Sony Reportedly Unsure If There Will Ever Be a PlayStation 5

Lorne Lanning asked Shuhei Yoshida, "What does the PlayStation 5 look like?" He replied, 'You mean if."

One of the more interesting storylines in gaming this year has been the rumors and reports about Sony and Microsoft potentially planning to launch new hardware before the existing cycle is over. Not everyone has been pleased with the idea, but now gaming veteran Lorne Lanning has come out in support of it.

No Caption Provided

Lanning said on the latest Game Informer Show [YouTube link] (via NeoGAF) that, back in February 2015 at the DICE event, he asked PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida at a private dinner to give him some details on what the PlayStation 5 might look like. Yoshida's response surprised Lanning.

"I said, 'What does the PlayStation 5 look like?' And he said, 'You mean if...' And I was like, 'Whoa. Are you willing to say that on stage?' And he said, 'Yeah, it's an if.'"

This topic didn't end up being discussed in the Lanning/Yoshida presentation at DICE 2015, however. You can watch the full presentation here on YouTube.

If Sony is indeed working on something like a PS4.5, it's an idea that Lanning would support, it seems.

"It was a really interesting thing; he didn't give me a clear answer, but he's hinting at, 'We need to be more agile, none of us know what the future really looks like so how do we adapt to it faster?'" Lanning said. "To me, that's the way he was sort of thinking about it, which I think is the right way think about it."

Gaming consoles are quite different from smartphones, which are typically upgraded on a yearly basis or so. Consoles, on the other hand, usually remain viable for 5-7 years. This longstanding cycle could change, however, if the reports about upgraded PlayStation and Xbox consoles prove accurate.

"The idea that you're going to release a piece of technology that's going to last for seven years into the future is becoming I think less and less viable even though the generations of platforms are lasting longer," Lanning said. "So it seems like it's in conflict."

Just this week, another report claimed Sony's new, more powerful PS4 was indeed real, while a follow-up story said development kits are going out now to developers.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new hardware, as a recent report claimed Microsoft was experimenting with a "variety" of new Xbox device prototypes. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also said Microsoft will eventually "come out with new hardware capability during a generation." The executive never said it would be this generation, and has made it clear that you won't be opening up your Xbox One with a screwdriver to install new parts.

Additionally, more recently, Spencer said Xbox fans should not expect an Xbox One and a half.

Not everyone is thrilled with the idea of mid-cycle hardware upgrades, however. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk recently said such a thing would be a "gigantic pain in the ass" for developers and consumers alike.

I'm wondering how all of these Playstation fanboys who've beaten the resolution dead horse to nothingness are going to feel when their 'base' PS4 starts getting straight X1 ports that don't even try for 1080p/30 anymore.

@suicidesn0wman: Why the hell would any game on PS4 be ported from Xbox? The system with the smaller userbase, are you special? The salt is real with you buddy, oh so much salt. Also MS is rumored to be testing out a better Xbox One, but those are just rumors.

@suicidesn0wman: Not going to happen. Development already increases to take advantage of PS4 Hardware over the slog that is X1 with easy patches (As illustrated in the early days) It will just be another patch process. But for those that have not bought a PS4 yet, they will now most likely have 1080p60 games awaiting them over the 720p30 upscaled and input lag ridden trash the X1 outputs. The common denominator now isn't the X1. The market install base is horrid. All publishers now have shifted to develop for the PS4 since the install base is double the size, and they downpatch for the X1's horrible hardware platform or hire a 3rd party to port it down.

@Utnayan: Wasn't talking about people who haven't bought a PS4 yet, only those who already have one.

What makes you think developers and publishers will be willing to eat the extra dev costs when the new platform doesn't offer any 'new' customers? Surely you don't expect them to spend extra time optimizing for the base system rather than making sure the Neo version is the ultimate version. Right? And why would you spend extra money to hire a 3rd party to port the game? The base PS4 and X1 are similar enough that porting wouldn't be that costly.

So from the view of the people spending money to make these games, would you rather build games for 60 million customers combined? Or the 40 million in a shared eco-system? How about in 2-3 years when the numbers are 100 million vs 60 million?

I know if I were the ones spending $10-20 million or more to develop a game I'd be spending that money to maximize the profits from both platforms.

@suicidesn0wman: You're dense developers on PS4 have to go by Sony's guidelines, meaning all games must run as best as possible on both machines. Sony isn't stupid, an almost 40 million player base in PS4 and you want to shaft a device they(Sony) are still paying for? I swear is the idiots that always make stupid comments, this is a business and what you described makes ZERO business sense. Let's check that economic climate while we're at it, it's obvious Sony are looking at VR intensely why else would they entertain the idea of a beefier specced PS4? The games will still run on both devices, you seem to be lost the developers will scale the games for the more powerful device, sort of like how they build PC games. They choose a spec for base game play PS4 and then have a maxxed out set up PS4K. Now you want to tell me that PC developers have been doing this for ages, all of a sudden it's going to be a massive problem for console? BS, they've always been doing that on console...dev console crap all over the consumer devices. Not sure what extra development costs you are referring to, it's literally the same machine but with more of everything ,so please explain yourself. You comment sounds like it would have been plausible back when SNES/Genesis was about, but no these are X86 platforms, so yea save that BS for the farmer.

@SavageEvil: You don't actually believe anyone reads your replies do you? I mean you clearly put a lot of effort into spreading your rage at anyone who doesn't bow to Sony. I just think it would hurt to put all that effort in knowing no one would ever see anything more than a giant blob of fanboy *********(use your imagination) on the screen.

PS: lol at calling it an amazing plat with amazing games when I've seen you call it a dust collector multiple times on here. Gtfohwtbs

@fedor: Sure, it's collecting dust right now, that'll change on May 10th. But that's because I haven't had much of a reason to use it. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy the system, or that I think it's trash. The truth is that I don't use it because I got tired of running into people like you. I'd be on Destiny or R6: Siege, ask a friend when we were going to finish the Halo 5 campaign, and people would start bitching and moaning about it.

It'd be nice to go back to the days when people were just happy to be gaming online together. I still have fond memories of playing SOCOM 2 on my PS2 while running MotoGP on the Xbox at the same time to use it for Party Chat without having to press a button to talk. We'd destroy some people for a few hours on SOCOM then jump back to the Xbox and go racing, no one ever thought "System Y is better than System X" because it wasn't important.

@suicidesn0wman: I don't know if you have noticed but I really don't say much negative things about Xbox. I do about MS and it's executives, mainly concerning there pc gaming and OS development. I think it's shit. When it comes to Xbox I don't see a reason for me to personally own one, but I don't dislike it either. But hey, I agree with your 2nd paragraph.

PS: never once spoke over the Mic or sent a message on my ps4, so you weren't running into people like me.

Modern games are too expensive to develop and disappoint too often for them to continue much longer. Indies will stick around. PC gaming (I'm a console gamer, so don't start with the elitist comments) will become the main thing. Consoles are just kind of pointless. It's expensive to buy a lot of consoles and games take FOREVER to develop. PCs evolve faster than consoles and you're not stuck with one outdated piece of hardware for 8 years like the PS3 and 360. I'm not a graphics nut either. I'm just saying that PCs are the standard these days. Consoles are outdated the day they ship, pretty much. And there's only a few games worth owning this generation.

Sorry for the rambling comment, but I think I'll stick with my PS2 and Dreamcast and N64. ;)

@srfilk86: You haven't checked the prices on those retro games yet have you? You might be able to get a few games pretty cheap on the DC & 64, but a lot of the good games are as much or more than the next-gen games.

Another wildly misleading argument: "The idea that you're going to release a piece of technology that's going to last for seven years into the future is becoming I think less and less viable..."

No one asked for seven years. People want five. Five years. Not seven. It's this sort of strawman argument that should not be tolerated. It's a lie. We got 8 years out of last gen because of the terrible economy and while the economy still stinks, people have learned to adjust. We should be back on track for five years.

Of course Lorne Lanning is an upper class individual with no understanding of the middle or lower class, so of course he's happy to spend $900 every year on new consoles.

@tpoppapuff: What the hell are you smoking? "People want five years"? Do you have any idea how pissed a lot of people were when the original XBOX had only four years? The GameCube barely lasted five years, and people were pissed because it was abruptly kicked to the curb due to the Wii. No one is DEMANDING a new console every five years. That's just how the cycle has been since the 90s.

And for the record, the economy had nothing to do with last generation's life cycle. NOTHING. The XBOX 360 came out in 2005, and the PS3/Wii came out a year later. The US recession hit in 2008 and lasted through 2010, yet game/console sales barely stagnated at all. In fact, PS3 sales saw a surge in 2009 and started gaining on the XBOX 360's lead. IN 2009. The same year people (like myself) were dealing with furloughs at work and fearing layoffs.

The leap in technology between consoles would be the key factor in the extended generation gaps. Compare the last seven console generations to each other and look at how different each one was. Also, take a look at the leaps in visuals and interactivity. The PS5 can't be just a machine that has EVEN BETTER GRAPHICS AND PERFORMANCE, because they're getting closer and closer to hitting that ceiling. You have to factor in new budding tech as a possibility. Will it incorporate VR? AR? How much better will internet streaming be by 2020? Why race out the door to create a new XBOX or PlayStation for 2018 when the technology won't be all that much different?

You aren't an analyst. And you don't speak for the majority of gamers. You mock Lanning about the understanding of the lower/middle class, yet you follow it up by making absurd claims like blaming the economy for the last life cycle. Gaming is a global industry... not just the US.

@Xirtahm: Uh, when don't have money for nonessential items, like consoles, they tend to put bigger priorities, like food, over nonessential items, like consoles. I don't why that's so hard for you to understand. And your anecdotal fallacy of sales doesn't convince me otherwise. Further, the recession "ended" in 2010, but the economy did not in fact fully recover by the end of 2010 as your statement suggests. That's why people weren't clamoring for new consoles. For some, they had scrimped and saved and finally bought consoles just shortly before that point, so while the new generation started in 2005, that does not represent when the majority of gamers bought into that generation.

And because apparently you need to be told this, four is not five. Four is actually less than five. People want at least five years out of their console, that doesn't mean they need six or seven or ten. Your argument is bunk.

People complained about the GameCube because when it was replaced, it didn't seem any different power wise from the Wii and it appeared to threaten the way people played games and by extension the type of games people fell in love with. Now of course there were adamant Nintendo defenders from the beginning, but a lot of the angst and fear of replacing the GC with the Wii is that we would no longer get the games we loved and replaced with motion controlled games. Of course in retrospect it's easy to see that the anger and fear wasn't worth the attention it received as traditional console gaming proved it wasn't going to be replaced, but don't misrepresent the outcry as something other than what it was.

Consoles have always been a pissing contest between brands. And while you may think consoles will never get better graphically and therefore performance as well, that's just a poor understanding of what performance and power actually is. Power isn't just graphics, it opens up the type of games developers can actually make. Currently, most games are limited by a 1.6GHz, 6.3-core processor (devs only have dedicated access to 6 of 8 cores and in certain circumstances partial use of a seventh core) because unless you're a PC only developer, most developers are going to design around accommodating a PS4/X1 because that's where the majority of your sales are going to come from.

You talk about AR/VR, but you know what the current most limiting aspect is for PSVR? Raw power. You need a machine that can output full HD at 90+ fps without compromise to the game design. Currently the PS4 and the NEO are incapable of doing that. Now, in two years where it can become feasible in mass producing an APU with stronger stronger equivalent CPU and GPU cycles where you can sell it as part of a $400 console, that's when they should be be offering a PS5.

Streaming won't be viable until the technology switches to an all but fully light-based intermachine communication method due to the delay involved. Even then you would need to have a datacenter close by to avoid further latency issues. Two independent revolutions are necessary for this to become a reality. Until then, local processing will remain to be the norm, hence the console market not being threatened in that regard.

Streaming video games would be awesome, but it's not viable right now, and will not be in 5-10 years. So they WILL release a PSV. And at minimum, a PSVI too, as even if they want to stream everything, they'll prefer a custom made console that is MADE for this, not an app on a console that was made for something else.

This is a disastrous choice from Sony's part.As someone who purchased a PS4 on Jan 2016 after years of saving I'm honestly deciding to quit gaming altogether now and the mindless Sony drones defending this greedy garbage can rot in Oblivion. The fact that so many people are supportive of this idea just goes to show how disgustingly shallow the community has become.Mindless sheeples absolutely p*ss me off. These supporters are the same group of people that aggressively defend Day 1 DLCs and greedy Season Passes and uses the low IQ reply of "lol dis iz biznezz dealz wid et"

Why the hell did Sony not release this particular model in the first place instead of being greedy cu*ts? Asking people to spit out another $400 to actually get a "next-gen" experience(which we were promised to receive in 2013) instead of the very very underpowered supposed-to-be "next-gen" console we got is deeply insulting as a consumer.

Also lot of people here are using the smartphone analogy and all I can say is that analogy is deeply flawed. Most of the apps are barely hardware taxing and nobody buys a smartphone to play solely games and even then the games aren't even taxing. My Galaxy S3 can run 90% of the apps like absolute butter and rarely have I seen it struggle with certain apps.Consoles are a bit more complicated issue.

The thing is games on these home consoles are quite complex and can be greatly impacted by the hardware and consoles being closed ended platforms developers would design their games and direct focus to make as much use of the computational power of the more powerful console and give out a half baked port with sub par FPS and resolution on the older model which will have a strong negative impact on the experience. I'm deeply saddened by this decision from Sony and they have destroyed a unified gaming community and a reason to own a console. I won't be surprised if a major console market crash would occur in a close future and if Sony dies then I am honestly not going to feel sorry in the slightest bit.

@Navardo95: Neo looks approximately twice as powerful on the GPU front. Back when PS4 released this would have cost them almost twice the price to produce. Therefore it would have cost the consumer nearly twice as much, so around £700. I'm pretty sure you would have called that greedy so they cant win.

Bet you anything you like when it came to designing PS4 sony came up with the price that people could afford first then designed the system to get the most power possible for that price, which they did a good job with. I dont really see the problem as it seems Sony have told devs that the extra power can only be used to increase resolution and frame rates. Other than that it'll play the exact same games. Basically if you're not planning on getting a 4k tv anytime soon then there's no real reason to upgrade anyway.

People would get a shitty product on ps4 but with the "same graphics" as ps4.5

@Navardo95: 1) I am sorry it took you "years" to save $349. 2) It isn't a money grab. They needed to have more power to support Playstation VR in the way they wanted people to experience it. It isn't a coincidence that the two products are coming out at the same time. 3) The two systems will be seamless with each other when it comes to the PS Store, PS Plus, and more importantly, online play. 4) None of the games are ever going to push 4K with those specs, so marketing it as 4K capable is false advertising and untrue. 5) The system itself has double the CU's of the original AMD GPU. CPU compute was only relevant for the PSVR. 6) There won't be any games that will only run on Neo. * Unlike * what Nintendo did with the new 3DS where unless you had one, you were not playing Xenoblade. I didn't see the uproar there, and the system was only $150 less than a console. 7) If you own the hardware or feel the need to go out and purchase an entirely new system just to have this "new" capability, who cares. But the value will be determined in just how much developers and publishers can patch their games to take advantage of the new hardware for previous titles. Even so, most every PS4 game already runs at 1080p, so you * may * see frame improvements to 1080p60 (if that). Again, the reason for the change is for playstation VR.

You need to relax. I own all systems. X1, PS4, and Wii U (Along with the handhelds) and a gaming PC. Right now the biggest rip off there was was purchasing an X1. The UI is a slog, the HDMI passthrough for TV causes input lag on games because I cannot disable any post processing like I can do with my LED Display (Game mode) and it is completely underpowered. You should be thanking yourself you didn't buy one of those since it took you years to save up $349. Which means you were saving $14.54 a month.

With that said, technology moves fast and in gaming with VR and 4K demand it is going to have to be more agile to meet those demands. These people are in business to make money, not sit on their ass and provide you with something. You don't like it? Simply don't buy it. I agree with your comments onDLC and I get extremely frustrated with the state of the gaming industry when it comes to that as well. It detracts from quality titles. For that? I just won't buy them. The less people buy, the more they will tank themselves. What we need is a coalition of gamers to boycott all titles like Destiny, or what 2K did to Mafia II. Any company that outwardly cuts content to repackage as DLC even though it is finished to lengthen a revenue stream. Bitch about that instead. Here? Sony is just trying to keep up with hardware demands in a VERY fast moving changing market.

And let's get real about it. Publishers only give a shit and dislike it because they can no longer skate by with cheap development costs post yearf 3 in a consoles life cycle. They can be just as agile.

@Navardo95: My oldest daughter is in the same boat, her PS4 is 3 months old. She is seriously annoyed. You can't really blame Sony though. It's gamers that have been screaming how much this gen sucks and how resolution and framerate are king and game play is secondary or almost an afterthought. Sony is just doing what any company would do, giving people what they asked for. It's not the first time a company has given the single digit salute to current customers in favor of attracting new ones. Apple does it every 6 months or so.

@bdrtfm: It was only a very vocal minority so changing an entire system for those group of people seems very illogical to me.I have already explained the analogy with phones in my 3rd paragraph of my previous comment.

Xbox One has always been thrown into negative light and continuously mocked about and subjected to various controversies in comparison to the PS4. If a console really needed an upgrade it would have been the Xbone and yet Phil Spencer has no plans for an Xbox 1.5 and rather prefers to push the current hardware which I'll have to give him the credit for.

Hell when the PS3 released in 2006 it was completely torn apart by developers for its extremely complicated architecture and even by fans for very poor quality of launch title and especially poor multiplat ports. The PS3s future was looking very grim and yet Sony decided to take a risk and push it along and it paid off brilliantly through the help of very high quality exclusive titles and even multi plat ports kept improving.

PS4 didn't suffer the same fate the PS3 did in launch and had an extremely positive reaction from both developers and gamers like so the fact that Sony is pushing for the Neo model is completely shocking for me.

@bdrtfm: I would say it's a certain faction of the gaming community that has been doing most of the screaming.

@Utnayan: You have a serious misconception of thinking everyone who doesn't agree with your political beliefs is a fat, lazy slog, who wants to do nothing but get everything? You feeling alright there? Maybe go to the doctor, because clearly, you're not thinking straight.

@Utnayan: I'd rather vote for someone who's already run the country than a man who has track record of leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.

@Navardo95: this model would have been $800 back in 2013. That's why they didn't release it. Your whole post reaks of entitlement.

@suicidesn0wman: Why? Because he is telling the truth? It's common sense you idiot. Enough with the console war BS and look at objective fact. Or is that too hard for you while touting around that Bernie Sanders poster.

@Utnayan: You know this is a gaming site right? If you want to argue Trump vs Hillary vs Bernie you might want to go comment on the CNBC or MSNBC websites.
