Sony Reportedly Unsure If There Will Ever Be a PlayStation 5

Lorne Lanning asked Shuhei Yoshida, "What does the PlayStation 5 look like?" He replied, 'You mean if."

One of the more interesting storylines in gaming this year has been the rumors and reports about Sony and Microsoft potentially planning to launch new hardware before the existing cycle is over. Not everyone has been pleased with the idea, but now gaming veteran Lorne Lanning has come out in support of it.

No Caption Provided

Lanning said on the latest Game Informer Show [YouTube link] (via NeoGAF) that, back in February 2015 at the DICE event, he asked PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida at a private dinner to give him some details on what the PlayStation 5 might look like. Yoshida's response surprised Lanning.

"I said, 'What does the PlayStation 5 look like?' And he said, 'You mean if...' And I was like, 'Whoa. Are you willing to say that on stage?' And he said, 'Yeah, it's an if.'"

This topic didn't end up being discussed in the Lanning/Yoshida presentation at DICE 2015, however. You can watch the full presentation here on YouTube.

If Sony is indeed working on something like a PS4.5, it's an idea that Lanning would support, it seems.

"It was a really interesting thing; he didn't give me a clear answer, but he's hinting at, 'We need to be more agile, none of us know what the future really looks like so how do we adapt to it faster?'" Lanning said. "To me, that's the way he was sort of thinking about it, which I think is the right way think about it."

Gaming consoles are quite different from smartphones, which are typically upgraded on a yearly basis or so. Consoles, on the other hand, usually remain viable for 5-7 years. This longstanding cycle could change, however, if the reports about upgraded PlayStation and Xbox consoles prove accurate.

"The idea that you're going to release a piece of technology that's going to last for seven years into the future is becoming I think less and less viable even though the generations of platforms are lasting longer," Lanning said. "So it seems like it's in conflict."

Just this week, another report claimed Sony's new, more powerful PS4 was indeed real, while a follow-up story said development kits are going out now to developers.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new hardware, as a recent report claimed Microsoft was experimenting with a "variety" of new Xbox device prototypes. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also said Microsoft will eventually "come out with new hardware capability during a generation." The executive never said it would be this generation, and has made it clear that you won't be opening up your Xbox One with a screwdriver to install new parts.

Additionally, more recently, Spencer said Xbox fans should not expect an Xbox One and a half.

Not everyone is thrilled with the idea of mid-cycle hardware upgrades, however. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk recently said such a thing would be a "gigantic pain in the ass" for developers and consumers alike.

It's funny that we're even thinking about a PS4.5 or PS5 this early. Purely looking at the number of new games released in the last 2 1/2 years --- not remasters or remakes ---- for both the PS4 and X1 the current generation hasn't even started yet. Every time one turns around there's a release about a game delayed until the next year. I don't look at the indie games as game changers as most if not all of them could have been or were also on either the PS3 or 360. I don't think that many of us will ever look at consoles the same way after this console generation is over. I also have a feeling that the number of console gamers will be less come the next gen as we lose confidence in MS and Sony. I do believe there is a possibility that there may not be a PS5 as we have learned to think of console in the past.

@XAF1: One day there will probably be no consoles to buy. You just download games digitally and play them from some sort of internet service with your existing controllers.

@bigdaddyshouse: I agree but I'm thinking that by then we won't even be worrying about 4K tv and bandwidth caps by internet providers. By then I see us using something similar to VR glasses and is self supporting without the need for external hardware to push processing power and graphics computations. I see all of the major processing being done on the other end by the service provider. I don't think it's as far off as we think, maybe 5 to 10 more years but not everywhere will have the infrastructure to support it.

I think xbox is going to just do an xbox one slim with a few tweaks here n there ... I think sony might be setting themselves up for failure with a ps4K ... With Nintendo going to a new console and sony going to a new console this really leaves the door wide open for xbox to release the next gen xbox possibly next year

@wretch1d: At some point though they will probably go fully streamed which means it could be just a controller that connects to an app, or a little streaming box, etc.

@hystavito: If that happens, I'm done gaming. That will mean that any game available on the service will be susceptible to breakdown of licensing agreements and removal due to lack of active player base. You will no longer own games and won't be able to play them if for any reason they are removed from the service. As someone that likes to play old and/or obscure games, that is the video game equivalent of the apocalypse for me.

I think consoles will eventually just be strip down pc's with upgrade able components. And they will run on a Win OS or Linux OS.

@NTenseify: Also if annoying crap like lagging or crashes occur, I know it isn't my fault but the games. On the annoying, albeit uncommon, occasions that these happen on my PC, I have to check background and other things to see if it was me causing all that. Annoying hassle it is. Still though, play most single player games on PC and multiplayer on PS4, since that's where friends are.

Have always supported PlayStation, but if PS4.5 is real, I'll be really disappointed. Would be a big slap in the face to consumers. Don't see the point in releasing one.

Please no. I only just got the ps4 like a month ago, and they're already making a upgrade to it? Another video game crash is going to happen eventually, people are just gonna get burned out of yearly video game releases, 120$ season Passes, Disc locked content (DLC) Day one patches, Broken or buggy games on release, Stupid controllers like that Tony Hawk board or gimmicks like that, Companies shutting down studios like Bullfrog or Westwood and killing franchises. And now yearly micro upgrades to consoles that will make people either pay up, or play an inferior version of a game regardless of cross play intentions.

This is why my new game purchases are getting smaller and smaller because the window to enjoy them is getting smaller, meanwhile my pre-owned purchases have gone up. Nowdays, in a lot of games you don't get 60$ worth of content anymore. It's more like 30$ worth of content with 60$ of the main game stripped away for DLC.

We're in a day and age were games like Aliens Colonial marines can happen because there isn't any checks or balances in this industry to prevent dirty crap like that from happening. That's why Nintendo when they arrived into the video game business invented the seal of approval, Nintendo made it so only so many amount of third party games could be released on the console per year to prevent market flood and spam of cheap and terrible games which destroyed the last generations of video game industry, and we're heading back into the chances of a crash again, but this time it will because people got burned out from being milked.

Games that are worth your money these days are the big single-player games that don't require a forced internet connect to get most out of, or expensive Season Passes. Witcher 3 is a prime example of a great 60$ game busting with content and free DLC vs a bad game like Battlefront, 120$ for the (Full game basically) and a year later they're gonna repeat the same crap and release another half baked game.

I give it about 5-10 years maybe 15. Before Video game consoles are forgotten or overtaken by smart phones and alternate gaming experiences to play games on.

Problem with yearly consoles vs yearly phones also, don't forget phones are small, you can put them in your pocket, you can put your old one in a close drawer. A console takes up lots of room, eventually you're gonna have like five versions of play-station console sitting on your tv stand. IT's just not practical having a yearly console upgrade, if anything it's gonna put people off long-term from buying consoles, because people are going to be more wary of spending money.

You want people to buy a console? First off make the console worth it, and make it a good investment, rather then a yearly throw-away trash bag that gets replaced by the play-station 5.1 or whatever, longer the console stays on peoples tv stands, the more likely they are to buy games. Second, make actual quality games that are worth the money, then more people are likely to go out and buy a console to play the game new.

@thingta42: I agree with you man. If this is the plan they better make these consoles super cheap. Who's gonna fork over 3or4 hundred bucks for a system that will not play current games in a year? Not me.

ah, consoles smh. If this keeps up , consoles will no longer be plug-n-play. for all those console gamers out there. Here's the deal Nvidia is working on an external gpu. that's a plus on our end because we PC gamers don't have to go inside our rigs, still could though( nice to have options). How does this apply to you? Well, If sony or xbox decides to use that technology in the future, (they already use AMD), you could upgrade your console gpu and use them like that. It would be limited because system specs. The con however is that you would have to pay for gpu, subscription and whatever else you have to pay for.

This has been far and away the least impressive console generation in terms of advancement over the previous gen, and now we get rhetoric that the cycles need to get shorter. I want to hear how consoles are going to be replaced so quickly when it often takes 3+ years to make a AAA game. Who would make such an investment at that point?

I don't think this is even worth speculating about until we have at least a year of commercially available VR behind us. Sony won't release another full-fledged console (as opposed to a minor upgrade like 4.5) until Fall 2018 at the earliest. And they're going to need all of 2017 just to determine what sort of gaming market and potential exists with VR.

Not to mention, it's still unclear if 4k will become a broad consumer standard, or a niche luxury market for people with enormous televisions (meaning, 60 inches or larger).

Good, maybe a new company will release a good product then.

I have been a loyal fan of Sony though all of the Play stations, but this generation of gaming is horrible and it needs to change back!

That's totally fine by me. My PS4/Xbox One is and will be my last consoles from both Sony/MS anyways, even if Sony or MS do happen to actually announce new console, I won't buy them. From this point on, it's Nintendo/PC/handhelds only for me.

If this becomes the norm, then they will have to cut console prices to around 200 at most.

People are only willing to pay 400 bucks for a console if they think it will last them those five years. If I have to upgrade every few years I am not dropping 300-400 dollars.

Sounds like corporate talk...why talk about ps5, when the ps4 is still selling strongly and also with the rumored ps4.5 coming up? All that matters to me is if Sony can provide us with the games we can enjoy playing.

@ixilion: Sony doesn't control games. Thats the game developers. Sony is a hardware manufacturing company that side lines some games. Great games can be on PS4 , Xbox 1, or even grabmonkeyass console.

"PC Gaming is dead, PC gaming is dead!" ... PC gaming is growing and making more money than ever

"Consoles are dead, consoles are dead"....Both consoles explode with amazing sales

"PS4 is selling like Crazy!! Console gaming is alive!!!" ....- Sony "We dont think there will be a PS5."

... I mean really? How does this even happen?!?!?

Either way it's no skin off my nose but i find it hilarious that doom and gloom has come after amazing sales.
