Sony Reportedly Unsure If There Will Ever Be a PlayStation 5

Lorne Lanning asked Shuhei Yoshida, "What does the PlayStation 5 look like?" He replied, 'You mean if."

One of the more interesting storylines in gaming this year has been the rumors and reports about Sony and Microsoft potentially planning to launch new hardware before the existing cycle is over. Not everyone has been pleased with the idea, but now gaming veteran Lorne Lanning has come out in support of it.

No Caption Provided

Lanning said on the latest Game Informer Show [YouTube link] (via NeoGAF) that, back in February 2015 at the DICE event, he asked PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida at a private dinner to give him some details on what the PlayStation 5 might look like. Yoshida's response surprised Lanning.

"I said, 'What does the PlayStation 5 look like?' And he said, 'You mean if...' And I was like, 'Whoa. Are you willing to say that on stage?' And he said, 'Yeah, it's an if.'"

This topic didn't end up being discussed in the Lanning/Yoshida presentation at DICE 2015, however. You can watch the full presentation here on YouTube.

If Sony is indeed working on something like a PS4.5, it's an idea that Lanning would support, it seems.

"It was a really interesting thing; he didn't give me a clear answer, but he's hinting at, 'We need to be more agile, none of us know what the future really looks like so how do we adapt to it faster?'" Lanning said. "To me, that's the way he was sort of thinking about it, which I think is the right way think about it."

Gaming consoles are quite different from smartphones, which are typically upgraded on a yearly basis or so. Consoles, on the other hand, usually remain viable for 5-7 years. This longstanding cycle could change, however, if the reports about upgraded PlayStation and Xbox consoles prove accurate.

"The idea that you're going to release a piece of technology that's going to last for seven years into the future is becoming I think less and less viable even though the generations of platforms are lasting longer," Lanning said. "So it seems like it's in conflict."

Just this week, another report claimed Sony's new, more powerful PS4 was indeed real, while a follow-up story said development kits are going out now to developers.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new hardware, as a recent report claimed Microsoft was experimenting with a "variety" of new Xbox device prototypes. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also said Microsoft will eventually "come out with new hardware capability during a generation." The executive never said it would be this generation, and has made it clear that you won't be opening up your Xbox One with a screwdriver to install new parts.

Additionally, more recently, Spencer said Xbox fans should not expect an Xbox One and a half.

Not everyone is thrilled with the idea of mid-cycle hardware upgrades, however. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk recently said such a thing would be a "gigantic pain in the ass" for developers and consumers alike.

Maybe a dumb question but... If I have to upgrade a console every 2-3 years or so, why would I favor that option over a PC? Especially when PC has no online fee akin to xboxlive or psn, and you can get your games for dirt cheap on steam or gog? It seems Sony is dropping the main selling point of a console over a pc;: it's cheaper, doesn't need to be upgraded to stay revelant for a while and you don't have to check if your games will be compatible.

@Xristophoros:

A mini-ITX rig connected to an HDTV provides convenience, form factor and ease of use, though some of this is subjective anyway.

PC has its own "exclusives" and console exclusives really haven't been all that great. In the case of XBO, they have been coming to PC. Since XBO titles are releasing on Windows Store UWP, I'd rather MS just keep them.

@Xristophoros: well if things keep going the way they have... Name me 5 good exclusives on ps4/xbone. Convenience is covered by the fact that everyone know how to use a PC. Form factor? Htpc got you covered. Ease of use? See convenience. It's sad but console are becoming more and more a form of underpowered, specialised PC.

@canadian_sharky: infamous, killzone, bloodborne, driveclub, tearaway unfolded, gravity rush remastered, order:1886 (for its visuals and art direction mostly), ratchet and clank, until dawn, disgaea 5, dragon quest heroes... on the way: uncharted 4, last guardian, horizon, final fantasy xv, persona 5, star ocean 5, nier 2, ni no kuni 2, gravity rush 2... and there's a lot more than that.

@Xristophoros: tearaway and gravity rush are port of PS Vita games. Ratchet and clank is a ps2 remake (mostly) disgaea 5 and dragon quest are also on PC. Last guardian I will believe it when I'll see it. Final xv will have a PC port so will persona star ocean, nier and no no kuni. Very little exclusive. Even less good ones.

@canadian_sharky: ni no kuni on pc? not a chance... we may see ffxv and star ocean go on pc, but that is all speculation. you are confirming something that has not happened yet. also, persona has only been on sony platforms since its inception. why do you feel like that will suddenly change overnight? sure, sega is now the publisher and may change it up a bit... but again, that remains to be seen. as of right now those games are sony exclusives. disgaea 5 is only on ps4 as well... you might be confused with the older games recently getting pc ports... you are correct about dragon quest heroes, i missed that one.

@canadian_sharky: It sounds me like you don't actually know what convenience and ease of use means. There is nothing convenient about rejigging parts to fit in a new case, and you have to be nuts to think "everyone" knows how to use a PC. And why anyone thinks messing with hardware incapabilities, driver hijincks, and general instability is easier to use than "put disc in tray, play" is beyond me.

@Barighm: I totally agree with you. But if they come up with ps4.5; ps4.7 etc how is that more convenient than swapping a graphic card? Unless you go for very fancy custum stuff, building a PC is like building a big Lego. I built mine, and if I can do it I'm sure anyone can!

@canadian_sharky: I spent almost $3000 on my monstrosity of a PC. My girlfriend would kill me if I put that in the living room. I tried to remote play to the TV through AC wifi with my surface plugged to the TV, but the experience is just kind of not the best and annoying considering how much money I spent. So yeah for now the xbox stays in the living room.

Streaming will never, ever, ever, ever, compare to local processing. I don't care how fast your net is, or how low the latency is. Nothing will process and render better than local hardware. In an age where everyone loves visual resolution fidelity and demands better and better, streaming is actually dying a slow death on its own.

As for this 4.5 crap. It was just good business on Sony's part. Asshole move to the extreme, but good business. They sold everyone the 2013 equivalent of a toaster so they could keep the cost vs. sale offset as low as possible. Now, they release this laughable exploitation system that, to no surprise, the lemmings of the world are drooling over as they dump more money into Sony's bank account.

When did people stop holding their own money and savings in any sense of value? Sometime around 2000? Everyone is just all too happy to throw whatever money they can at companies these days. No wonder the rate of debt only grows higher and higher every year, as these companies learn better and better how to pull the strings of the lesser intellects of the world.

@datriax: So much salt and not enough actual logical thinking, you complain about lemmings dumping money into Sony coffers but loads of lemmings did that when 360 Red Ring first happened, how many bought a new system to replace the dead ones. Not everyone got free upgrades but I digress you are filled with salt.

PS4 upgrade will sport beefier specs but all games on the original will still work and new games will still run on both, sort of like a Pc more power means you get to choose better visuals and other candy, but you know you have a lot of saltiness in you so you forgot to use logic.

@SavageEvil: Which is all well and good, but those who bought the PS4 originally are going to feel a bit cheated. Especially if they just bought the system in the last few months before this news broke. I know I would of waited if I knew about this before hand in February. But now I am in this situation which is unfortunate. Oh well. I like the PS4, but I am sure playing on the stronger PS4 Neo or whatever they call it would be better.

It's not an out dated idea. The only reason it is an "out dated" idea is because these companies watch cell phone makers do it and get away with it. The main reason cell phones have done it though is due to contracts. You were tied to a 2 year contract, but that meant new people could buy a phone every year, so cell phone makers targeted them. They gave them a "new" phone to buy when their contract was up.

There is no contract in consoles, and honestly it's the opposite. If you are going to force us to upgrade every year to keep up, then why not just buy a PC? The whole purpose of a console is to buy it and have support and games that work fine on it for 5-7 years. Not slightly fall behind year 3, then get canned by 5. The cell phone formula doesn't translate to consoles. If "cutting edge" really was their goal, why do they use subpart parts to begin with?

@sargentpsgamer: The subpar parts thing probably had to do with keeping cost low at initial sale. The PS3 was a huge money drain on the company because of its horrible use of hardware (stupid and mostly useless cell processor...) The PS4 had to go a different route in order to regroup from the PS3's failure, and to capture as much of the market as possible from X-Box in order to keep relevancy. Since Microsoft shot themselves in the foot out of the gate, their gamble paid off nicely. However, now that they are making hand over fist with the PS4, they can release a new version of the system that is probably more in line with what they originally wanted to release but couldn't without taking another severe hit financially. I agree that it is not the best situation, especially for those like me that just got a PS4 not too long ago. However, I don't think you should be worried about it setting much of a precedent in the console market.

It makes sense. Sony has spent a lot of money and man hours tweaking and upgrading their OS on the PS4. They've got their streaming service online, and a formidable sales leads over the Xbox. It makes more sense than starting from scratch. The shift wouldn't even impact their manufacturing process all that much.

@rogue81: While I get your point, I can assure you that this would be a terrible idea by Sony. If Microsoft is watching, they should let Sony dig their grave. To release a console, and then 2-3 years later, tell consumers that just spent upwards of $500 for a console, to now dump that for a PS4.5????? MS could destroy Sony again if they do this. The hardware has not improved much in 2 years, certainly not enough to warrant a replacement. Cell phone companies get away with this due to the carriers offsetting some the financial impact to the consumer. The changes in technology is very minimal to a specific device. Other than aesthetic changes, does your cell phone really work any better than it did 2-3 years ago? I mean seriously, other than a few changes (fingerprint technology, slightly better camera), how much better is a cell phone of today than that of 2013? Not much. I am a PS gamer, but no way would I buy a 4.5 unless they said ok we'll give you $250 credit towards a $399 system that I bought a year ago. If not, I am fine with what I have. I'm hoping this is just a bunch of media blather.

@jbattelle924: Well put. I'd like to add how inexplicably stupid this is in saying that if PS4.5 is only slightly better, then what is the incentive to go out and buy one in the first place? For 2 seconds off my load times? For darker shadows? For better VR? If it is only slightly better, it simply only can achieve what the PS4 achieves--only slightly better. This only adds to the frustration of those that own a PS4: "Great, a new, improved console is out there making mine look old and obsolete, but wait, it's only slightly better, so I guess I don't need it. But it IS out there. Should I buy it? I guess I could, but I'd only see a slight improvement. But now it makes my current machine the old model now. I don't know what to do. ****"

I can only imagine what the devs are thinking. The ones who got into the console space so they didn't have to worry if their game would run or not, and not having to do double or triple the amount of work to scale their games for multiple iterations of a singular machine/platform.

Sony, why are you doing this? Announce PS5 at E3 2017 and call it a day you god damn morons!

@jbattelle924: I can guarantee you that the PS4 Neo will be a lot less than $500. My guess is that at launch it will be at most $300 by the time it comes around. They are not going to make it more expensive than the standard model of the PS4, and by the time it comes out, the PS4 will probably be due for another price drop to $300. They aren't stupid enough to compete against themselves otherwise by having a more expensive console that is only a slight upgrade to one already on the market, especially when the older one will still play every game. Personally, this is probably more of a way to more easily push VR than anything else.

@jbattelle924: If I'm understanding this article correctly, you wont have to buy the 4.5 to play all the games. Similar to how Apple releases the S variant of every new phone, the new hardware offers only a marginal improvement. Adopters of the 6 and 6S get to enjoy faster load times and sharper screens, but people with a 5 or 5S aren't left behind.

Looking at PCs, you don't have to buy the latest graphics card every time Nvidia makes an updated card. Adopters of the 980 get a big boost, but I'm still doing just fine with my 970.

There isn't a new version of Windows for every model PC that's released either, and I think this is what Sony is going for. Flexible software that can operate on various hardware configurations.

@rogue81: I would be fine if, like a pc, I could say, swap out my video card or upgrade my ram etc. I'm not sure that is what Sony wants. They want you to buy an entirely upgraded console each time they make an improvement. That will fail if they do that.

To me it's been inevitable that PlayStation and Xbox will become more a service platform than a hardware platform.

So eventually we'll see the number disappear with the hardware. Then we'll see other hardware vendors providing PlayStation and/or Xbox supported consoles. The services will become available on other platforms, such as PC and mobile.

We're not quite there yet because consoles still need specialized hardware to provide better performance than general computing devices. However that won't be necessary forever.

I expect more console hardware done the big 3 for another cycle or 2, but if this rumor is true. Then I don't expect a number attached to the box. I think this was sort of Microsoft idea with naming it the Xbox One.

What does Sony have? Barely working streaming support to PC? Sony Connect, PS Mobile, and others didn't do too hot. PS Now isn't catching wind. Vue has an uphill climb. And what devices support PlayStation Network still?

I guess it is possible if they go the upgrading route that the generation concept goes away. If they just keep the same architecture and slowly push out better hardware in a console that has similarly incremental visual tweaks at what point does it officially become PS5?

Perhaps they will modify the motherboard so that future upgrades are easier to do and just drop the numbers all together.

I'd be happy with that. Play your new console until you've got your money's worth or it becomes obsolete and then buy a new one in your price range. Seems pretty reasonable. People who WANT to upgrade can do. The rest of us will stick to the similar 4 - 5 year cycle.

As long as it doesn't hamper development too much I'd be okay with it.

@SolidSnakeJT: Logic dictates that planning begins for the next device the moment the current device is released. The fact Shu said if is because they are questioning what the next iteration will be? Should they remain building expensive dedicated machines or start using PC model with their own OS and have a base standard and upgrades provided through AMD. I can see console manufacturers going that route as it's much cheaper to utilize PC massive and already laid out infrastructure of extreme upgradability.

Also when a company is confident, they never say "if", it's always when.

I think the PlayStation 5 will still inevitably happen, as well as the next XBOX... just not for a good long while. You need to create something else than just a bigger machine that pumps out better graphics. What will technology be like in 2020? How will we see games in the next decade? Will VR be bigger than ever, or will it collapse like it did in the 90s? What about AR?

So many things are coming at us, to actually expect another PlayStation or XBOX in this current decade would be absurd. I think Yoshida's response is perfect. He honestly has no idea what gaming will be like in the next few years, and neither do we.

Well, if VR does really take off this time, the console market would take a BIG hit or be the end of it. Makes perfect sense to say "IF" because a lot could happen over the next few years.
