he said, 'You mean if...' And I was like, 'Whoa. Are you willing to say that on stage?' And he said, 'Yeah, it's an if.'"

This topic didn't end up being discussed in the Lanning/Yoshida presentation at DICE 2015, however. You can watch the full presentation here on YouTube.

If Sony is indeed working on something like a PS4.5, it's an idea that Lanning would support, it seems.

"It was a really interesting thing; he didn't give me a clear answer, but he's hinting at, 'We need to be more agile, none of us know what the future really looks like so how do we adapt to it faster?'" Lanning said. "To me, that's the way he was sort of thinking about it, which I think is the right way think about it."

Gaming consoles are quite different from smartphones, which are typically upgraded on a yearly basis or so. Consoles, on the other hand, usually remain viable for 5-7 years. This longstanding cycle could change, however, if the reports about upgraded PlayStation and Xbox consoles prove accurate.

"The idea that you're going to release a piece of technology that's going to last for seven years into the future is becoming I think less and less viable even though the generations of platforms are lasting longer," Lanning said. "So it seems like it's in conflict."

Just this week, another report claimed Sony's new, more powerful PS4 was indeed real, while a follow-up story said development kits are going out now to developers.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new hardware, as a recent report claimed Microsoft was experimenting with a "variety" of new Xbox device prototypes. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also said Microsoft will eventually "come out with new hardware capability during a generation." The executive never said it would be this generation, and has made it clear that you won't be opening up your Xbox One with a screwdriver to install new parts.

Additionally, more recently, Spencer said Xbox fans should not expect an Xbox One and a half.

Not everyone is thrilled with the idea of mid-cycle hardware upgrades, however. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk recently said such a thing would be a "gigantic pain in the ass" for developers and consumers alike.

I didn't see the need for a "next gen" console 4 years back, and only recently bought my PS4 Uncharted 4 bundle for the game. And for all the newer games that will not be availabe for my old PS3 or Xbox 360s. I am happy with my PS4, and am looking forward to virtual reality with the PSVR helmet (formerly known as Morpheus), and it appears the PS4 has sufficient computing power for it. I see no reason whatsoever for any future consoles. I would love someone to tell me why any further consoles would be needed?

Theres a difference between buying a new phone after a couple of years and buying a new console. For one your given the option to make small $20-$40 payments for that upgraded phone and its highly unlikely MS and sony are going to be selling their upgrades for under $400 or $500. Most average people are not going to be spending that much every year or two to play games. I'd rather buy a high end graphics card for my PC and be set for that 5 years or so, even at the end of that 5 years I'll still be playing the latest games just at low settings and they'd probably still look better than on the console.

3 year life cycles are a joke. And it can't be a coincidence that both Sony and Microsoft leaked this idea out at around the same time. There has to be some sort of collaboration between them. This is essentially price-fixing. I welcome the next console crash.

this is a huge pain in the ass, i bought a ps4 almost 3 years ago because i found a really good sale, but only have 1 game and a couple of demos i play on it. Yet now they are making another system, that's BS. They should just make the systems upgradeable.

Frankly, I really wouldn't mind if both Sony and MS (and even Nintendo) would drop their hardware an start developing their exclusives on one platform, PC. Or if they make unified console next time, not unlike Japanese manufacturers had MSX standard back in the days.

However, that PS5 remark can mean a lot of things. For example, Sony might be planning to do backward compatible consoles for foreseeable time, and in order to symbolize that compatibility with PS4, next few consoles will be PS4.something, or PS4 (Name). Next one is PS4 Neo, after that PS4 Trinity, after that... there are some solid inspirations for that, like Apple's OSX. Or Microsoft's Windows 10, with no plans for Windows 11 (but constant updates of Windows 10).

Eventually... if compatibility is here to stay, Sony might even drop numbering. Each few years there will be new Playstation.

Might be other possible explanations that didn't cross my mind... yet.

@haze0986:

Yea MLB the Show is superb and nails MLB experience every year for me. The PC won't be able to do that, as there isn't any good baseball games out there. Sony really monopolized on the baseball sport video game, leaving Xbox out of luck.

"gigantic pain in the ass" because we're too lazy to develop with flexibility in terms of performance and quality like we have to do with any PC game.

This is Sony strategy to push thier 4K TV's....be smart about it, this will eventually backfire at Sony. A small upgrade that realistic you still won't be able to play 4K games but will play 4K video is a push to bring back alive thier TV division. Stop buying into this whole PS4.5 thing, it's a small upgrade nothing huge about and games won't look or perform that far different then you think. If they do this, I for one will NOT be one to hop on board the hype train. I will continue to enjoy my PS4 for years to come on my 1080p TV and will upgrade both TV & console when there is a TRUE upgrade console that can play 4K gaming and when there's more 4K content in the market.

@lonesamurai1: You shouldn't really complain - no one forced you to buy PS4 before GT7 was even anounced, if GT7 was your main reason to buy PS4 in a first place. I sad many times before that your decission was, at best, weird.

@lonesamurai1: PD is definitely over-pampered, over-spoiled and extremely self-indulged developer. That is hardly a news - we all remember how long it took them to do GT5, and how game turned out to be. it wasn't downright bad, in fact I enjoyed it a lot - but game in development for 6 years and $60 million budget, it certainly could have been much better. If nothing else, amount of recycled cars and tracks should have been much lower, if not completely absent.

I gave them some credit for PS3 being bastard to code and optimize for, and I also do realize that late GT6 could have postponed development of GT7.

But 3 years after GT6 was released and still no solid release date for GT7, not a single screenshot, let alone in-game footage (alpha at least)... and then almighty boss comes out and says they are keeping legacy (standard) cars. I mean, really. From what I can see, public opinion is very much against those ugly PS2 pixels... and PD had a lot of time since 2004, when GT5 development has started, to convert all cars to premium models... and yet we are still going to see standard models..?

There is still chance that PD will surprise us all, but I'm not holding my breath right now. I was actually quite keen on getting X1 for Forza, but since MS announced future Forzas (and other X1 exclusives) on PC, I'll definitely wait a bit longer and see how that goes, since I already have decent gaming PC beside PS4.

But you know what? Considering all of above, your decision to buy not one but two PS4 on release, primarily for GT7, looks even sillier. And in my book, when I do something silly, I blame myself first. But then, if one game was my primary motive to buy console, I wouldn't buy console until game is out and confirmed to be good, and then I'd probably buy bundled console and game. By the time GT7 is out, that bundle might as well be with PS4.5, thus you'd get higher/more stable frame-rate, better AA, VR support without visual sacrifices. See? You did silly thing with buying PS4 when you did.

@lonesamurai1: OK, then - you and your son did silly for buying PS4 when you did. Better? ;)

What other exclusive racers were you expecting? MotorStorm was never on the table, with Evolution focusing on DriveClub. All other I can think of are multi-platforms.

I had great run with DriveClub, by the way, but if it wasn't your cup of tea, well, bad luck.

MS is definitely doing better with racers, so far. No arguments there.

"No console company..." is pointless argument. At some point, no console company did BD. Now most do. Consoles didn't do on-line. They all do now. Consoles were for gaming only. Now they all have multimedia, apps. They had cartridges and no HDDs. Not any more. Consoles concepts are changing. I think it is for the best. With so many people pointing out that consoles do get long in the tooth during their lifetime, it was only matter of time when will some of manufacturers try different approach. Anyway, new PS4.5 will take a few years to reach original PS4 user base. At least during that time, original PS4 will be receiving as much love from devs as it does now - no one will risk alienating 30+ million users just so that they focus on much lower number of PS4.5 users. Eventually, PS4 will have lifetime as expected. Only it will not be the only PlayStation during that time. And if my PS4 dies, I will be happy to have upgraded model available. Even if it keeps on, at some point I will make it into my living room BD player, or sell it, or give it to someone and get myself 4.5. Or I'll just keep it for multiplayer games, if my wife or guest feels like playing something with me that is not split-screen.

I'm actually quite thrilled with 4.5 announcement.

@lonesamurai1: That is really matter of taste. I enjoyed Bloodborne, TLoU remastered (skipped on PS3 release), Little Big Planet 3 (great to play with kids), DriveClub... even Second Son and Killzone 3, even if they could have been better. And of course, couple of Multiplatform handfuls that I decided to play on PS4. Currently looking forward Uncharted 4 and Ratchet & Clank.

X1... would definitely like to give Forza a few turns (probably a few months of my life, tbo), but not much more was released to my taste. I lost interest for Halo after Halo 2... not sure why. GoW, maybe? Played onle 1st one on PC... Quantum Break looks interesting, regardless reviews... that's mostly it. Forzas are coming to PC, and QB already is. So that takes a solid chunk of X1 appeal for me.

Out of curiosity... what's in it for you from Nintendo? since you are primarily racing fan. Surely Mario Cart is too arcade for you.

@lonesamurai1: I was always in PC environment (and before that, home computers)... my parents thought that ZX81, Spectrum and Commodore 64 were better than consoles of that age, since they could provide more than just gaming. Reflecting on that, they were quite forward thinking.

First console I had - albeit briefly - was original PlayStation in 1998. I swapped my spare Quantum HDD for PS with handful of games. HDD was, if memory serves, 500MB :)

Coincidently, I had traffic accident which ended up with dislocated shoulder, so my right arm was fixed for few weeks in position I could not use for kbd/mouse... but it was fine for controller. I played that PS pretty much from waking up till going to bed, since I was off work. I have stopped playing after I recovered and returned to PC, and eventually I traded it back to a friend I got it from - turned out his son still wanted to play it, only wasn't aware until he lost it. As it often happens with kids.

But anyway, PlayStation got sweet spot in my heart for providing me with gaming entertainment when nothing else could. Time after that, in 2005, I decided to give consoles another chance. it was easy choice - original Xbox was already dying, X360 was not out yet (though it was announced) and Nintendo was on GameCube, hardly present at all in New Zealand... so I got PS2. I didn't play it too much in general, but I did play a lot of Ratchet, GT, God of War and KillZone... a few others... so I wanted to follow up on those franchises and PS3 was way to go.

I didn't play Nintendo franchises when I was kid, so it is not that I dislike Nintendo - it is just that it didn't have chance to become important memory in my gaming life. Or any memory. Still open to give it a chance, especially now with X1 exclusives coming to PC.

I don't have anything against arcade racers - in fact I did play some Sega Racing Transformed - but I do prefer arcade racers with real cars. Probably why DriveClub was agreeable with me. And consoles in general are not primarily about visuals - as you have mentioned - so I don't care if game could look better elsewhere.

I can't understand why you are OK with Nintendo visuals but are so hard on criticizing PS4 capabilities. Which are way above WiiU.

@lonesamurai1: I don't care about consoles' graphics in general, I take them for what they are - affordable gaming machines. Anyway, claims MS and Sony make I see as "friendly" competition, say like with Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru Impreza STI. When any of them boasts that it is faster/drives better, that's against the other one - not in comparison to McLarens and Ferraris of the world.

A little bit of competition is good. I'm quite sure next Xbox will be quite an effort because of that, much better than X1. If X1 failed to deliver, that must be - to a great extend, if not exclusively - down to MS somehow feeling they are on top of the world after X360 success.

The only reason Nintendo doesn't take part in this little reality show, imho, is that they currently have nothing to compete on raw performance level. When Wii U was released, I do recall seeing a few comparisons with X360 and PS3. It wasn't too aggressive, but it was out there.

@lonesamurai1: Some actually did. Though I'd say they were not boasting and opening champagne over those claims, just using X360 comparison to describe where their console is regarding hardware power.

But hen again, you cannot "win" comparing your brand new console to 7 years old X360. Nintendo PR is more than smart enough not to try pulling this one. If they ever release more powerful console in the same generation, we'll se how modest they will be then.

If streaming does not come in next 4-5 years, there will be a new Sony console. I think he is just saying there will be upgrades...maybe a new console every 3 years so they can keep a PS console competitive with PC gaming. Sony would be silly to ignore the changes MS is making and moving towards PC gaming and PC gaming itself getting cheaper. A 7 year console cannot compete with a mid tier gaming PC.

Maybe MS will put out an upgradable console that runs Windows 10, so instead of buy a new console you would be buying parts. Basically a PC with no restrictions to developers like Sony will do with their 4.5 console. An Xbox upgradable console would allow for changing performance settings like a PC, so you don't have to upgrade as you can tweak with your system yourself....will see it in the coming months....the only thing I know is that MS were announcing an Xbox 1.5 and not Sony, all hell would be breaking loose by now lol.

we are not going to release another best selling multi million console and make no more monster profit from it and the over priced old and new games for it.

Or are we destined for the ps4.5, at under par almost 4k, barely running at 60 framed speeds for another 5 years and then the ps6 after that?

I know it doesn't sound like it but i do look forward to the VR kits and i hope they do well, however consoles are going to have to start competing with the pc now and evidently with the ps4.5, the market is already creasing.

Why dont they release a "play-station PC"

Anyone who thinks Sony didn't have a plan with regard to the ps4,5 released after the ps4, VR and 4K res is naive, or anyone who thinks they still dont have one as in "you mean IF", are too, they are here to make money, simple.

It's about time we had a change in the boring console vs. console united vs. PC war. Now there will be a few lordlings pissing on their fellow "console peasants" in the mix too lol.

I'm keeping my fairly new "old" PS4 for now.

@paopumilkshake: That's not the issue here, it's the possibility that Sony might switch over to releasing incremental hardware upgrades instead of whole new, numbered consoles.

These incremental upgrades could go on forever. 10 years from now, instead of the PS5, we might be on the fourth or fifth version of the PS4.
