Sony pushes Only On PSN games

PS3-exclusive promotion features Infamous 2: Festival of Blood, PixelJunk Sidescroller; PS2 games also making downloadable debut with God Hand, Odin Sphere, more.

In July, Sony announced that it had invested $20 million into its Pub Fund as part of a three-year deal aimed at bulking up the PlayStation Network game lineup. Now, the Japanese game giant is rolling out a new "Only On PSN" program, highlighting some of the fruits of that investment.

Infamous: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller will cap off the Only On PSN promotion.
Infamous: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller will cap off the Only On PSN promotion.

The Only On PSN promotion will see new games exclusive to the PlayStation Network every week in October. Sony lists the program as launching tomorrow with the release of Rochard and Eufloria. However, Rochard actually debuted on the PlayStation Store last week.

Sony did not announce prices for any games in the series, but it did note that PlayStation Plus subscribers will enjoy a 20 percent discount on all wares during their first week on sale. Further, Sony noted that those who spend $60 or more from their PSN/Sony Entertainment Network wallet in October will be awarded $10 in November.

In addition to the PSN originals, the Only On PSN program will see the debut of downloadable PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 3. The first five games included in the program will be Clover Studio's brawler God Hand, VanillaWare's action strategy GrimGrimoire and action role-playing game Odin Sphere, Konami's tactics game Ring of Red, and Capcom's 3D Ghosts 'n Goblins spin-off Maximo: Ghosts to Glory. Sony did not detail prices for the Only On PSN originals or the PS2 rereleases.

An over-the-top fighting game directed by Shinji Mikami, God Hand was also the last Clover Studios game released.

I don't know why so many people are complaining about the PS2 BC and the fact Sony is re-releasing games on the PSN. If you already own the game then don't buy it again. Nobody is forcing you to. I for one love the fact that they have been doing this. I'm getting to play games I never got a chance to before and I'm getting them at prices that are less than a take out lunch. I'm really happy to see that they are finally adding PS2 games to the system.

The release of Odin Sphere on to PSN has to be the best bit of gaming news I've heard in a while.

@ Cyberxion & Spacerac You both have valid points. So valid, I actually feel bad even posting this, but it has to be said. These PS2 games are a blatant rip off. When the PS3 debuted, it was the ultimate system; Full BC with PS2/PS1 games. In order to increase profits, they slowly started removing PS2 BC, and adding PS2 games to the PSN. While I know that not everybody that owned a PS2, then bought a PS3 owns these (and other) great games, the fact that they're trying to profit from removing features irritates the hell out of me. The only reason I haven't bought a PS3 is the fact that I'd still have to keep my PS2 connected to play games that I love. Other than emulating them (oh please GS, don't flag me for this), that's the only choice I have. Right now, I'm still waiting for a pawnshop or Gamestop to have a BC PS3 ready for purchase, so I can enjoy PS3 games. It may sound petty, but I think it's worth it. I can't stand having a Wii, 360, PS2,Saturn, DC hooked up to the same TV when I could cut it down by one.

@Cyberxion Every point you've made was spot on. I have absolutely no issue with it. My favorite GBA game back in the day was Metroid Zero Mission, and it was a remake of the NES original and my first time really getting to play a Metroid game. I own the God of War Collection and they are 2 stellar games I missed out on when they were on the PS2. Releases give people a chance to play games they missed. @jb9776 Such a shame too. For a recent instance, Sony announced that Chrono Trigger was coming to the PSN and people were begging for that game for forever. And there were people for the PS Vita. I love our various communities but some of the people in them really need to grow up.

@Zidaneski Thank God I can't wait for that. I was looking for that but I couldn't find anything about it. Would it be in 2012 or is it to early for a release date

@steveguttenburg. My question is why would a person rebuy alot of ps2 games on ps3. If you have a large collection of ps2 games chances are you probably have a ps2 and if you don't you should get one. I mean really if a person buys all these games it would cost maybe $60 bucks? A ps2 can be had for $50, $60 bucks. Problem solved, just get a ps2 and you won't have to rebuy any of these games.

@spacerac I agree with your comment, people act as though they have to buy these or they'll die or something. There is so much crying these days, I have owned a ps2 since 2001 and haven't played any of these games and will give these a try if reasonably priced. People today act like if you haven't played these games and want to or if your experiences are different than theirs then your somehow inferior to them. Haters need to give it a rest already.

@TimboII Actually, they phased out the backwards capability because they decided to keep the ps2 in the market along with the ps3. they still sold ps2 consoles and targeted the younger audiences (by packaging it with lego games, etc.)

@ Spacerac The Sony fans moan about Nintendo and Microsoft doing it, Microsoft fans moan about Sony and Nintendo doing it, and Nintendo fans moan about Sony and Microsoft doing it. Nobody on any side of the equation is cool with it unless it happens on their console, and suddenly it becomes an okay thing to do if they even acknowledge that it's happening at all. The problem is, the folks who moan about it seem to think that they're the only people in the entire universe, and that there couldn't possibly be any reason to re-release a game that they've played. Or they think that re-releasing a game keeps developers from working on other games. Or they complain because they haven't got much else with which to make whatever consoles they didn't buy look inferior to the one that they did. Whatever the cause may be for all the whining, I don't think there's much wrong with re-releasing games on any three of the consoles, or the handhelds for that matter. Like you said, if some determines that it aint for them, nobody is holding a gun to their heads and forcing them to buy these things. I know I'll be snagging God Hand myself.

It's a bit misleading to label ported PS2 games as "Only on PSN" but I see what they're getting at. However, it doesn't interest me at all since although my PS3 isn't backwards compatible, my PS2 is still running problem free nearly a decade after I got it. I really don't understand why so many gamers would sell off old consoles to buy newer ones, but to each his own. I've never had any of my consoles break down on me, but it's nice that they're shining a spotlight on some gems that people might have missed when they first released. In particular, I recommend both Vanillaware titles (GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere). Vanillaware is the king of 2D sprites in my book.

@ahpuck They are ports, in the spirit of the PSOne classics in that they're in their original form, no HD remaster, no trophies. I don't know if the Slims have it but PSOne Classics and original PS1/2 discs look great on my tv with the PS3's up-scaling feature.

Great! I've been wanting to play GrimGrimoire for a while and haven't been able to find it anywhere near me. I loved Odin Sphere and recently purchased it again, just to have in my collection since I loved it so much. Can't wait to play GrimGrimoire!

I gotta ask, why do people complain about Sony reselling PS2 games when Nintendo's Wii doesn't allow you to use cartridges, yet you can purchase SNES and N64 games from their Virtual Console store but no one complains "They're making me pay twice for the same game"? Understandable, but what's not understandable at all is that Xbox has "Xbox Originals" which makes you pay for an Xbox 1 game for your 360. So what's the difference with Sony doing it? If you don't like it you don't have to buy it. If you don't like it, you should've sought a B/C PS3 like I did.

Software Emulation for PS2 games is the second most requested feature on PS Blog.Share, and so far it looks like that request has been delivered or some semblance of it. I'm still attached to my 60gb model though. If I'm gonna switch to a Slim and give up my console, the following games made available must be; Entire PS2 4 game Ratchet Collection Entire PS2 4 game Jak and Daxter Collection Entire PS1/2 Ape Escape Collection Klonoa 2 Lunatea's Veil Kya Dark Lineage Parappa the Rapper 2 Psychonauts Viewtiful Joe 1-2 @KingJames304 don't buy Bionic Commando Rearmed 1-2, because those games only work with an internet connection despite being one player games. I'm not sure why this is allowed, but those are the only affected games.

@steveguttenberg One of the reasons to remove from newer models was to reduce cost production, therefore, cheaper models. Nobody wanted to pay $600 for a PS3. That includes me. I only had a 360 at the time, and I wanted a cheaper console and the $300 PS3 Slim came out in great timing.

Ha ha ha, when I read the title of the article I was ready to get all pissed because I thought it was implying that Sony was pushing for PSN games to only be playable as long as you are connected to the internet. Glad to see "Only On PSN" means something else entirely.

Now it's more clear why they removed the backward compatibility. They want to resell you the PS2 games on your shelf.
